Thread: Concerns about slicing.

Weapon & Armor breakage has been removed.
Removed for three reasons: 1) It was difficult to understand the breakage system. 2) It happened too often. Although it could be slowed, 3) it just wasn't fun anyway.
I've adjusted weapon slice bonuses and costs across the board.
Adding a crit chance should now be more of a worthwhile gamble. Certain combinations of slices are no longer patently better than others. Different types of slices should be more competitive. However, the numbers are still subject to change.
Some slices will now require components to apply.
Slices are unlimited item upgrades. I don't believe they should be free. The breakage system was too harsh a penalty. Instead, I'm enabling plan B. There are 9 components used by the current set of slices. Components cover a range in rarity and the difficulty of location in which they drop. For example, rebuilding the firing pin (level 4 fire rate) or applying a feather trigger pull (level 3 crit chance) now requires a Delicate Trigger Assembly, which drops in Death Watch Bunker and Avatar Platform. We may have to tweak the drop rate a few times to get it right.
This stuff should go to Test Center in a day or two.
So instead of adding Risk Vs Reward for everyone, you add another layer to the level/loot treadmill.
Slicing is bloody illegal! Now we just have another "need-to-get-to-compete" mechanic. Soon the game will be balanced using the top-of-the-crop sliced weapons as a threshold.
Thanks. I'll go stand in the AFK-Camping line...
but, at least its something... better then just telling us they will be doing something and never going through with it.
*turns the shameless plug machine off*

Can you be a master smuggler/jedi knight? Because this is the only way I see this system working. The smuggler shots are very weak. I dont see a master smuggler making it past the first battle droids in the DWB let alone getting inside to loot the tough kills. We are too much of a mix profession (crafting/combat) to really do any hard lairs. Im a TKM/Smuggler with some pistoleer mixed in for the defense bonuses and I never use a pistol. Any and all combat I do is with TK.I live longer that way. In the words of nearly every main star wars character "I haev a bad feeling about this".
Sorry, but I have to laugh HARD at this. My team and I can get past the first battle droids quite easily, and I am a master smuggler. Of course, I also have a good team and a master bh, but hey, that is the cost of getting good components. I love this new loot system.

Have you been to the DWB lately? Good luck getting anything from there. You'll die in 15 seconds.
And it's comments like this that make me laugh.
The DWB is not impossible with a good team. Sorry, but this loot system is great - you SHOULD have to do something hardto get the best slices.
I think the new loot system is perfect. And hey, if you are THAT scared poopless about the DWB, you can always run the Avatar - my team and I are making it a weekly thing it seems to beat the piss out of the blackscales there twice a week - it's actually a little TOO easy. Then again, its the team; I have been up there with other groups, and it seemed very hard because the team blew balls.

actually, you make a very good point against the new system here, in that, the need to be a very powerful combatant to get any high end loot pushes smugglers further into cookie cutter combat templates, which is one of the things the CU was supposed to prevent. (the CL system is a large part of why it isn't truly successful at this, but that is fodder for another thread)

No, it just reinforces the point that you need a good GROUP. Seriously, 1/3 of this thread is overreaction by people who seem to want to slice uber for free or cheap.

GM, as others have said, welcome back and thanks for a conversation here... it is important that we get thigns right.
that said, can you give us some numbers for what we'd be looking at at each tier... both for stat mods as well as customization %ages?
The idea is nice, but using loot can be very dangerous is that it is very easy to get the balance wrong and just wind up with a lot more useless items (in the eyes of players) in the system.
Take the first tier "common" loot for example. If the numbers work out that either a low tier slice isn't worth it in any combination of customizations, or that a higher tier slice is just easy enough to maintain and offers a better value then, well, we're just going to have a billion of the easy drops taking up vendor space (or being offered to smugglers by those hping they're worth something). See the skill modification stims as an example of this. Nice idea, not worth the effort for the bonus, so they all just take up space in the system
On the other hand you have the higer end. If these are too hard to obtain, or their value in the mods the posess aren't higer /enough/ then the next tier down, then they won't be sought after, and again, will just be looked at as junk thrown into the loot tables when people are looking for other items instead off those DWB or Avatar NPCs. (we already saw this in people working the DPS numbers and deeming 100% speed or damage slices to be pointless)
I'm not asking here to get 35% slices back, by any means. I'm just worried that there simply isn't room for all this cleverness in the system, and will remain that way until I start seeing some modification #s and drop rates.
Well from my understanding you still have to do the easy drop slice first then work up to the higher end component slicing. I am a bit curious about crit chance since this is new. I'm still leveling up my character on test to become a smuggler to test this stuff out. As far as loot camping goes, DWB could be camped to a degree but from my understanding the avatar is instance based so it shouldn't be as bad on the camping front. I'm curious as to how much random chance plays a role in slicing items now. Will there be a random chance on how high a slice can be depending on thelevel the smuggler is in the slicing tree? Slicing 1-4 and then master smuggler...how willhaving a lower skill in slicing effect what you can slice and how much you can slice.
Once concussion and panic shot is fixed to work as intended...stated earlier about how they are being worked on now in a different dev post...I think we'll be much better off when camping thesehigher end areas. However, some of these high end areasmay be a bit too hard and may need some balancing to have them work effectively post CU.
Also we have to be careful on howmuch is put into the loot table...we already are having problems finding many loot dropsor getting a loot drop that isn't the level we are looking for. Like how its hard to getkrayt pearl dropsthat are better than the average or more common quality. Will we run into the situation where we camp forslice components on the avatar or dwb and get common slice components instead of the rarer and hard to find drops...that are only supposed to frop in thgese areas?
A lot of things to test...hehe but at least we have something worthwile to test. For that reason I'm excited and very thankful that you're back here posting again GreenMarine.

Well.... saying I do use lvl 54 weapons on all my toons... with no cert... I don't NEED uber pistols to accomplish what I need to do. It may take longer, yes, but I don't need them.
The game is full of level 54 weapons that outdamage lightsabers with or without pearls. What's your point?

I'll go back to the post I made earlier. I'm not worried about reselling sliced weapons or telling people if they want uber slices they have to bring the uber stuff themselves. I'm in it for myself, I want to know how I will get the stuff to slice my personal weapons. And if you say trade forums that's just BS for the people who have XXX millions of credits. I have 1 million on a good day if i'm lucky, I want to know what I would have to do to get this kinda stuff. No one ever talks about how you get millions of credits (besides the ebay, are you encouraging it?) they just say don't complain when stuff costs that much.
I've played the game for 6 months now the only people I know in game that have several million at one time have all ebayed it. Is this the only way to get it? If so, then people should complain about the high prices.
Now, I'm trying to just bash..I'm simply saying that for the non-ebayer or non-hardcore gamer it is next to imposible to ever expect to get this kinda stuff.
