It's SO like real life.

I started Tailor as my first holo and when I picked up one of my newer accounts I knew I wanted to go back to it. I make the long walk back to master tailor (ribbed shirt anyone?) and I start setting up my shop and just placed my vendor and set her to broadcast (master merchant as well ) when i get a tell from someone asking if I could make them something. It was somewhat odd because they knew what they wanted and had a color in mind,(not wanting something in black should have tipped my hand ) they then asked how muchwas it? Being she was my first customer I told her if she would be willing to come to my shop I would make them for free, Her reply was "ok, but if you were going to charge, how much would it be?" I did some quick math (well as quick as I can do ) and told her a price. then nothing. She then sends me a FLAMING Tell that peoplelike me were ruining the game and that I wasmaking items at too close to cost and that it wasn't fair. So my reply to her was a quick /ignore and banded her from my shop. I work for a retail company (well use to )it still shocksmeto see now many walk around in this stalk-0f celery stage.

I read this whole thread today. (bored at work) I laughed so hard I drew some rather curious stares from my co-workers. But I think it jinxed me. Conversation I just had:

Smacktard (I LOVE that word: Do you have a character on Server X?

Me: No.

Smacktard: Hmmm.ok well woul dyou make me an outfit? free. I would like to start here on Bria.

Me: I don't typically make free outfits. My prices are reasonable though.

Potential Customer sends tell and we chat about dress shopping for a bit and I refer him to a Master Tailor since he wants a red ball gown and I'm not there yet. Several minutes pass.

Smacktard: so, help me out. totally free new suit and pack for me. I know exactly what I want

Smacktard: when I can I'll repay if you want

Me: As I said, I don't generally make outfits just to give away.

Smacktard: yeah, I know what you said

/confusedexpression on

Smacktard just sits down near me apparently waiting for...I dunno. Not out earning money or training skills (IAM offering clothes in exchange for apprenticeship points. I'm trying to get Master Artisan)

He wasn't rude and he was able to speak non-d00d, but... Why would I just give away outfits? I see trading them for AP to be my choiceas far as acceptable payment options go. My prices are quite reasonable as I am training and trying to build a customer base. Is he expecting free money and armor and weapons and buffs and food too?

sheesh...

but I still enjoy being a tailor. Go figure *shrug*

I usually get these requests, but its strange to have them phrased in a non-1337 way...

Conversation today via /tells:

Noob: Hi, I'm a noob! Would you please make me an outfit that is pretty and makes me look cool...?

Me (wondering why a guy wants to look pretty, but to each their own): No, sorry, I'm off duty.

Noob: Please.!?!

Me: No, sorry, I'm off duty.

Noob: Please please, I'm just a poor noob!

Me: No, sorry, I'm off duty.

Noob: Please, please, I'll pay you double!!!

Me, (thinking yeah, that makes a lot of sense): No, sorry, I'm off duty.

Noob: Thank you.

Me (thinking, what is he thanking me for?): Silence

Hello All,

New Master Tailor on Sunrunner. I love the stories like these, so I hope my own little tidbit causes laughs. My own story came from my days of grinding out Tailor. I was sitting in a Coronet buff-line,non-Master Swordsman, when my new Smacktard friend sends me a tell while standing literally on top of me. My faut for wearing my Expert Tailor title, I guess. Don't know what it is, but Trandoshans and the title Novice Medic don't mix well in my brains.I don't remember the conversation verbatium, but heres the basicgist of it:

Smacky: Hi

Me: Yes, how can I help you?

Smacky: I want a schoolbag

Me: Pardon, but you do mean a Pack of some kind right?

Smacky: I need a schoolbag to hold my medicines

Now I don't reply to him yet, I figured I'd be kind and make the pack.

Smacky: Well

Smacky: ???

Me: Delay was because I made the pack you requested. I don't want anything for it, just trade me so I can give it to you.

*I Trade him the Travel Pack, named Schoolbag*

Smacky: SWEET Ok, now I want some uber-doc clothings.

Me: Ok, but I am not a Master Tailor yet, so there are many things I cannot make yet.

Smacky: I don't care what kind of clothes I just want clothes with +25s to my doc skills

Me: I am sorry, but I do not have the BE componets to give that ability to clothing.

Smacky: Ur a Tailor you make clothes you give the abilities

Me: Yes I can do that, but I do require components for the clothing to give it abilities, componets that I can only get from a BE.

Smacky: BE?

*At this point, I feel the urge to my head by the hair and slam it into my desk mulitple times*

Me: a Bio-Engineer, a player class

Smacky: Whats a Bio-Engineer?

I have a couple highly annoying customers that I deal with simply because they tip me rather well. lol More often than not when someone sends me a tell for something I ask them if they have looked on my vendor first. I run a guild so alot of times I'm too busy to do orders for people that have no clue what they want. I try to have patience with people because I know not everyone is a rocket scientist. But the one thing I hate the most is when someone ORDERS me to do something. I've had several people TELL me to make themthis or thatwhile II'm about to board a ship to another planet. I just tell them, Please visit my mall as I am very busy right now. If you dont' see what you like then feel free to send me an email.

One day a guy caught me in an unusually bad mood and I started to lecture him on the finer points of having manners when he says something like "Your the one who needs customer." I just told him that I don't need them that bad! And I put him on ignore.

When order things from people in professions I have little knowledge about, I tell them to please take their time and ask them if there is anything I can do FOR THEM. You usually get treated much better when you are nice. Most of the time if people have been exceedingly gracious I make them things for FREE. I make money in other ways so its not that big of a deal to give away a pair of pants or a top. Those people will remember you and keep coming back and refer their friends to you.

I've been meaning to add this for a while... just kept forgetting about it... I think someone's already had this happen...

So, I'm out hunting Krayts with some people. My shop had only been open for about a month, so I got excited when I recieved a few emails saying that this chick had purchased some clothes. Yay! A few minutes later, I get another email from the girl. She tells me that she loves my shop and that I have a great selection. She says that she loves the clothes she just bought; her husband, however, wasn't very fond of a few things... so do I have some sort of return policy? Like I said, I hadn't been open very long and was in a good mood, so I was like, "Sure!Just offer the items back to the vendor for the same price you paid." She said, "Great!A good return policy is a must-have for dancers!" (or something like that). I was under the impression that this would be a one-time thing.

First of all, she didn't return the items for another day or two. I didn't think anything of it; it had been pretty late when we exchanged emails. I thought maybe she just hadn't gotten back online or something. She finally offered the stuff and then purchased some more items. I didn't hear from her for about a week; business started picking up, and I started paying less attention to who was buying my clothing. I had almost forgotten about her until... I check my "Offers" screen. I was supposed to be picking up something my RL fiancee was dropping off on my vendor. Right under his stuff was like, 5 items offered back to my vendor from that girl! I didn't really know what to do; I had told her about my "return policy" ... so I just let it go and bought back the clothes. I figured if it's only her that does it, that's ok. I figured she wouldn't be returning everything, right? Wrong.

She came into my shop two or three times after that, bought outfits and then returning them two or three days later. She even returned two Tech Packs! I mean, was she shopping for her friends, too? ("I found this Tailor, she's so gullible!") Finally, I'd had enough. I was binge crafting one evening in the back room of my store, and she walked in. In spatial, I saw my vendors say her name. I knew what was coming, so I stopped crafting, and waited. Sure enough "SO & SO has offered an item to your vendor" came up. I sent her a tell and told her that she just can't come in and return everything she buys. It just doesn't look good. She said "ok, no problem" and left. She hasn't come back into that shop since.

I did have one last encounter with the cheapskate dancer. My shop had two locations: one outside of Coronet and one outside of Bestine. She always came into my Coronet shop; I don't think she knew about the one in Bestine. I finally talked my fiancee into letting me get an alt, and Itransferred all of my crafting, and my shops,to her. Thus, my tailor shop underwent a little remodeling. The name was changed form "Marah's Master Tailor Shop" to "Zen and the Art of Fashion." The chick came in there once, right after the remodeling was done, and bought some pants. She didn't buy anything else. My theory is, she saw that some items were crafted by "Marah" and knew she wouldn't be able to pull a fast one on this tailor.

I bet she does the same thing in real life... buys clothes and then wears them out with the tags on and then takes them back thre days later. /shakes head
