Basically yes. If you want a perfect slice on your weapon, you'd on average have to see a smuggler 30 times with 30 identical weapons, each time paying the smugglers fee. Now, if the smuggler runs a fixed 3k a slice, you can quickly add that up to a nifty amount of 90k. This is average senario, some people are less lucky. Could I choose to give you what you wanted, you'd see me one single time for, say, 5k, a lose of a wooping 85k on my part. While you can of course find smugglers going non-fixed prices, and even no charge below certain percentages, I sure most will admit they hardly make their money on the good slices, but rather the large amount of those in the 20-29% category for masters.
Anyway, on the subject, at first I figured, what a dumb profession, I can't even choose what I want, random is "stupid". However after now having sliced quite a bit (tho, not even master yet), I find it exciting, I love /telling 25% damage! Or 27% encumbrance! But also feel sad telling about the terrible 12% speed. I've yet to find someone unhappy with me, unhappy with the slice surely they are, but so far they've all known my min/max percentile, and they've all known I can't do anything but not screw up the wire cutting. Those getting the good slices are on the other hand happy with both me and the slice, so far a no lose system.
With regards to the excitment on both parties, I'd have to disagree with removing randomness, it simply adds too much to my gameplay, slicing becomes emotional, we both (customer and I) want the best, we both go through the roof on the good hits, both feel sadened (and admittedly curse randomness) on the bad ones. These things I find priceless.
A friend had a stroke of luck with the Acklay, looted 11 135 min, 71 max bones. One schem and a little factory time later he had 9 shiny new Power Hammers at 6.0 spd, 494 max damage unsliced (the 11th bone went in a stun baton for a friend). He's in Australia, I'm in the UK, so I was heading off to bed while the factory ran. My partner in the WS business is west coast, so he pulled them out of the fac when done and off went our happy swordsman to get these things sliced.
7 out of 9 speed.
17% and 28% damage on the other 2.
This is a finely-tuned Master skill and we don't know what we're doing when we prepare this "series of modifications"? Give...me...a...break.
Also, please, for the love of God keep tool experimentation out of slicing, the lastthing I want to dois spend my time andeffort making 99%tools, then spend my time getting 99% effective Upgrade kits from an overpriced Weaponsmith or Armorsmith
Ok it's a reply and agreement witha statement that is non-topic related, but I completely agree with keeping experimentation out of slicing (and spices for that matter). Not having experimentation is one of the things that keeps smuggling bearable. Experimentation and searching for the bestresourcesmay be interesting for some player, but I want none of it.
As far as weapon upgrades are concerned - I recently took up Novice armoursmith and weaponsmith and drove the prices down on the server for AUK's and WUK's by half over what WS and AS were charging. I'm sorry for any AS and WS out there - but the quality of the resources doesn't matter, and charging what amounts to 8-10cpu for Upgrade Kit's is way overboard.
With the petition? Disagree.
Keep slicing random, but up the percentage for masters. And change the frigging menus a bit too - they look terrible. Colour coded icons or something. That descriptive text in the menu is pointless.

Seeing as how loonatik has never posted in our good forum before, I'm assuming he got that awesome 17% speed slicehe was looking foron his kick ass new weapon. /troll off
I have never had anything sliced. I buy all my armor pre-sliced. The problem is, that vendor is gone, and now im left to buying normal armor. I am not looking forward to buying 20 sets just to get 1 sliced. It is a problem that needs to be fixed.
Gimme a break. Slicing needs to be overhauled as well as Spices....the whole bleepin' profession. As Dreven said, batter up on this red-headed dead horse.
Slicing will get overhauled where it's not just "point, click, point, click, result". I'm sure it'll be some sort of puzzle or skill thing. This isn't new and us old timers have heard it about a million times. And believe me it's nearly as frustrating to the smugglerwhen we see a precious 400 max damage Krayt Geonosian pistol get sliced for 18% speed.
When you think about it (as pointed out many times in this forum), we are the only profession that you are giving your personal belongings to that could be worth up to millions and millions of credits on the assumption that you're getting them back. **edit**, we could just as easily run off with them and be complete scammers as we could take 10k to slice your uber weapon worth 300k and turn it into a 900k gun. Our services can up the value of your stuff many times over and only for a few thousand credits.
I fail to see how this has anything to do with the subject of my post.
People already complain that 5k is too much to slice a weapon when the same weapon with the same slice bought from a weaponsmith's vendor would easily run you 25% more at the least. So how much should we charge for "pick-O-slice" with experimented tools for that almost guaranteed 35% damage slice. Be happy that your weapon is better.
So, would you take the same stance if a doctor could randomly buff a stat? Where you had to pay tons of money per attempt just to get the right buff? And im not talking about the POWER of the buff, im talking about what STAT is buffed.
