Thread: SWORDSMEN'S POLL: Dual-wielding

you guys really are failing to realize what profession you are. you are heavy swordsman, you use both your hands on one heavy sword to do major damage. just because you use 2 hands, does not entitle you to use 2 swords. fencers on the other hand supposedly use light weaponry in one hand so that they can free the other hand up to help them fight, by use of a shield, or more commonly, as history tells us, a smaller sword or dagger. heavy swordsman will never be able to use dual wield, its as simple as that. you can vote yes all you want, butin the end swordsman will never get dual wield. i would bet money on it.

Multiple points:

1.) No, we are not failing to realize anything; we simply disagree with one interpretation of the class.

2.) What "history" are you talking about? I've given you (and everyone else) a very concrete example of an instance in Japanese history that specifically supports the idea of a dual-wielding Swordsman (not fencer).

3.) I would, however, agree with you that we will be quite unlikely to get dual-wield. I can't see the devs implementing it in the game, although if they did, I would prefer to see both of us getting it - the Swordsman (but only with katanas) and the Fencers (with whatever swords they have).

ok, i had it all written out before but it got deleted

i myself am a master swordsman, and as such i am not in favor of dual wield for our class.

Historically we are not a "dual-wield" class, if you look back to the samurai which so often this class is

compared to, they traditionally used a long curved 2handed blade (the katana). And if anything they used a

wakizashi as a secondary "fail-safe" weapon. So i support the idea of adding a wakizashi style blade to the

game i do not support dual wield for swordsman. on the other hand i do support the notion for fencers.

if you look back you will see that in contrast to the samurai the Ninja oft used dual shorter straight bladed

swords similar to the katana, or they used dual wakizashi. and they had lighter armor and depended on

stealth and speed (both of which are the only saving graces of fencer right now).

So in short fencer=ninja swordsman=samurai fencer=dual wielders swordsman=single 2hand blade wielder

(with option of secondary wakizashi). and as result of history i have to place my vote for no to dual wield on

swordsman and yes on fencer.

No: Fencers should get dual wield, Swordsman should get massive chainswords that ripsaurs rancors into tribles.

My friend Karballo. I see where you're coming from and while I am not as versed in Japanese history as I am in Egyptian history, I know a small bit of what you speak. I cannot argue with your logic in this situation. Logically, I'd agree that you are correct. I admit, however, that I"m thinking more as a Fencer than as a Swordsman. If they give Heavy Swordsman the ability to dual-wield, they may as well consolidate Fencers and Heavy Swordsman into one melee combat profession. That's all I'm thinking about in this situation.

Please forgive me, I've just worked a double and I'm tired...hehe. But I'm thinking strictly to protect what little the Fencer already has. Fencers are the masters of the one-handed weapon. Heavy Swordsmen are supposed to be the masters of the Two-handed weapons (Polearms aside). I fail to see how, in terms of game balance, you can let a class that is accustomed to using big, damaging weapons in two hands, the ability to use two, smaller one-handed weapons...one in each hand. That's a direct kick in the teeth to the Fencer profession, which has suffered greatly since day one.

Please do not misconstrue what I'm saying here. I will admit that from a histroical standpoint, your knowledge greatly outweighs mine in this matter and that according to a friend of mine who is well-versed in Japanese history, you are correct (I never doubted your knowledge...hehe). But in terms of game balance (what's that???...I know), the best thing to do to make us both happy and solve a lot of problems would be to consolidate the Fencer and the Heavy Swordsman into one melee profession. They would just be called Swordsmen and you would have the ability to use any one or two handed sword you desire. If you opt to use 2 swords, you can dual wield or you can go two-handed for big damage.

Because as it stands now, if they do give Swordsmen the ability to dual wield...there will be absolutely no point in being a Fencer...at all...none! That's all I'm thinking about in this situation. No more, no less.

Having said that...I love my Novice Heavy Swordsman...hehe.

I have no doubt in that opinion, ninelives. However, I try to look at things from all perspectives, not just the class in question. All I'm saying is that if dual-wielding were implemented for the Heavy Swordsmen, surely you cannot argue that it would be a direct slap in the face for Fencers who among other things, have defensive modifiers that aren't working, do less damage than any other direct combat class in the game and who have poop for weapon choices.

Like I said before, I am inclined towards melee over ranged combatants anyway. I want fixes and improvements for all of us who prefer to get up close and personal. But this "fix," if put in, would totally destroy the Fencer profession.

Oh, and besides, if they ever fix counterattacking...Heavy Swordsmen won't need dual-wielding, correct?

No

i think duel wielding would be awsome and i would be extremely happy if it was given to swordsman but i dont think it suits us.. i agree that katanas are light enough to let one carry a second weapon, but we are supposed to have the 2 handed swords, The big greatswords and longswords(there are none in the game). We should be given bigger swords, swords with heavy armor piercing just because of the power of them. Fencer would probably be better suited to duel wielding, but still, i would say it would be best to make a new skill line: perhaps the berserker or some such, who uses one or 2 swords, has defense penalties, and packs dmg.

im not very historicaly aware (or very good at writing) buti dont see how we could hold two 2-handed weapons... that would take enormous strengths.

Or... give duel wield to wookiees and/or trandos because of thier size. (i am a wookiee so you know where this comes from)

For the Japanese referances, concider that it is called a "2 hand" curved sword. It requires 2h hands to wield, not optional, required. This is not a Katana, it is a Naginata.

Not even remotely close. Have you ever seen a naginata? Those things are **edit** huge, and shaped entirely different, anyways. There is no real similarity between the two, aside from some cheesy D&D references, perhaps.

Do a Google search and look at a picture. A naginata is NOT a two-handed sword, but closer to the European pike.

This is one of those occassions where my many years of D&Ding and playing too many video games comes in handy. I always thought of a Naginata as a polearm with a huge, curved blade on the end. How many of you have played or are playing Soul Caliber in any of its incarnations? Seung Mina uses a Naginata. Mitsirugi uses a Katana. From my interpretation a katana can be used in either one or two hands, depending on the preference of the wielder. If used in a two weapon set, the smaller blade used in the off-hand is usually a wakizashi. A bigger version of the katana is the nodaichi (sp?) and it's always used in 2-hands because it's too big to be used in one.
