Thread: Tailoring a dying profession?

Well there will always be people buying clothes, even if not many, because we get new players all the time. Lots of tailors will quit because we are not getting anything new, but there will always be new tailors, because it's so easy to grind, even if they give up after a few months too, so I don't think the profession will die... There will just be less of us. It's already started anyway.

I don't stock a vendor anymore, I just make custom orders for folks that know me.


But I would think a well stocked tailor vendor in a good location would still do a booming business with the more established and mature players...

Dont get me wrong i've had my good months selling clothes, but last few months its been extreamly slow.


I bet you guys who are selling a lot are selling dirt cheap. Might be why my bussiness is suffering because other local tailors are under cutting my prices...



Well i'll just wait and see what happens after the profession revamp. Hopefully will get some quests to find new schematics for clothing

i just recently (bout a month ago) started master tailor and just bairly got a vendor up today with very little items on it...id have to say though im not getting this mass amount of tells as everyone says...i get like two when i shuttle through theed or coronet, but a lot of times im just making stuff for guild mates...it probably all depends on which server you are on....

well.. ive only been a tailor for a few months, but i have to say.. i dont have a quiet moment!
i rarely get to be online for 15 min without someone wanting to buy clothes..
though i have to agree that it is mainly members of the roleplaying community im in that buy clothes..
but not only.. my shop is located outside mos eisley, which might be another reason for my flowering business..
i also do things to keep my profession fresh and exciting, only 2 weeks ago i organized a fashion show, in character of course, and believe me! it was a hit!

Hmm. This thread sure shows the duality of being a tailor.


For every one that says theydon't get many sales, or don't get tell hell, there's one that says they can't keep up with vendor stocking and turn their title off to hide from tell hell.


We begfor more schematics, but we have so many schematics that stocking vendors with one of everything in only the Crayola 8 is an epic quest. We bemoan the dreadful chore of stocking and relisting our vendors, but we cringe in horror at the impending vendor item limit nerf.


We are bored to tears with making the "make me look cool" aka All Black outfits and red fleshwraps, and customers who say, "I dunno, the pants with the stripe?" But if you can convince a customer to go look at a tailor catalog site, they come back ecstatic and start ordering uncommon clothes and in bright colors! But if you put at least one of everything on your vendor, to use it as a sort of in game catalog, the customers complain you have too much and it's too much work for them to sort through it all. (This applies only to the customers that realize there even IS a Next Items button.)


We get armorsmiths and chefs pestering us for free schematics or below cost crates of components, yet we make a killing in sales if we stock these in bulk.


The list could go on and on. I just find it a bit ironic that what is the bane of one tailor is the boon for another.


I've been a master tailor since Oct. '03. I used to be flat broke all the time. Then I joined a player city and guild. And tell hell and an inbox bursting with custom order mails hit at about the same time. Tell hell and custom mail orders slowed WAY down once I got my vendors up and stocked. Generally around 2000+ items on the main vendor alone. Add to that a Wookiee only vendor, Crates only vendor, and a special vendor just for the Quest Schematic items. And I do not stock BE clothes. I still do plenty of custom orders, for guild, and regular customers, but the majority of my traffic is vendor sales and they don't need to bother me if I'm busy touring the galaxy with friends, or make time out of their day for a custom session because with that many items on the vendors, they usually find what they were looking for, or didn't even know existed, and probably didn't plan to buy. Gotta love those impulse shoppers.


An added plus is our guild and player city have a sterling reputation and a stellar location with high traffic and lots of very dedicated crafter/merchants.


Imake about a million a week.


So I don't think tailoring is a dying profession. I think you just have to find what works for you, your playstyle, your time committments, and what YOU find fun to do. I have fun.

The thing is, compare this discussion to similar discussions we had last fall. Last fall every few days there were threads about "omg, a tailor just moved next door and is undercutting me. what do I do?". "omg, our guild now has 4 tailors and we tear each other to shreds, how can we co-exist?". "Omg, people are selling things for SO cheap, how do these morons make a living?". "Omg, the bazaar is full of master level clothing, how can I as a novice compete?". And this was pre-holo grinding so these were real tailors, not flavors of the week. The most talked about topics by far were the competitive aspects of tailoring. How do I run a successful shop? How do I compete? How do I handle it when all my friends are also tailors and we live in the same region? And so forth and so on.


Where did these threads go? What happend? When was the last time a discussion like this even came up? This is difficult to prove, but I believe what happened is that we now have far far fewer tailors then before, and there is a net exodus from the tailoring profession. It used to be that I had to spend a lot of time analyzing the bazaar and finding what I should list there based on all the other stuff that was on there, and this was when the cap was 3k. Not now. Pretty much whatever I put on there is unique and I can price however I want and it will sell instantly (I never price anything below 4k on the bazaar now). Whenever I get a new customer to my store now the reaction alwaysthe same"wow, an actual vendor that is fully stocked" (even though I consider my stock right now to be poor at 400-450 items).


So to reiterate, I think the fact that some tailors are saying that they are overworked and nobody is bitching about the competitionis not a sign of a healthy profession, but rather a sign of a dying one. Although others are free to draw whatever conclusions they may.

I guess there certainly are advantages to being part of a dying profession. So long as the rate of tailors declines faster than the demand for our products you really should have no problem selling things.

Oh yeah, on that I have to agree, and agree strongly. There are less tailors. Competition for customers, locations and price wars has dropped dramatically. Long-term, well-established tailors have the advantage. When tailors started dropping off the landscape, the ones of us still left sucked up the supply of customers. I have to work a lot less now and get a lot more. Yes, I have fun. Yes my business is doing well. But sadly, partly due to the massive losses amongst the ranks of tailors I used to have to compete against.


My prices are the same as always and are mid-high range for my server. 15k for things like fleshwraps and robes of honor. 400k for crafter's aprons and the toolkits. And no BE clothes. My location makes a huge difference. I stay low-profile (please I don't want to be a "famous/popular tailor") and yet I still get plenty of traffic. I stock plenty of 500-1000 credit items too, and get a good deal of newbie customers. I haven't had the time to try bazaar sales in ages (but I know my chars on other servers have a heck of a time finding a decent variety of clothes to buy on the bazaar).


Where are all the tailors going? And why? Why is it not as competetive as it once was? Why don't we see more threads on "how do I compete" "what sells best" "how do I decorate my shop for best effect?" "how should I set up my vendors/do I need vendors?" "can I be just a travelling tailor and succeed?" Where did those threads go? They died with the resignation we all have been feeling about tailoring being a red-headed stepchild profession.


Where are all the tailors going? Why aren't more tailors coming up the ranks? Those are the questions we need to address.


True; hologrinders ate up a good deal of them, but that only accounts for Jedi-wannabees. What I see are a lot of old-timer tailors quitting and going gunbunny or another crafting profession that presents moreof a challenge and a profit for less actual busy-work. To me, that speaks volumes. If I were a Dev/Designer, that would worry me. They touted this game as having new features and professions never before seen in an MMORPG. Social and crafting professions. So how come being social and a crafter sucks so bad that those players are dropping like flies and going into the same old gunbunny mode? Yo Devs. I'd be getting worried if I were you. The combat afficianados will be there later... but will your crafters and social players still be around waiting when you remember they needed love too?

heh yeah one of the resons i even took up tailor (after swearing to myself never to do a crafting proff) was because no one in my guild was one. and after joining a new and larger guild, they still do not have a tailor. course i like it now and probably wont give it up, but i havnt spent enough time to find how to make money...my vendor currently only holds my "mistakes" that people ordered and decided they didnt want... /sigh maybe one day i will have the patience to stock my vendor

I have to say that it is. I was a Tailor for most of my SWG life, I enjoyed it alot but I also hated it also because of all the 'bad' customers. These customers would consume up to thirty minutes to an hour of my game time to make them an outfit (because they never can decide exactlywhat they want, and me being the nice Tailor, tried to make all my customers happy). In the end of the design session, these customers paid me no more than 50k. This in itself shows that we are not appreciated and is one reason I left the profession to become a Chef (our Domestic Arts Brother Profession).


Every other profession can make crates of items and sell them for high prices, others can make crates of items and extract each item and sell them individually. Tailors really can't create clothes in mass unless they make outfits all one color which isn't a viable option IMO. I think that Tailors need an optionto create Dye Color Kits (Where Clothes can only have their color changed Once) which would enable them to mass produce clothes and still be able to provide unique combinations of colors.


The other reason I left is because of no Experimentation. There is nothing unique about one black muscle shirt created by one tailor than one created by the next. It would have been nice to add experimentation (back in, since it was removed from us) and resource quality requirements that affect the condition of the article of clothing.



Now, not only do I not have to deal with making one article of clothing with 10 different color combinations, I can make a crate of food and sell it without any interaction for 10x+ the price of anything I made as a Tailor...
