Thread: End to tailor vendors?
One of the things I enjoy most about tailor is all the wonderful colors you can make things in. Sure, if you want to carry just black and white items, then maybe 1 or 2 vendors with 150 items each would be fine. One full of black clothes, the other white? How exciting that would be.. not.
I have 48 colors "named" - not thatI stockeverything in all 48of course. But when I sit down to restock my ladies wear vendor with hotpants, bustiers, dress slippers and lekku wraps, I use at least20 of the best colors. Then I'll make an assortment of dresses, skirts and blouses in various colors.Judging by the buying habits of my customers, the extensive color selection is pretty popular. I don't want to sit in my shop each evening for 4 hours doing custom orders. Some people enjoy that, but it's not my thing. I'd rather offer a large selection of nicely coloreditems on my vendors instead.
To be honest, I'm not sure where the tailor profession is headed. On my server there are at least 20-25 clothing vendors on the Nabooworld map. Some tailors have six in one location registered (what's with that?), but there are still a boatload of tailors. My sales have dropped, but I've also stopped advertising. When I do travel around I check to see what other tailors are selling, and most of the vendors are nearly empty. I read on the merchant forum an idea of showing how many items were on a particular vendor on the map display. My, wouldn't that be nice? Save me a lot of running around for sure.
Anyhow, 150 items per vendor is just bad news for tailors.. and for pure merchants as well. With the holo craziness it's nearly impossible to find what you want. Making the whole vendor process more cumbersome can't do anything but make it worse.

The problem is that a lot of us who are Merchants as well may want to be able to use our vendors for other projects. I currently have 3 clothing vendors, my main one, my BE one, and a "sale clothing" vendor.
I use vendors for other things as well though. I run a busy general item shop in our player city that sells equipment to our citizens. I actually use that vendor as a pure merchant business, buying items from our low level crafters and marking them up a little. It doesn't make me nearly as much profit margin as my tailored goods, but I run that shop kind of as a community service. There's a place to find cheap low level equipment in town, and our local lower level crafters have a small market for their goods.
I also run a rare items Museum in our town that is filled with cool loot, quest rewards, and other mostly non-craftable items. I keep a relatively popular vendor in there that sells neat loot, decorative items, and rare skill tapes for those who would rather just spend the credits than use their time tracking it all down on their own.
If we're spending the skill points on Merchant as well as Tailor, we deserve to be able to branch out our interests a little. Forcing a Merchant to use all of our skills just to make one decent Tailor shop is a little ridiculous.
I hope so to Kara but I dont think it works that way, of course your average player is for it he would no longer have to hunt down items in stores he could just use the marketplace for a lot more items. No more traveling to shops I suppose I should be happy I could shut my shop up and just sell of the marketplace myself.
While this would save me money and make better profits I can see the overall effect it would have on the game and its not a good one. Its hard enough at times to get people to visit a vendor shop this would be the death nail.
I just hope someone in Sony reads the crafters messages and not just look blindly at the polls, we have no chance inheck of winning against the mass of players.
It's like being told "Your execution by lethal injection has been scheduled for Febuary 8, 2004. You OK with that?" And then they say "Oh, and we're having a little poll of death row about new prison uniforms. Do you guys prefer orange or black and white stripes?"
LOL.. Pretty much..

How very very dissappointing..
That's the ultimate direction they're headed in, because they either can't or won't make the database support the "player-run economy" game design.

But what about those of us who want to?
While I'm at it -- yes, thisis what bothers me. I like the competition aspect of crafting/selling -- heck, it was the primary thing that drew me to this game in the first place. They've created a viable economy (decay aside) by creating a system in which competition is possible and, in some cases, necessary. At this point, they seem to be making merchant almost a token profession....
Thunderheart's latest post is saying that their "solution" may include limiting vendors to merchants only, and adding the ability to list additional items as you gain more merchant skill boxes.
Technically I could master merchant, chef and tailor. But, I have no combat skills and I have a second account for when I want to shoot stuff. I'm not sure how I feel about making vendors merchant only. I know a lot of "pure merchants" would like that better. It seems like with the possibly 6K cap on the bazaar, most people would just use that as a way to make money and skip having a shop or vendors at all. It is certainly easier to drop 25 items on the bazaar and go about your business.
I think the net effect of these changes will be to increase bazaar usage, and decrease the number of player shops. Is that good or bad? It seems like it would be bad.. but on the other hand so many shops I visit aren't stocked at all, or minimally.
I did enjoy the challenge of growing a business up until this point. But with 20+ tailor vendors registered on the Naboo world map, it's hard to differentiate yourself. I have my core customer base that is very loyal, but that number is shrinking as people leave the game.
I'm not sure what the long-term solution is, but honestly I don't like either of these changes.

I think I'm almost as much annoyed by some of the comments on the big In Development thread as by the proposed change itself. Being lectured by some Master Bounty Hunter who's never picked up a crafting tool or vendor in his life about how I could only ever possibly need 150 items on a vendor, and if I need otherwise I'm obviously just a thieving, hoarding kulak nefariously using a vendor as storage, and need to be purged by the Bolsheviks anyhow....
Because of all of the holidays and lack of time to work on my vendors (plus I really like talking to customers) I have gone almost completely to custom orders lately. The workload has gotten so bad that I have had to raise my prices a lot so now I am a pretty expensive tailor. When this change goes through (and I mean when because so far they have never made a proposal without already making up their mind beforehand) it is going to force a lot of tailors out of business and the rest of us will have to do what I have done (go mostly custom and raise prices to reduce the workload). Then you will see the non-crafter types screaming as they have to pay a lot more and can't get their orders for several days because of the queues!
