Hmm.

Okay I see what you're saying about exploiting for money.

It's sort of a change in perspective though. So what you're saying is Infamywould bedesirable in and of itself, rather than something you want to avoid. That makes it a little harder to draw a comparison between PvP and PvE Smuggling. In the original example, you could get a 5% slicing bonus, the drawback of which was an increase in Infamy. That could lead to PvP, unless you used a special tool gained through PvE missions that would "cover your tracks" and prevent the Infamy increase. In what you are proposing, what is the new example?

Might it not be simpler to figure out a way to increase the penalty for Bounty Hunter death? Also we would assume a Smuggler Bounty wouldn't be worth as much as a Jedi so it takes less to balance it out.

How about this: After you are killed by a Bounty Hunter, you lose access to the Infamy-increasing path to advanced Smuggler rewards. So for some time afterwards, you don't get the option of the 5% slicing bonus in exchange for the Infamy increase. Because your 'good name' has been sullied by the run-in with the Bounty Hunter, your personal slicing style isn't valued for a while.

On a side note, I still haven't really thought of a good way this can affect Spice. Ideally I wanted to track Spice trading, and haveSmugglersearn Infamy when they trade Spice to other players (rather than making it, though I suppose you could do that too). But perhaps the best way is to have certain Spices be Infamous (the Spices 4 and Master Smuggler spices) and when you create or possibly trade those Spices, your Infamy rises. What the PvE alternative to this is, I'm not really sure. Maybe it's an additive that makes the Spice untraceable so that it can be crafted or traded without Infamy increase. That might be pretty cool actually. And again, if you get killed by a Bounty Hunter, you can't craft/trade that kind of Spice for a certain amount of time.

Okay what do you guys think of that instead: Getting killed by a Bounty Hunter denies you access to the high-end Smuggler stuff for some amount of time. Perhaps until your Infamy cools off to 0 again, or some low level? I think that would be a pretty good penalty and wouldn't require making the system much more complex.

Okay, Now poor HOTDOG is confused...

Let's see...

Infamy is good cause if I have enough of it I can get a bonus to slicing and spicing. This is true if I PvP or PvE.
So bottom line: I WANT infamy.

BUT-

Too much Infamy gets my name up on the BH terminals- And someone will try to kill me- which would make me lose my Infamy and the bonus to slicing and spicing that came with it. That's BAD because I worked hard to get that bonus!
Now I have to start over at Infamy 0.

Is that what we are talking about here?

If so- what does a person not interested in PvP do to stay off the BH terms besides laying low and not slicing for a while?
I know laying low should be enough (I think it is) but I have a feeling the Devs and some players are going to require a little more than that.

Also, where is the imbalance to those who don't want to PvE here? Seems pretty fair to me so far...

Well yes and no.

I never intended Infamy to be a good thing. That's an interesting idea, but that wasn't what I was thinking before.

What I am proposing is this:

When you do high-end Smuggler stuff you gain Infamy. If you get too much Infamy, you get Bountied. If you get killed, you can't do anything that would raise your Infamy until you drop back down to 0 Infamy.

The PvE alternative is that you can run Smuggler Missions that give you the ability to prevent Infamy gain when you do the high-end Smuggler stuff, or reduce Infamy you've already gained, to avoid any BH entanglements. Either way, you are getting the high-end Smuggler stuff.

Essentially, the bonus doesn't come BECAUSE of the Infamy, the Infamy comes because of the bonus. Infamy is a drawback.

Oh.

So when I slice a mess of armor I gain bonuses. The more I slice the more I gain (up to 5%).

Unfortunately, I also gain infamy.

BUT- I can run missions to use- Let's say- Adv. Precision Knives - that will allow me to slice like crazy- gain the bonuses w/out gaining any infamy.

If I get too much infamy I get on the BH terms.

If the BH kills me- I cannot slice armor/weapons for a while-

If I evade the BHs long enough and don't do anything illegal (lay low) my Infamy goes down and I am removed from the terminals right?

If I kill the BH- nothing happens? Or my Infamy goes up-
Thus causing a higher bounty to go up?

Pretty much right. You don't gain more bonuses the more you slice. The bonus is a flat rate. Everytime you use the bonus, you gain Infamy. You can choose to use the bonus or not. (You can also use the Adv Precision Knife to slice with the bonus but not gain Infamy)

If you get too much Infamy, you get put on the terminals (Bountied). If you evade the Bounty by completing a Bounty Removal mission, your Infamy will drop to somewhere below the level that puts you on the terminals, and the Bounty is taken off the terminals and canceled. If you kill the Bounty Hunter, the Bounty is still on you. (You have to get Jabba his money, he doesn't stop sending Bounty Hunters until then).

If the BH kills you, you can't use the 5% bonus without the Adv Precision Knife, because your reputation is shot. Once you cool down to 0 Infamy, you can resume using the 5% bonus without the Adv. Knife.

(keep in mind the Adv Precision Knife is essentially a loot reward, so you'll have to run missions to keep a supply of them handy. It's faster but more dangerousto just take the Infamy increase)

Awesome.

Now, when do I originally get the bonus?

If it is at Master that is doubly cool because I then cannot Master Smuggler AND have novice Bounty Hunter- which of course makes everything extremely complex.

My argument still remains that it makes essentially anything our profession does aside from it's dirty fighting skills, a PvP punishable offense without consent. Whennovices get ganked from slicing containers or otherwise working on their skills, they should not be placed on a BH terminal.

It means unconsented PVP and the devs have said flat out that they don't want that, and will supposedly never implement that.

They and I, consider working for a faction saying that you are pvp willing. That and duels are the only ways a player is considered to consent to PvP at this time. Jedi are even forced to be rebel at the beginning for that very reason, so the player knows, beyond a doubt, that they are considered a pvp involved profession.

It's a well thought out idea, but we can't have unconsential pvp consequences.

there's plenty of unconsented pvp in the game.

How do you do that without choosing to go covert in a faction? Or accepting a duel? About the only one I know is the Jedi tef one.

well, not without joining a faction no. still, if it's been said that joining a faction without wanting to pvp is still in effect giving consent, i'd argue for a change in policy.

PvP is the GCW, the GCW is PvP, that is no disguising it, it is revealed to you the consequences straight out of the box and in the manual, there is no excuse.

Placing a covert detector next to me while I'm hunting is a low tactic, but the moment you work with a faction, you are taking a side and that has potential pvp consequences. It is entirely fair, and basically if you don't want to deal with PvP, don't join a PvP faction, remain neutral. TEF flags included, it's aiding the enemy of another, and thats fair. Pay attention and you wont get burned.

I don't see a change in how that works coming anytime soon and I happen to agree with it.

Does putting visibility when selling FP do anything? No,not really, because the player has to be overt to trade the faction in the first place. That and we aren't the only people who trade faction.

Caylin,

This kind of thing would only be implemented at Slicing 4, Spices 4 and Underworld 4 (for purchasing Faction). So it wouldn't ever interfere with the grind to master Smuggler.

And so this doesn't apply to just anything our profession does, only the high end stuff, and only under certain circumstances.

Perhaps an example would help:

At Slicing 4, we get an optional 5% slicing bonus. If we choose to use it, Infamy goes up. At Spices 4 we get access to one or more Infamy increasing Spices. If we choose to create/obtain and sell these, Infamy goes up.

I'm not saying we wouldn't be different from other professions. But that's sort of the point isn't it? Plus you would still be able to play as a 100% PvE Smuggler under what I described above.

I don't think I can emphasize the optional nature of this any more than I have, but the whole idea behind it is that Smugglers will have the option of choosing to engage in high-risk behavior that offers quick rewards.

If you prefer, we could just have a PvP switch that you have to throw (by "declaring" yourself Infamous) that unlocks the ability to choose the optional bonuses. But I think a more dynamic system would be to let us choose at specific moments and take on as much risk as we want.

Point is, Jedi don't overtly consent to the Bounty Hunter TEF. But they know when they use their abilities that they risk getting Bountied. Ours would be the same way, but instead of getting bountied for using our abilities, we'd get bountied for using optional bonuses too much and too often (because we're greedy).

It is different, and it is more complicated than joining a Faction and declaring yourself, or dueling somebody. But that's Bounty Hunters for you.
