Ok, first off I think that passage just kind of sums up the whole fight for our profession. Secondly, it's my favorite passage in the book. Somewhere in the midst of a drug and alcolhol binge, somewhere between when they started and when they ended, somewhere before the two of them backtracked through society and became savages, athing of beauty was created. Something that embodied a thing that everyone has felt at some point. Everyone has fought for something, and nothing says it better than a man in the depths of an ether binge. It's the most beautiful thing I've ever read.

Yeah, I feel slightly dirty for shamelessly ripping off old Hunter. He would stab me if he saw this... butI was bored at work and it somehow just seemed to fit. A good way to sum up the Non-Uberness of our class, which is what I love most about it. =)
As for the Movie vs. the book, the book is better, but I don't think I've ever seen a better book to movie translation than what Gilliam did and Depp was absolutley perfect as Hunter....
Now let me carve a little Z into your forehead...

I agree, they took only the tiniest liberties with the book, and Depp was fantastic. Much better than Bill Murray anyway 
I think my favorite part of the movie is when Depp is flashing back to The Matrix and says "There I was." He turns and sees a modern day Hunter S. Thompson. "Holy f*ck! There I am!"

Depp over Murray hands down. Books over Movies hands down as well. But the Depp movie is freakin amazing.
