I'm not sure how many jobs you've ever had, Nick, but at every job I have ever had - including my current one, which is as close to a dream job as I could imagine - there is always soap-operatic backstabbing drama.
I got in a fistfight with a co-worker the other night, I have another co-worker who is actively trying to get me fired because he feels like I'm stealing his authority, and I know of other co-workers who may or may not be secretlyworking for the competition and selling us out. Now this is a pretty extreme environment, those are pretty extreme examples, and I have a lot of leverage which I am using to eliminatethis drama(and these people), but it is not too far beyond the usual BS you encounter in any workplace. I have found that if you like your job andknow you are doing some good, it is easier to accept this kind of workplace drama. But I have worked enough jobs in enough different places to know that workplace drama is an inescapable fact of life.
So keep your chin up, butremember to duck once in a while.

Last time I went to Wal-Mart, my car got scratched by some Japanese fad-SUV (aka not a Chevy Blazer, Ford Explorer, Jeep, ect.... some Japanese or Euro-import)

The real problem is they are not unionized. They push this non-union attitude that is ungodly. We once had a Member that didn't like a cashier because of something the cashier's sister did. So the member treated the cashier badly and eventually got her a write-up. The cashier said that this never would have happened if there was a union and the fired her on the spot!
I know there are some businesses and companies that shouldn't be unionized. It's simply a waste of time, money, and resources for it to be like that.
But when you get to a company like Wal*Mart/Sam's Club that just gets out of control, something needs to be done. You've got a business that is infamous for its treatment of employee rights, building its stores on top of sacred burial grounds (was in Hawaii recently and currently in Mexico), and cities filing petitions and injunctions to keep the stores out of their life.
It really is insane and something strait out of the comics. And non of this or one-tenth of the crap that goes on there in day-to-day operation would happen if there was a union to watch our backs. "Hey, Nick...we're parting company because of your attitude. I simply don't want anyone working for me that doesn't like who they're working for." "Excuse me, but I like my job, I simply stated that sometimes stuff just doesn't make sense and it bothers me." "Exactly, that's why we're letting you go." "Hold on while I call my union rep or you can let me go and I'll see you in court." Man that would have been nice.
Nic, I am an employee of the USPS and a union steward for the National Association of Letter Carriers in my office. A good, strong union like ours certainly does help the employee.I'm certainly proud of the NALC because this union is full of backbone. A union provides employees with many benefits including wages, general protections, overtime standards, work conditions, employee fairness, DISPUTE RESOLUTION (a biggie), etc. It really is nearly impossible to get fired as a union member...lol However, in the story of the harasser, that person would have been gone...big time. The USPS/NALC memorandum on Violence in the Workplace would have been used to can that dude quick.
Basically, I would not feel comfortable working for a non-unionized workplace. Not all unions are great, but they're better than nothing.

After I filled out my psych evaluation..my soon to be supervisor stopped by and asked me a question about one of my answers. The question was in short. "Do you think people advance in their profession based on their work ethic/results or do they advance based on who they know?" I of course answered "Who you know"
This so puzzled the guy that he asked me the same question again. I answered the same. He looked at me like I had giant spider eyes or something and finally asked me to clarify. I explained that I believe in the real world, who you know wins out over how hard you work about 80% of the time. Look at the current President. (Bush's 1st term) He again asked me if I was sure that was how I wanted to answer. I began to think they may cut off my legs if I didn't change my answer so I added that I'm sure that's not how it works here. He smiled and said ok..see you at work tomorrow. /boggle

In fact I ran away in sheer terror. I still look over my shoulder from time to time expecting some 90 year old blue hair to sneak up on me with a Hiel Sam button on her blue vest and a rusty box knife in her hand. You know the type.
