I have to go with Miyamoto Musashi, creator of Ni Ten Ichi Ryu (Two Sword Technique). I mean the guy could beat Samurai using alive blade with bokken (wooden sword used for practice). ...anybody who can do that has my vote for best Swordsman.

I CAN OWN ALL YOU SAMURI SHOWDOWN PLAYERS! ...its all about Ukiyo... and i know ALL the cheapest, most unfair moves I guess thats why he got "nerfed" later in the series. Hanzo is fun to use to... Gotta love the super flying explosive pile-driver!!!!!!!!!!!

If you can swing a sword efficiently with both hands on it (usually meaning the
handle has enough room for both hands)... ITS A FRICKIN TWO HANDED SWORD ( or hand and a half. Whatever, if you wanna get overly technical). The rest is a matter of preference and situation.

If your woried about how to swing your sword in a fight because of the particulars about the handle... your going to die.

if your gonna post dont nag about the swords and NOT post your favorite swordsman... Nag and post your favorite swordsman...sheesh... some people i swear

Posting about hanzo just reminded me of another good swordsman:
RYU HYABUSA from the ninja gaiden series on O.G. nintendo(and DOA)

since hes a ninja he like totally flips out and kills people ALL the time. He like can kill whole towns if he gets really pissed off. Dont mess with the power of ninjas... its the ultimate power ever.

Kenshin Himura, and the seven samurai have been mentioned already. But you all seem to have forgoten about Mitsurugi from capcoms soul calibur series.

I do think kenshin is supperior in technique, hence the reason I named my character after him. I am not an expert on japanese culture and I do not know the japanese language, although i am interested in learning. Is there any connection between Kenshin's Hiten Mitsurugi style and Mitsurugi's character? Or is it simply an insperation for Mitsurugi's character.

Mitsurugi I think deserves to be called the best example of a master swordsman because although Kenshin is a superior duelist, Mitsurugi developed his own style and specifically enginered it to combat ranged weapon users. Which as I recall is what we're trying to do the majoirty of the time.

Kenshin Himura is the main character of an anime called Rurouni Kenshin (or Samurai X in the U.S).

Actually.. I didn't realise until now, but Sanosuke from Rorouni Kenshin is a true Heavy Swordsman. I think his blade is probably bigger than Clouds buster sword.

Sanoskes sword is called a Zan-batoh (im not sure of the spelling) AKA "horse cutter" Its a huge sword that was DROPPED on a foe rather than swung (cuz the sheer size and weight) It was mainly used as a calvalry buster in large battles rather than a dueling implement...

I dont know why i know this but i do...

Sanoske is definatley a good example of a heavy swordsman... and hes got the character for "BAD" on the back of his shirt...hes cool.

Actually Rurouni Kenshin is the name of the anime series. Samurai X is the name of the 3 ovas that were released after the shows final season.

Rurouni Kenshin followed the story of Himura Kenshin, a former retainer and assasin who fought durring the meiji revolution. The sword art he practiced was called Hiten Mitsurigi, the fabled invincible sword style. He's skill and ruthlessness were so great that he earned the name Hitokiri Battousai (Sword Bearing Master Assasin). The series starts at the begining of the meiji era and kenshin, in retribution for his sins, takes a vow to never kill again. He wields a reverse blade sword that has a blunted edge where the blade should be so that it cannot kill anyone with normal sword techniques, and develops a new childish personality to replace his old cold emotionless one. Unfortunatly his past keeps coming back to haunt him both in his mind, and through enemies that have heard of his skill. There's much more but that's the basic outline of the series.

Samurai X: trust and betrayel follows the events of the tokugawa era in which kenshin was an imperialist who slayed countless men. It basically serves as a prolouge to the series and shows the events that lead's to kenshin's decision to become a wanderer. Samurai X: reflections is an epilouge to the series that "reflects" on the series, as well as concludes it. The ending is absolutley brillant so I wont spoil it.

Rurouni Kenshin is a little more abstract in it's style, so combat is fairly unrealistic. Kenshin blurs faster than the eye can see and there are swords that can light on fire. Everything has a certain realistic explanation to it, andthe sword fights use actual swordtechniques that have just been augmented toan extreme level, but it's still pretty unbelieveable. Samurai X however has a far more realistic style to it. The only unrealistic aspect to it is kenshin. He doesn't move faster than a speeding bullet but he's far to fast and precise in his execution of the katasto be a real human being.

Both are incredible examples of animation and I would recomend them to everyone. The most interesting thing in either of them is their roots in actual historical events. Kenshin is fictional, but he is based on samurai who were placed in a similar situation like him. Real historical individuals make appearances on the show and over all the show remains very true to the actual history.

When making my character I felt that since there's a rebellion going on, and there's a swordsman class it would be appropriate.

Sorry for my long post but I felt an urge to give a brief overview of this classic anime for all those who haven't seen it.

Gatsu from beserk is my ideal swordsmen.

Heh heh....now HE was a Heavy Swordsman.......Guts.....
Most of theswordsman peoplenamed above, the Japanese ones anyway, used a 1-handed sword....not a 2-handed.....alot of people don't know the difference on this boards lol............If you can wield thesword with 1 hand AND 2 hands, it's a 1-handed sword. If you can't wield it with 1 hand (because of weight and especially size)and only 2 hands, it's a 2 handed sword.........
1samurai in the Seven Samurai used a REAL 2-handed sword.

Oh man seven samurai is an awesome movie. The drunk beserk like samurai had the two handed sword. I don't even know how to spell Gatsu's name, it is either Gatts, Guts, Gatsu. Stupid subtitled version goes between Gatsu, and Gatts.

Oh and Gabe. The TV series? Come on the movie had Sean Connery, the series just had bad acting. At least the highlander had a cool pony tail in the series...

My grandfather is my model for a master swordsman. I would sometimes get to watch him practice when I was younger, and it fascinated me. His complete focus and concentration was very astounding to an eight year old. He is what got me interested in swords in the first place.

P.S. This is a little off topic, but who is Himura Kenshin (or Keshin Himura)? I keep getting asked by people if I know this person.
