If any of this is going to be put in play, they need to look at giving smugglers some evasion skills. If they don't want to give us the same stealth type skills as they're giving to rangers fine...ie: the whole theft thing, I can live without the theft thing. I do however feel we should be able to evade people who are after us or our cargo (rangers/bounty hunters). I don't think this should mean just slicing their mission terms and getting our names off their terms, though I want that, I think it involves a skillset that smugglers need. There are others who have come up with a detailed version of Evasion and what it should entail but I of course can't find it now. If anyone cares to supply what I'm talking about, I'd be very grateful.

I like this idea if it's implemented well.

As others have said we need some kind of pasive observation skill that works as a dice roll against a rangers stealth ability. Also if a rangers does manage to steal our cargo we need the ability to get it back from them with in a limited time say 1 min.

The way I would like to see this implimented is this.

Proposal

Smugglers get an observation skill in their skill tree.

You get a bonus as you go up the skill tree and by master smuggler you have a 50/50 chance of breaking a master rangers stealth ability.

If a master ranger does steal your cargo he is imediatly attackable and you have a time limit to fight him and steal it backfrom his incaped body or corpse

If you manage to break his stealth at any time heis imediatly attackable and youhave the choice of either running or fight the ranger. Which one you choose would depend on weather he has just stolen your valuable cargo or if you found him before he had had the chance.

This must be consensual on both sides.

I would sugest the only way to make this work is to change the ranger missions so that rangers can get missions to steal cargo from smugglers. The ranger will be told of the cargos delivery location and can than make their wayto the deliver locationand go into stealth mode and atept to steal the cargo from the smuggler when he arrives.

A ranger can get there first because they will not have the limits on them that the smugglers do. I.e travel restrictions and the chance of being attacked by NPC's.

Both the ranger and the smuggler must be notified when they take their respective mission that the chance exisits that this mission may result in a PVP onfrontaion.

These should be limited to high lvl missions

Why not give the rangers the same underworld reputationsystem as smugglers. If a ranger fails these high lvl missions they decrease their underworld reputation and if it falls to low they also can be hunted by BH's

Giving smuggler an observation skill could add to not only the ranger confrotations but could be very usefull in the galactic civil war. Smugglers could be hired to help stop ranger spies.

Also If the ability extended to both the cover used by riffile men and force cloak imagin the fun that could be had. smugglers behired by BH's to break Jedi's cloak or used in PVP battle to spot rifflemen who are using conceal shot.

Stealing, no not really. Unless it's stealing an identity or the key/code to something we have to get past... but we have slicing for that if it were ever implemented properly.

What's troubling is 2 fold:

1. They're still only talking about really smuggling spice.

2. They're talking about us being content for Rangers. I have no problem being content for another profession, but give it a better reasoning than stealing spice from me. Make em take missions to interrupt me smuggling for someone's rival. Make it something worthwhile, not just "as part of the new smuggling missions, Rangers can steal spice from Smugglers running said missions".

No, stealing really isn't a part of being a Smuggler, but it's a lot more underhanded then anything Smugglers have, even with the proposed Smuggler changes. While stealing may not be truely "Smugglerish", the skill would really make me, atleast, feel more "illegal" and underhanded then I do now, or probably ever will, as a Smuggler.
As pointed out in another reply to another thread... it's like Rangers now have more part in the Underworld then Smugglers do.

It all seems very interesting, but won't PvP theft result in griefing eventually? Maybe I'm old and cynical, but I can see little gangs of thieving rangers, followed up by server-forum lists of rangers who can't be trusted...it just explodes into flames from there. Won't rangers just go and camp the smuggler mission givers just to pick pocket honest smugglers when they turn up for a job?!

I really don't see how it's going to work out.

hmm, very interesting indeed. allow me to run a hyperthetical scenario by you smugglers:

smuggler 'I-B pegleg' is carring a load of spices intended for jabba, somewhere else. on his travels he passes through bestine. while some helpless level 13 noob is distacting the imperial troops at the gate to the starport he heads in.

inside however is ranger xXxjames bondxXx, who steals I-B pegleg's cargo. what happens then? Is our hero I-B out of luck, or can he retaliate (/tell xXxjames concussionshot ftw, noob!)? can he hire a bountyhunter (/tt I'll get my main!one!1), or will he meet the wrath of fettclone pwnzjoo the resident bounty hunter?

I am hoping, the fettclone pwnzjoo gets to kill them both, and letthe maker sort them out...

but, this opens up alot of interesting possibilities.

oh, and.. happy ITLP day all, arr!

There isn't enough info to make sense yet but with SOEs track record in the Jedi/BH relationship it really has the propensity to be the next great player grief. Are smugglers really despirate enough to be noticed that they would subject themselves to being another professions content?

This would only be good to the Jedi because the player griefing BH would instantly grind Ranger for the fresh chances to grief.

Sure you can, but since they don't carry wallets its useless. No one likes loose change. This one time, I tried it, but the Krayt had some gummy worms that were all sticky in there. I decided that day to never do that again.

I don't want to sound picky, but I'd rather not run between three planets to a final destination only to find a ranger camping my delivery target.

That's the first thing I see happening with Rangers having the ability to steal our cargo from us. Smuggler A gets his mission, and Ranger B gets an intercept mission, with a waypoint to the delivery destination. Said Ranger goes to his waypoint and camps the point while camo'd waiting for Smuggler A to get there, only to steal his cargo, and run away(yes, I do know nothing has been confirmed, I'm just acting on a worst-case scenario form of thinking).

I don't want our Smuggling missions to consist of running from thieves. I want to be running from the people who catch the thieves.

That's just my 2 cents.

EDIT: So far as the observation skill idea... I love it,it's a great balanceto the stealth skill. An observation tree would work well replacing spices.

3. WHY THE HELL CAN'T WE GET A REVAMP?!?!?!?! Seriously, they "don't" want to focus onlarge scale profession revamps, yet others are getting them. Once again, the rule that is applied to us, is never applied to the rest of the game. Wes, this IS a question that needs to get answered at this point. They've now brought theft into the game. Having a smuggling system SHOULD not be that far off. Better yet, they say PvP theft is supported, so PfP smuggling SHOULD now be supported (at least in the minds of the team).

You aren't the only one mad. But getting an answer to this question isn't all that relevant or important. It seems all you're looking for is for the devs to admit that they haven't released the Smuggler revamp yet. That's time and energy I'd rather them spend on actually getting the revamp out. If you ask me, this Ranger revamp is in part a revamp for the Smugglers because it's setting up a characteristic of smuggling and its perils.

Since spice is rumored becoming a non-craftable substance which can only be gained as a reward for Smuggler missions, our whole 4th skill tree becomes obsolete, thus there should be more than ample "space" to implement observation/stealth skills.

As for the whole capture the flag thing, I don´t know. Why are rangers getting stealth/demolition skills, that should be inherent commando skills? That said, why would anyone hire a Ranger to get spices from a Smuggler? Shouldn´t it be part of the BH´s job to catch the thief and return the stolen property to the crimelord? If so, will Rangers be hunted by BHs instead of Smugglers?

IMO, it would be a very good idea to implement the Smuggler/BH relation before introducing the Rangers to it, when "it" isn´t really there yet.

I completely support the "observation/stealth" ideaproposed by Mystique2000uk. If implemented, and done well, it could be a very nice addition to the game. Oh and being able to shoot the Ranger if he/she is discovered is a must

As *I* understand it, Rangers are heading to more of a 'spec ops' role - and 'stealing' doesn't really suit that does it? And it seems more of a commando role anyways, to me at least.

I also agree that it is best to stabilise/finalise the system between Smuggler's and BH's first, before introducing Ranger's the the relationship.

And finally, although "stealing" isn't something too 'smuggler-ish', what's wrong about 'smuggling' the contents of someones wallet into your possession?
