What about Liono (sp?) from Thundercats! That sword was insane. He could look through the hilt to where there was trouble and then the blade would grow to full size.

Or Stormshadow from G.I. Joe? By far my favorite character. He was a nasty ninja and he always kinda had his own agenda. He had that personal war against Snake-Eyes (who was another nice ninja).

Or the chinese warrior Lu Bu from the Three Kingdoms novel (also one of the best characters in the Dynasty Warriors video games). He was unequaled in combat and wielded a freakin huge halberdand took people out by the dozens.

Uma Thurmans character in Kill Bill was real nice with the samurai sword. The huge fight scene near the end where she pretty much took limbs off of like 50 people.

Also the girl in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. She was insanely good. Maybe not quite a heavy swordsman (more speed and technique), but definitely worth mentioning. But a lot of characters in that movie with some cool swordsman skills.

Sephiroth and Auron both are very good examples. As well as He-Man, whomever brought that up... haha. That guy was jacked.

Any of the Knights of the Roundtable characters would be excellent examples. Lancelot, King Arthur etc. All of those Medieval types who would wear their massive plate armor and wield broadswords. The Fencers were more of the "Three Muskateer" types and wouldn't stand a chance against a Heavy Swordsman Let them go woo the lady and be flashy, we'll go make history hehe.

So needless to say, the Swordsman is as unique in their style as they are in their personality. I myself take bits and pieces from many of these examples to create a character of my own.
