OK, this is how I see it, Smugglers are NOT theives, so stealing is out. (not that smugglers would not resort to stealing if it was required in the course of their greater mission) As to PvP, well why should a person choose not to have to deal with potentially harder foes (ie: Real Player characters) and still reap the choicer rewards. If that is the mind set, then why cant i loot a krayt skull after defeating a nest of those little bunny things on Rori and be paid like 30000 creds for doing it? I agree there should be a choice in whether a player wants to play PvP or not, but being realistic, if I choose not to risk having my asp kicked by uber player BH, then why should I receive the uber rewards for being a chicken hearted player? (not calling anyone names, as I personally stay away from PvP for those reasons) I also think we should have special missions for certain underworld NPC's that would require smugglers to actually smuggle materials to certain locations. Maybe we could smuggle something like drugs, guns, stolen art? Even bones. Who wouldnt want to be a bone smuggler?

Wouldn't that mean you would be a thief at that point? Smuggler are not theives but might steal...I sense a paradox here.

That being said, I've thought a little more about it. You're right, its not really a desired part of this so called revamp. Its completely unneccessary. While I do think it was an interesting idea, I'm gonna have to say no on it too.

As always, the "smuggler" should smuggle. We all keep saying that. When are they gonna listen?

I think the point of that ambiguous statement was we're smugglers, not thieves. But as scoundrels we're not personally above stealing, it just is not a mechanic that belongs in our tree.

what he said. If I wanted to be a theif, I would have played EQ or some other game that has thieves in it. Smugglers also are not killers by nature, which is not to say we wouldnt kill whoever gets in our way of making a buck. Remember that guy from the first movie, whats his name, the guy that kills the Rodian in the cantina? He wasnt above stealing what he needed, nor killing who he needed.

Agreed:

We are NOT thieves. We are smugglers--a damned sight above thieves. Thieves are those lowlife hoods we see in the cities (tagged as criminals). Every thief WISHES he/she could be a smuggler. In the hierarchy of the underworld, high to low, we have Hutts, Smugglers, Assassins, Slicers (yes, I know, but slicers don't necessarily smuggle anything), Thugs, then Thieves. Thieves are the bottom of the food chain, while WE are #2 (we DO answer to the Hutts, but we are their money-makers).

They have no intention of listening, but we do have a good time discussing it.

This is no slight meant to you guys. I'm enjoying the conversation. so I'll talk about it until you all feel you want to move on. I do like talking about it with you.

I have a question: How many times do you have to steal before you are a thief? How many times do you kill before you're a killer.

The argument that Han wasn't above stealing or killing just means that he was a theif and killer at times too. Again, no slight meant; because he was my favorite SW character. But we would all have to agree that he started out the trilogy as a different person then who he was by the time ROTJ came around. He found out he could be better.

Still you are right in that the theif line is not what we need for the smuggler tree. Merchant is not something I want to invest my smuggler in. (oops, no pun meant there)

this is really a great thread! I've enjoyed reading it so much. The fact that som many players care enough about the game gives me hope that the revamp will ALLOW US TO FRIGGIN SMUGGLE!!!!!!!!

No slight taken.

However, anyone can steal, anyone can kill--stuffhappens. When you become a thief or killer is when you repeat the behavior. If someone kills once, it can happen...if they do so a second time they're dangerous and need to be kept away from society. Same goes for Stealing--anyone can "acquire" an item not theirs in a situation--it can happen--but if they do so a second time they see it as an acceptable pattern of behavior, cannot be trusted, and need to be dealt with accordingly.

BY THE WAY: At what point did Han EVER steal anything? He conducted himself asabusinessman, albeit a very rigid one in the underworld, but never stole anything--his own sense ofright and wrongis what caused him to leave the Empire in the first place (YES, he was an Imperial officer at one time)--and yes he killed, but when others were trying to kill him. Don't confuse self-defensewith being akiller--it doesn't make you a killer if killing is the only way to survive.

Agreed:

We would find ourselves in very tight situations, as smugglers tend to do, but we would have other skills to help get those missions done. Smugglers are not primarily about shoot your way in and your way out, like frontline hitters--we fight if we have to, but tend to rely more on finesse andobscurity and are content to escape the situation with our hides intact.

Nice ideas, Ezis:

Would such actions as, say, killing the scanning party result in something along the lines of an arrest warrant being issued???

ok, great idea in the arrest warrant. Next thing, sorry i misspelled thief, i do that some times. Also, are the movies based on the books? I didn't read all the books on star wars, but I was told Han Solo and Chewbacca were considered as common criminals for their previous actions, and their history left murky. When i drove a taxi at night, i was introduced to a less savory segment of our population, but the majority of whom have a greater feeling of honor, and dignity than the "regular" folks you would meet during the day time. Being a thief means if you see something you want or might make you some creds, you take it. A smuggler on the other hand would really only steal an item they needed. (If they couldn't barter for it before hand) I mean, smugglers dont really look at the WRITTEN law the same as regular folks do. I mean after all, isnt the rebellion against the law? And its not like a smuggler is gonna turn himself in for killing in self defense. And also, to some folks, steal once, you are a thief, kill once you are a killer, sell spice once, you are a pusher. I mean doesnt it take a different attitudetowards the rules to be a smuggler?

My suggestion for the revamp would be to have the authorities conduct full body cavity searches. That would be fun.

BTW: If your taking me too seriously, stand back take a look around, and remember, this is a GAME we're talking about.

yes, as to poor greenmarine, who knows, he might be deployed, then again, we are not in charge of the Dev team at SOE and our wants and desires are not what the great management team at Sony have in mind as the most important items to work on. He might just have been reassigned for the time being. Anyways, with the fantasy base of the roleplaying genre, you must put yourself in the mental frame of mind of what your supposed to be playing. And just what is a cop doing being a smuggler?
