Would you feel the same way if you had to pay a doctor tons of money per attempt, and he had to keep trying to buff all 6 of your stats because it randomly buffs a stat? NO you would not. Not wanting this to change because you LIKE the fact people have to come to you 30 times to get the right slices is HILAROUS.

Basically yes. If you want a perfect slice on your weapon, you'd on average have to see a smuggler 30 times with 30 identical weapons, each time paying the smugglers fee. Now, if the smuggler runs a fixed 3k a slice, you can quickly add that up to a nifty amount of 90k. This is average senario, some people are less lucky. Could I choose to give you what you wanted, you'd see me one single time for, say, 5k, a lose of a wooping 85k on my part. While you can of course find smugglers going non-fixed prices, and even no charge below certain percentages, I sure most will admit they hardly make their money on the good slices, but rather the large amount of those in the 20-29% category for masters.
Anyway, on the subject, at first I figured, what a dumb profession, I can't even choose what I want, random is "stupid". However after now having sliced quite a bit (tho, not even master yet), I find it exciting, I love /telling 25% damage! Or 27% encumbrance! But also feel sad telling about the terrible 12% speed. I've yet to find someone unhappy with me, unhappy with the slice surely they are, but so far they've all known my min/max percentile, and they've all known I can't do anything but not screw up the wire cutting. Those getting the good slices are on the other hand happy with both me and the slice, so far a no lose system.
With regards to the excitment on both parties, I'd have to disagree with removing randomness, it simply adds too much to my gameplay, slicing becomes emotional, we both (customer and I) want the best, we both go through the roof on the good hits, both feel sadened (and admittedly curse randomness) on the bad ones. These things I find priceless.
I guess doctors are missing out on the "excitement" of getting a buff right.

Regarding the 'random' argument... You can consider Barry Bonds to be a 'Master Baseball Player'. Can he CHOOSE to hit a home run? Can he CHOOSE to win a game? No. It's all random. He's got a higher probability to hit home runs because of his Skill and Baseball XP (just so you know, I don't talk like this in real life, I'm just putting it down in SWG terms =). Baseball is like smuggling. Any dead horsewill tell you it's not science. Sometimes you strike out, sometimes you hit a grand slam. My customers and I are both happy when I get a nice solid double.

Thing is, I don't need a buff, just as I don't need a slice. So, you see it's rather dangerous assuming what other people would accept. Without a buff I can't run around killing solo various places, but then again, I love groups and without the solo-enabling buffs, there'd be more of them, so a clear win in my book.
Say docs had a chance of buffing between numbers, would people still get them? I think they would, however docs wouldn't be able to charge 10k+ for it, they'd have to maybe do like smugglers and go by increase. Getting a slice is doing a gamble, YOU paying the smuggler gambles, I don't want to hear people crying over their misfortune in gambling. It's another thing with smugglers actually returning money to people due to "bad"(1) slices, those smugglers are just nice people, consider yourself lucky if it happens to you, but it's their fine right not to return a single credit, YOU did the gamble, they just work for the casino.
(1) Is there actually a thing like a bad slice? Isn't it more people bought the wrong weapon or armor hoping for a slice to improve it? Maybe they bought hoping a slice would make it üpper, but as gambling goes, it didn't.

Unfortunately I can't edit yet.
No, I don't find the fact people having to go to a smuggler 30 times or more hilarious. I find it hilarious if they actually feel they need a perfect slice. If they could settle with damage or speed, they'd have to come twice (on average), if they want high damage or speed percent, they'll have to drop by a lot more. If you can't live with less than perfection that's your wallets problem, in the end it's a streak from so many other games, where you just pick up a weapon and it's always the same - perfect.

Seeing as how loonatik has never posted in our good forum before, I'm assuming he got that awesome 17% speed slicehe was looking foron his kick ass new weapon. /troll off
I have never had anything sliced. I buy all my armor pre-sliced. The problem is, that vendor is gone, and now im left to buying normal armor. I am not looking forward to buying 20 sets just to get 1 sliced. It is a problem that needs to be fixed.
Gimme a break. Slicing needs to be overhauled as well as Spices....the whole bleepin' profession. As Dreven said, batter up on this red-headed dead horse.
Slicing will get overhauled where it's not just "point, click, point, click, result". I'm sure it'll be some sort of puzzle or skill thing. This isn't new and us old timers have heard it about a million times. And believe me it's nearly as frustrating to the smugglerwhen we see a precious 400 max damage Krayt Geonosian pistol get sliced for 18% speed.
When you think about it (as pointed out many times in this forum), we are the only profession that you are giving your personal belongings to that could be worth up to millions and millions of credits on the assumption that you're getting them back. **edit**, we could just as easily run off with them and be complete scammers as we could take 10k to slice your uber weapon worth 300k and turn it into a 900k gun. Our services can up the value of your stuff many times over and only for a few thousand credits.
I fail to see how this has anything to do with the subject of my post.
People already complain that 5k is too much to slice a weapon when the same weapon with the same slice bought from a weaponsmith's vendor would easily run you 25% more at the least. So how much should we charge for "pick-O-slice" with experimented tools for that almost guaranteed 35% damage slice. Be happy that your weapon is better.
So, would you take the same stance if a doctor could randomly buff a stat? Where you had to pay tons of money per attempt just to get the right buff? And im not talking about the POWER of the buff, im talking about what STAT is buffed.
Just to clarify...I'm with you on the slicing thing. It shouldn't be complete random but again, slicing shouldn't be running rampant like it is. So you have a point for the time being but after our revamp, your point should be moot.
You as an average PC shouldn't be using illegally modified equipment without running the risk of a serious fine or death. Smugglers and Bounty Hunters yeah...they use illegal gear because of the nature of their work. Your average Master Rifleman or Master Swordsman shouldn't be able to use the gear without fear of getting caught and receiving a penalty.
"But that gimps me sicne I can't use sliced stuff!?" No it doesn't. You're average Joe shouldn't even own sliced stuff. It's illegal! That's why you have Smugglers...to Smuggle your illegal stuff.
But back to your point that you so love. Yeah, we think as Master Smugglers we should have some control. But we also think that the your precious slicing shouldn't be for everyone as a standard when you buy some weapons or armor.

Meh, I think my baseball analogy while thin still holds a little water.
Keep slicing random, unless of course you WANT us to charge 20K a slice, and believe me, we will.

>>I guess doctors are missing out on the "excitement" of getting a buff right.<<
Been there, done that. I must admit that I miss those 3300 constitution buffs that can make a character invincible while grinding on bolle bols or rancors, but I don't miss those 1200 buffs that made me scream and look for someone to db me so I could try again. I hate to think how many buffpacks I wasted....
Don't feel like I'm missing, no sir.

with other professions it's based on skill to determine the quality and outcome, with us it's all luck,
Ithink it's a little rude to dis our profession like that, at least give us the ability to slice the stat we want, is it that much to ask....

Scenario -
Guy: can u slice my weapon
Smuggler: sure, (slices for speed)
Guy: Damn i wanted dmg. brb (buys new wpn from smithy)
Smithy: cool i selling lots of weapons today
Guy: ok try again
Smuggler: ok (slices for dmg)
Guy: awesome i go shoot stuffs now
Comical, but you get the idea. Slicing should stay random. Aside from the money/income aspect (which i dont care about) Im an RPer (omg an RPer in an RPG? whats all that about) and like the whole, "street-slicing" idea. In fact im up for a random chance to even make the item worse, or have it break into itsy bitsy pieces
