Some comments:
"You could possibly be ambushed by thugs from that supplier."
This is the way it should be -- because it's the real way the underworld works! It should be anywhere, and the thugs should know when a player is vulnerable (i.e. not grouped, or in a small group).

"Some players feel that dying isn't enough of a punishment."
I agree -- bring back death runs and the original purpose of insurance.

"Some players feel that storm troopers are too weak."
The opponent that tracks you down ("ambushed") should be proportional to your skill and the difficulty of the mission.

"Players don't like that only storm troopers scan."
All police forces should scan. Thug factions should scan you to determine if they want to rob you or not. That would be an interesting dialog -- "Give us this stuff or we'll kill you..."

"This brings up the possibility of a group of players using a low level smuggler to spawn lower level faction targets. The solution to stopping faction farming of scan spawned NPCs is to prevent them from giving GCW faction."
Solution: faction points are only given when you kill an opponent that is actively hunting you ("ambush"), when kill someone in PvP, when you kill opponents as part of a (non-recurring spawn) faction mission, and so forth... No more killing a few random rebels out in the wild to get a notch in your belt.

"... smugglers are worried that increased punishments for using illegal items, like spices and sliced gear, will cause a depression in their markets."
Yes -- but two things will change this. First, the price will go up for those who want it. Second, I would imagine that the reward for using such items would go up by making the illegal item more valuable. For example, highly-illegal spices should be much more desirable than legal chef foods from a buff standpoint to counteract the risk of carrying them.

for the scanning portion, you should be able to avoid detection with underworld tree

Smuggling is a hybrid of street business and descent fighting skills - so let us make money!! and let us be a force in combat !!
I know its been written about ad nauseum but here are a few ways to revamp without a silly amount of work.
Smuggling: Make smuggling terminals. Everyone is right player BH's are the only way for me to be scared. Any aborted mission or loss of cargo(w/JTL) constitutes our name kicked over to BH terminals. Let us create a scan-avoidance container (where percentage levels are based on materials used, experimentation, and smuggler experience. This way players purchase these to move their unmentionables into this b4 ENTERING a starport. Make it look like an airport here with security lines. If the players decide not to use one then they risk having it impounded. This way we alleviate trying to create a system of supertroopers to stop uberplayers. Plus all you would have to do create a few new terminals. And make the contraband expensive to get out - ive seen some bank accounts these fines are absolutly silly.
Spice: Let the chefs make foods and us frankenstien them and sell them. That way all their low level foods become worthy of purchase. Nothing worse than crafting cookies with no forseeable buyer. Also look at the way the economy is helped out. Let them be a little more comparable with doc's buffs.
Fighting: add a few bonus shots for being pistoleer and smuggler. Also give us a fair shot in PvP but dont go overboard so you'll have to revamp 3 other professions.
Slicing: dont allow nonmechanical items to be sliced- how do you increase the damage on a sword- its impossible!!! BUt keep the randomness of the % intact - once again think of the game economy - if someone doesnt like the % theylll buy a new weapon to have it done again. HOWEVER let us choose what to slice you mean to tell me i can use a clamp but dont know whether or not im tinkering with the trigger or power output regulator?

GreenMarine, I think that sounds fantastic. I'm already working on my 70k unarmed XP to get
to the Unarmed 4 skill box for Novice Smuggler. It was a last minute change to my skill tree
set, but I think it will be so worth it now!
On a lighter note: Ternque01, it wasn't Al Gore that said the quote in your sig. It was
Vice President Dan Quayle. Al Gore was the one who "Invented the Internet". =)

Maybe the person should be given an option of paying a large fine or fighting there way out it instead of losing the contrabaned item

Well, only on about page five of this thing so forgive me if my comments are too redundant, but I'd like to weigh in.
First of all, I am very much in favor of anything that would make smugglers feel like criminals instead of merchants with a limited product.
Secondly I would like to say I do not participate in a lot of PvP. Just not my cuppa tea, yanno?
But as much as I don't like PvP, I like the sound of the two mission style that is proposed. I could choose to risk PvP, or I could choose not to. Making it my choice seems like the only way to make everyone happy. I cannot see why someone who likes PvP would be upset over others choosing to not engage. You want your PvP, you can have your PvP.
I would like to know more about how the Bounty Hunter mission thing works. If one guy whacks me, but three have picked up the mission, I sure hope that cancels the others from having the mission.
Someone suggested an option to pay off the Bounty Hunter on your tail. I like this alot. Han and Greedo talking is a perfect example from our source material that such things occured. And perhaps the option to pay off the mission entierly? Not certain how that would work, but maybe paying Jabba ten times the amount you were supposed to be paid for the mission might get him to call off the dogs.
Scanning from groups other than the Imps is an idea I am in favor of. My faction standing with the Rebels should give me immunity with them, from a monetary fine at least. But maybe a faction hit when their opinion of me is lowered as they discover I'm an untrustworthy smuggler or drug user. So being caught with contraband gives you a faction fine from groups you are a declared member of and a monetary fine from others.
Someone also suggested that fines be paid at a desk in town instead of being taken from you on the spot. You can choose to skip on the fine and risk getting a Tef to Bounty Hunters or go in and pay your fine. I like this very much. Gives non-smugglers and non-jedi a chance to turn up as a bounty, but again it becomes their choice to do so. Good thought, worth exploring in my opinion.
Choosing which way we slice: I'm for it. Mebbie not at the novice levels, but in the very least tag an item that we could previously slice become choosable when we reach the level of slicing above where we started slicing it. Or maybe some sort of trade off on effect for choosing. Random slice gives a better slice by three to five percent, but choosing makes it certain you get what you want.

ACK!!
Tabbed when I should'a carriage returned. I could edit my post, but I figure with the new update going live today lots of folks are reading and so someone is seeing the missent post and whatnot...
....anyways, to continue...
Do SOMETHING with the Underworld line. Learning all languages at level one has always been an insult. If you go three hours of gameplay without someone offering to teach you the languages then you're doing something wrong. Getting to understand Lekku Twitching seems pretty useless. I've seen a lotta ideas on that, but it seems to be worth a different thread so I won't go into the main group, but allowing your Underworld skills to assist in your smuggling missions should be looked into.
The Underworld skills should not only give you access to higher paying missions, but should help you in ducking trouble when things go sour. Maybe it is a measure of how much you have to pay in order to get the Mission Issue Agency to take off the Bounty they place on you for failure. Maybe it is a chance that some npc gives you a warning you showed up on a bounty terminal. I dunno, but it should do something to help. I understand that right now it gives you a less chance of being caught with contraband but it isn't enough.
Anyways, that's my thoughts on contraband missions and bounties. I'm for a choice to do PvP. I'm for implementing changes that allow us to actually smuggle stuff. I'm for having the Underworld Skill do SOMETHING!
Thanks fer listening.

I like the normal mission versus critical mission thing,... just be important to make it worthwile to take the risk of getting a bounty placed on you... I think that it would be nice to make more options for players that BH can hunt... Also it would be cool if just by choosing an overt status and doing faction missions could get you on a bh hunter board,... but only like once per week to make sure to limit exploitation and charecters having bounties on you all the time.

OK people need to stop whining!
waa i wanna smuggle but don't wanna PVP. oh well get over it! you don't see the Jedi whining about not wanting to pvp (not alot atleast.) and as for people thinking its unfair that only the imperials can scan you. THE IMPERIALS CONTROL THE GALAXY in this time frame. why should the rebels scan? or the hutts perhaps? the way the devs had it lined out was perfect. good job keep up the good work devs, and don't let these complaining n00bs get in the way!

Dont think that's how everyone thinks here.
Id rather enjoy being hunted by a BH. It adds more of a thrill that as a smuggler you'd actually have to avoid Bounty Hunters, or just take them on.

You still believe in Santa Clause bringing you presents every year, right? Good work from the devs?

santa doesn't bring presents?..... an yeah i totally agree that being hunted (if you mess up) would add a level of excitement to the game! PVP is inevitable. People need to learn to deal with it! and if you dont want to PVP don't be a jedi, smuggler, bounty hunter, or any faction atall!
