I pretty much consider myself a master SL anyway since the proff really doesnt work anyway =p
anyone with novice SL can pretty much consider themselves MSL, isnt that pathetic?
Also by choice.
What good is a group with no leader. I've been in plenty of parties that have gone out, only to see 2/3's of them clone back. I'm a newbie sl that prides himself on over 90% successful return rates with little to no causualties. A good group that hunts and lives together is much more profitable and enjoyable then one where there is no organization and the leader has their head up their arse...
Those that die generally do so because of their own sheer stupidity NOT because of my group. That is why I picked squad leader...not some stupid holocron...
bacame a squad leader today, went out with a group, filled two boxes worth of xp in an hour or so. Still, it was my choice, although I may persue somthing like ranger and just let sqad leader sit there. My weapon of choice is pistol (pistoleer is a good prof, and I plan to master it). Ya know, being a sqad leader is like being an officer, who uses (say it with me now) a pistol!
As a side note, I've noticed that all squad leaders are clearly pro choice (no magic 8 ball's gonna tell ME what I can't do; its my right to choose!), and quite oviously pro environment (save the whales, trees, squad leaders, etc.). Interesting, aint it?
I've been a Squad Leader since week 3 or so, I'd go up about one skill line per month, taking my time and dabbling in many other professions. I've finally settled on Doctor with Reviving and high level Buffing skills as my secondary profession (with literally the bare minimum of weapon skills) and am now finally working towards Mastering Squad Leader, which I plan to keep for a long time.
The fun, for me, comes from keeping groups alive longer against longer odds than any of us could challenge alone. Battles, in swg, are only fun to meif victory is in doubt until the final moments.

I'm here by choice as well (almost). I should hit novice tonight after I finish camping. But, I am a masochist in search of pain. I became a DE after it got hosed and gave it up. I almost mastered BE before giving it up shortly after a major fix (compared to previous) came in. I was well on the way to commando several times and kept quiting shortly after a 'fix'. So, I am in search of new pain.
Also, our PA's SL is out of game for a while and we need one. I'm hoping it works well with Smuggler. I plan to keep an eye on the big picture of the battle and throw in my combat skills wherever possible. But, I just don't compare to the other combat heavy folks, and, frankly, don't want to. Every large group needs someone to watch the big picture and let folks know who's in trouble and what to do next. If a group is finding things too easy, they are either really well led or not fighting anything near their skill level (or both).
I refuse to play the Holo Hunt. The whole fiasco has severely jaded my view of this otherwise awesome game. The requirement that only (or predominantly) mindless grinders in search of Power will become Jedi is counter to what it should be. It would have been better if there were no way for a player to become a Jedi. If they don't come up with a way to make reaching Jedi fun, there will be many who leave because the choice will be to either become a mindlessgrinding machine, or not be allowed the chance for the ultimate content: Jedi. (sorry for the rant, but it's something I feel very strongly about. I stopped playing for about a week after the Holo Fiasco of '03 started)
So, even if SL is broken, I plan to give it a try. If it's useful to our group, I'll stick with it. If not, I'll move on. Afterall, whether he bears the title of Squad Leader or not, a leader's primary focus is the group, not himself.
Smuggler + SL = Deadly combo in PvP. Panic shot (delay target for 10 seconds) + volly fire (everybody in the groups next attack fires at the Squad Leader target) = instant death. Nice. Very very nice.

I am SL by choice as well. I really enjoy the proff. I find it most fullfilling. I have been a master SL for almost 2 months now and have no plans on dropping it.

And I remember how impressed I was when, after being only 2 or 3 days in the game, I saw a Master-SL when I was in a hospital in Coronet: The only one I have seen since then on Tarquinas

This is, like I said, an alt who will likely advance very slowly. I understand that SL is the most broken class in the game right now, but it's always been my observation that the broken classes eventually become overpowered (temporarily) once they are fixed.
I said it about Commando's when they were at their worst point, and I'm saying it about Squad Leaders now. By time I become even a moderately advanced SL with this character, I predict the class will be greatly overpowered. Cries of nerfage will come from other support classes.

Which comes to my point. How many of you out there are in the Squad Leader profession voluntarily, like myself? I have nothing against people who want their Jedi, but I believe that the way the devs have come up with creating your FS slot defeats the purpose of the game.
AAHhhh but there in lies the fault of your point. It DOES NOT defeat the purpose of the game. The purpose of the game is ULTIMATELY to make SOE money. What better way than to make the silly people who pay $15 to play a month to master every single job there is in order to get a FS.
Let me put it this way. people were getting a bit frustrated, nothing to do, no story line, most everything is bugged and once you've mastered the field you wanted most your left bored. Combine this with the frustration of not knowing how in the hell to get the FS and people start leaving. So, what does one do? Toss a bone. The holocron is the bone designed to keep us dogs nipping. As you can see its working. God knows how many people are now busting thier chops to get mastered at what ever the holocron says only to find they will have to master another, then another... eventually (in my opinion) to have mastered ALL. This is a guarantee that there will be players for months if not years and therefore money flowing into SOE's pockets.
BUT I can not complain since I will be sticking around for a while longer because of other bones being tossed my way. I am one of those volunteer Squad Leaders and not a draftiee. SO far I have had fun with it, RPing it.
Another thing the holocrons do is force people to explore that content they say is soo lacking. I find it very hard to believe all those people screaming for content have really ever went along trying and MASTERING all the professions available to them. I'm on my second character now, with my first one fully mastered and not going any higher... so now onto a new experience. And even after this one... still many other professions to do ![]()
