My mom recently went to work for wal-mart and is now the store customer service manager. She gets really pissed off if I dog on wal-wart, which I frequently do. She wasn't to pleased when I told her that old Sam made his billions be making people virtual wage slaves, and wrecking the economies of any town they move in, which then forces those people to shop at the very store that destroyed their downtown.
I don't know any other place that can keep people working part time for less money than a full time minimum wage job worker, and have them think that the place is wonderful, on top of no benefits what so ever. It makes me wish I still lived in Germany, where huge chains like that are almost unheard of, where the family shop is still king.

Nick, I wish you the best of luck. Here is what I gathered from your initial description of the event. You said you were leaving, were you off the clock? if you were, then they can't hold you accountable for what you say. They can try to pull the "you represent the company" bullcrap...but only when your actually working there. If your clocked out, then at that moment in time you are not an employee there, you are just another guy.
If you were on the clock, then it is still bullcrap. You are free to give opinions if you'd like, and can challenge any management that they haven't said something similar at some point in time...even if it was in their head! 
Besides you said "sometimes" doesn't mean right then...just sometimes, like when your at home and not at work.

They can still find something to fire you for, but if you did get your job back...then you can still fight it based off a "retaliation" firing. At least here in Maine you can do that, especially if you go over your supervisors head to get your job back.
Otherwise, go for the revenge. You know go there, and hang around a bit, chit-chat with the employees about the work. Say, "man,cashing out the registers sucks, I always hated doing that..." employee X says"yeah, Iknow what you mean." Then point and yell "bad company attitude! bad companyattitude!" over and over running around the store.

and people wonder why I haven't been to a wal-mart or sam's club in over 2 years. Stop supporting this cancer on society folks.

Yep. Sounds like retail...
This is why I've always advocated that, when working retail, try and find a UNION shop. Like Krogers, for instance is the UFCW. That way they can't fire you out of the blue like that, not without the union steward raising nine kinds of holy hell (if they're any good as a steward at least).
There are two kinds of good work environments:
1) Union shop. Someone's watching your back.
2) The smart shop. This is the one that figured out that if they DON'T want Unions breathing down their necks, they treat their employees with respect.
Find one of those two, as rare as they both may be.

Honestly depending on what state he is in they might not have to write him up. I know in Texas they can pretty much fire you for anything they feel like.
But honestly I would go to the local paper at the very least see about getting it in the 'rants and raves' section if your paper has one. Also another thing, see if your friends were thinking about quitting anyway. If they were have them call the regional manager or district manager whoever it might be and inform him/her/it that they are quitting because of "blah" make sure they mention you.

I'm not sure how many jobs you've ever had, Nick, but at every job I have ever had - including my current one, which is as close to a dream job as I could imagine - there is always soap-operatic backstabbing drama.
