Thread: Smugglers in SWG History as written by the Devs
I understand, IndySWG.
Right now, I look on the words of electricnomad and realize that they really have come true. How much of what we are getting told isn't a lie???
I sit and soak in a game where a million Jedi fight the war that non-Jedi should be. I see the life of non-Jedi MORE dangerous than what a Jedi's should be.
This game falls a loooong way from Star Wars in some VERY crucial respects: no smugglers, no Imperial oppression, no underworld, no law, no rarity of Jedi.
You can twist a game only so far before it turns into rubbish. Seeing smugglers never make the Kessel Run and Jedi rule the galaxy in huge herds is absolutely disgusting.

After two plus years of broken promises, delays, bait and switches, and outright lies, a Developer finally, for once, tells us the truth.

I can say that we can't really give any specifics about our plans, other than we plan to stop promising a smuggler revamp that we never seem to get around to delivering.
It's very unlikely we'd ever do a full profession revamp for smugglers anyway.

I about broke down when I read that. I've been in this since the ground game was in beta ... and tonight I'm going to load up my account settings to see when I expire ... clearly they aren't interested in creating a STAR WARS environment.
Yes, that was a tough one to take.
It's quite clear (with the release of the fantabulous KOTOR expansion) that LucasArts has lost touch with at least 1/3 to 1/2 of its player base. And really, I bet fully 1/2 of those going Jedi are doing so because THERE IS NOTHING ELSE TO DO. There IS no "Elder Game" for any of the other professions, and several of the other professions have been steadily nerfed OR have suffered from benign neglect.
No other profession, though, can claim the degree of neglect as the Smuggler. WE CANNOT AND NEVER HAVE BEEN ABLE TO FRIGGIN SMUGGLE.
I cannot express how disappointed I am with LucasArts and with this game (which should now and henceforth be called KOTOR Online).
I guess you can say I was naive for believing LucasArts and SOE when they represented to me that I could play as a Smuggler in this game. You could say I was naive for believing that they would make Jedi "very very very rare" and difficult to keep (blah blah blah).
ButI guess you could say that I am the fool for hanging on after the first year of broken promises regarding both of those issues. And a gold-plated one for hanging on for yet ANOTHER year. I believed that they would keep their word and continued to PAY and play, despite the evidence to the contrary.
I believe writing to SOE will change nothing. I believe that it is LucasArts, in theMISGUIDED and SHORTSIGHTED manner of gigantic media, that has been the Svengali behind the destruction of what was and could have been an incredibly immersive WORLD (which would garner them a lasting, loyal player base) versus a shallow game into which anUNCOTROLLEDALPHA CLASS (which receives the bulk of development time) has been introduced; where we are all or soon will be the same -- all Jedi in a dumbed-down world of "instanced content," no galactic civil war and no timeline but that which is dictated by Lucas' latest marketing need.
A game that shallow will be short-lived. The kids who want to be Jedi will soon grow bored and leave when everyone is a Jedi and there is no one around "pwn", and NOTHING LEFT TO DO.

beer and pie time?
/bump for anyone who hasn't read this and wept already.
In fact I have decided to make it my mission to keep this at the top of these forums until we get our revamp so that every new smuggler who come here will know our history.

I am still stunned even after having been here for all of this. What a document. It's such a great historical piece and I believe that someday it will bea "lesson" in game development and community management under "How not to do things." What a study in the dynamics of a game company and its customers.
Just a thought but has anyone ever wondered if our profession is being kept down purly because there afraid of the "moral" implications of getting players to traffic illegal goods?
I really hope not especially considering what other games get away with doing on a "one of" basis. But living the life of one day in day out is a little different in some peoples view.
