Just hope that she doesn't spread her own little "nasty rumor" to you.
haha
The problem lies with the fact that Wal*Mart Corp. is such a large and powerfull company. They make I-don't-know-how-many millions or billions of dollars each year with thousands apon thousands of employees nation and world-wide. Well, that's really not the problem...
The real problem is they are not unionized. They push this non-union attitude that is ungodly. We once had a Member that didn't like a cashier because of something the cashier's sister did. So the member treated the cashier badly and eventually got her a write-up. The cashier said that this never would have happened if there was a union and the fired her on the spot!
I know there are some businesses and companies that shouldn't be unionized. It's simply a waste of time, money, and resources for it to be like that.
But when you get to a company like Wal*Mart/Sam's Club that just gets out of control, something needs to be done. You've got a business that is infamous for its treatment of employee rights, building its stores on top of sacred burial grounds (was in Hawaii recently and currently in Mexico), and cities filing petitions and injunctions to keep the stores out of their life.
It really is insane and something strait out of the comics. And non of this or one-tenth of the crap that goes on there in day-to-day operation would happen if there was a union to watch our backs. "Hey, Nick...we're parting company because of your attitude. I simply don't want anyone working for me that doesn't like who they're working for." "Excuse me, but I like my job, I simply stated that sometimes stuff just doesn't make sense and it bothers me." "Exactly, that's why we're letting you go." "Hold on while I call my union rep or you can let me go and I'll see you in court." Man that would have been nice.

Also, in Nick's case, it depens on whether the state he lives in is a right-to-work state, like here in Kansas. They can fire you for no reason at all and you have no recourse. As an aside, I fecking hate wal-mart. They have always been known as the locusts that will consume your town if they move in.
Good book.

I have been a floor merchandiser for Sam's for 2 years. Tonight (11/12) was my last night on the floor for Sam's. I was moving to 1-Hour Photo as a Technician tomorrow/Saturday.
But, that was not meant to be. I was canned tonight...the day before I could move positions. Fired. After two years of bullcrap (11/9 was anniversary), just got a new raise, bought new pants and a haircut today for the new job, and was moving to the new position tomorrow that could earn me a $1.50/hour raise in 90 days.
Wednesday night, a Member came up to me and told me he had been waiting for 30 (thirty) minutes on a couch. I radioed to the other guys what was up adn they said they couldn't get the couch down from the steel because they needed one more spotter for the forklift (policy). So I told the dude I would take care of it. SO, I helped spot the lift and the dude got his couch in 5 minutes. I was promptly chewed out for leaving the Electronics dept., nevermind the fact that I helped the Member get on his way before you had to wait a full hour.
End of the night came around and we were leaving, I was outside talking to my best friend about it (who also got chewed out for trying to learn how to run a register when it was the wrong time of night for it......apparently) and about the time I said the phrase "Sometimes I just can't stand Sam's", this stupid little Check Out Supervisor walked by and heard me. I had trained this girl not 7 months ago before she moved to COS...she's dislectic even and I walked her through how to do her job easier. Well, she friggin snitched and I was canned for a "bad company attitude" even though I denied denied denied.
Sam's Club sucks worse than SOE. This is how they've treated not only me, but my friends who have worked there and most likely the employees that will work there in the future. If you care about someone that you know is looking for a job, DON'T send the to Sam's and if you hear they're going there...warn them that they treat their employees like dirt...for real. If you'veheard Wal*Mart sucks in that regard, you heard right.
Nick, they just promoted you. You shown initiative and helped get a customer their product quickly. My question would be "Where was the Check Out Supervisor or the manager? Why did you have to leave your position to help this customer when it was theirresponsibility in the first place to take care of that customer?". There is only one reason to fire someone that quickly, they are covering their ass because it was their failure, not yours.
Write a polite letter to their supervisor. They may be in trouble already and looking out for their butts. hence the knee-jerk reaction of firing you withouta letter of warning. Get a friend to read over it before you send it. Make sure it is coherent, polite and to the point. It will reflect well on you. If you can eloquently state your case to their supervisor, then that supervisor will know that you can do the same in a letter to the editor to the local paper.
I truly believe walmart is attempting to become the Fourth Reich. They showed their plans for expanding into and dominating foreign markets while maintaining their strangle hold on the domestic side. They even acknowledged that it 'sounds like Wal Mart wants to take over the world'. But they assured us that they would never really try that..
After I filled out my psych evaluation..my soon to be supervisor stopped by and asked me a question about one of my answers. The question was in short. "Do you think people advance in their profession based on their work ethic/results or do they advance based on who they know?" I of course answered "Who you know"
This so puzzled the guy that he asked me the same question again. I answered the same. He looked at me like I had giant spider eyes or something and finally asked me to clarify. I explained that I believe in the real world, who you know wins out over how hard you work about 80% of the time. Look at the current President. (Bush's 1st term) He again asked me if I was sure that was how I wanted to answer. I began to think they may cut off my legs if I didn't change my answer so I added that I'm sure that's not how it works here. He smiled and said ok..see you at work tomorrow. /boggle
I never showed up. Ever.
In fact I ran away in sheer terror. I still look over my shoulder from time to time expecting some 90 year old blue hair to sneak up on me with a Hiel Sam button on her blue vest and a rusty box knife in her hand. You know the type.
Praise Jesus and Sam Walton, mien fuhrer! Zig Hiel! Zig Hiel! Zig Hiel!

That second paragraph is some good advice. I would echo that and say that you should be as polite and calm as possible with the supervisor's supervisor.Perhapssay thatyou think there was some kind of mistake, that you don't understand why you would be fired so quickly after putting in such hard work, that you are interested in keeping your job, and that you hope they willreconsider. I would try to carry a tone of innocence and astonishment through the letter - you were trying to help and they fired you for it.
Speaking as a lawyer, I don't think you need to bother with the law here. Often, when you have to invoke the law to enforce something, everyone loses. That's not a universal rule, but in this case, I would not bother considering a legal alternative unless you exhaust your other options. The unspoken possibility of a suit often accomplishes more than actually threatening one.
One way or another, this is the perfect time to ask yourself a few questions: Is keepingthis job really worth a lawsuit? Do you really want to return to work for a place that might arbitrarily fire you some other day? Is there something else you'd rather be doing? Where can I go on vacation for a while? (Okay, that last one requires some savings and some confidence that you'll find a job when you return, but that's what I'd be asking myself...)
So if you really want the job back, I recommend sendinga polite letter to your supervisor's supervisor. This could be much more simple to resolve than you imagined. And if you get stonewalled, oh well. One thing I have learned wandering the poorest countries of the earth is that Westerners have it pretty easy compared to everyone else- you can always find another job. Maybe it won't be a dream job, and maybe it's something you don't really enjoy, but at least it's something that pays the bills, takes up less than half the day, and won't get you killed. That is a luxury that most people in the world don't have. And it's something that makes you feel a bit more privileged and relaxed when you get back; you realize that your lifereally isn't that rough after all, and that people with much less to their names and muchmore unrewarding jobsare complaining a lot less about life.
Anyway, good luck, Nick.
