Yeah, let's not drag the "CareBear" thing into this, first of all. I've been a smuggler since launch. I've been following the game for a lot longer. I been here. I been in the trenches. To date I could count the times I've fought other players on one hand (and two of those time was the same gank squad out hittin' faction levellers). And I'm for this change. I'm smuggler. That means I gotta get my hands dirty. And either keep my ride warmed up and ready, or a good crew with me (or sacrifice my R-2 droids).

But not everyone digs that. That's cool. They just are going to have to avoid the things that will get them on the bounty board. And if they don't like that, they need to find a new profession. We're criminals. Criminals get killed. /shrug

However, the TEF thing is overboard. How am I going to get ANY slicing done? What if I chose to slice in my house as a way to ensure protection? What? I gotta slice outside ALL the time? Eh. I don't like it. Put me on the bounty hunter board. I can slice my sefl off of it, hopefully. But don't automatically screw up my business. The bounty hunters will do that enough thanks.

Yes, to JTGAlpha you listen! Smuggler get their hands dirty. Sometimes you have to tread lightly to avoid getting a bounty placed on you. If you play your cards straight with your crimelord, you won't have to PvP. You won't have to.

But for all those not wanting a bounty on them (as beat as this topic is...) you are a smuggler, and given the Star Wars Universe theme of smugglers, a smuggler can either play it straight or cheat their boss. A Star Wars smuggler lives a life of risk. I suggest a slow decay in a players visibility so that smugglers who don't want to PvP can choose to "lay low" until their visibility has dropped below a certain point.

You are smugglers after all, and not choosing to have "risk" in your profession is completely contradictory to the theme of even being a smuggler, and I hope like hell that it is never coded that way into the game.

It looks like the devs are going to code a real galaxy with real consequences. I for one am pumped. For those supporting a "no-PvP" option for smuggler, I suggest you start taking a more moderate approach to the situation before you. It will help all smugglers if you do, and moreover help you get your "no-PvP" options more wholely implemented. I'm not kidding, supply an intelligent and middle ground approach. Start by realizing that you need to push for mechanics that allow for a smuggler to stay out of the danger zone if they get a little to close. You might also realize that if you choose the tactic of playing it straight and not stealing from your suppliers IS already a solution to your concerns.

We know that you don't want to PvP, but smothering the idea without approaching the situation from a moderate standpoint on the idea would do alot to kill amazing changes that are now taking place. It will affect you as well. This is an experiment in MMO's. A REAL LAW isgoing to be born. Don't spit on it, because that is what is going to give us our money! We make money circumventing the law. If you choose to discredit real consequences then there is no real law. Do what real people do when they are faced with actual PvP from real law officials, cover your ass and lay low. I pray the devs code a constant decay on visibility so you smuggler who don't want to PvP, actually get your dreams. Realize that it would not only make little sense but also not be Star Wars at all if a smuggler breaks all the risks he takes and doesn't get a bounty placed on him/her. It breaks the theme that we see in the movies, and that is the dream that we all want - to live in the movies and live the risky life that Han Solo and other smugglers had Hell I'm dying just to mess up every mission i get just to get a bounty on my head There are many, many others on our forums that feel the same way

Anyways, peace my non-PvP smuggs

Why do PvPers insist on on making others PvP. Players do not mind consequences, they just do not want to fight other players.

I do not mind bounties being placed on Smugglers but others do so stop trying to force it on them.

We aren't forcing anything on them. We didn't force them to become a Smuggler, We aren't going to force them to break the law. Everything they do is up to them.

I'm down with all the potential risks I would partake in as a smuggler using my skills. Slicing should be an illegal activity. I'm not too keen on the TEF system, since I think it is borked anyway.... For example, say i'm working in my workshop slicing some stuff. How is it that anyone knows what i'm doing, even if they are also in the shop? They would probably think I was just working on some equipment. The problem with the TEF is that it advertises my slicing/illegal activity that might not otherwise be obvious. I suggest that a skilled smuggler has a reduced chance of getting a TEF while slicing, and the more skill, the less likely he'll pop a TEF. Even as a novice, it shouldn't be 100% chance of getting one. Also, if we're going to get TEF's for slicing, I think the TEF system needs to be changed so you don't get booted out of a building when you get one. That was a workaround temporary fix in my mind anyway, it needs to be changed!!! It was implemented so people couldn't run into their houses to escape fights or pvp from inside their house to someone outside. This was a bad fix if you ask me. It should just that if you are in combat, you can't go into a private structure and also making your house private should take a few minutes, etc. There are better ways of preventing house combat griefing. Much better ways than booting people out of houses becuase they do a trade (with members of their own faction no less!) or heal someone!!

That's my 2 credits for the TEF system and smuggler skills. Should there be a risk to using our skills? Hell yeah! If it's the TEF system, should it be fixed before being applied to this? Hell yeah!

If I'm understanding GM's point, then the only really guaranteed way to end up on BH terminals is to deliberately and knowingly "bend" several major laws in SWG. I'm betting that it would be a straight up risk vs. reward model. All the high end, high payout smuggler missions (or jobs as I like to call em :wink will end up in the sort of tangible trouble that lands you on the terms. In other words, if you want the best possible payout from the smuggler profession, then you take the risks associated with it.

I would bet serious money that most of the more casual smugglers will avoid ending up on the terminals, simply because they have no desire to laugh in the face of the sort of odds the game (and other players) can throw at you. And even if you DO want some of the higher payouts without being hounded by your friednly neighborhood bounty hunter, simply play it smart. Don't skim too much off the top. Don't open fire everytime a snowflake looks in your direction. Don't scream in the starports like a bloody hare krishna. Honestly, if you just want to be a slice monkey and don't want the underworld flavor and risk of the life of a scoundrel, you really should ask yourself: Why are you a smuggler? I really don't mean to flame here, but smugglers are criminals. We aren't businessmen, we're bidnessmen.

I personally plan on trying to get the highest bounty on my head possible. To me, thats worth a lot more bragging than killing some random guy in PvP. I mean, don't you WANT to have a death mark on your head? I will likely get my @$$ handed to me numerous times, but I plan to make like the roadrunner more often than not. In regards to the instant TEF: What about the guy lighting up a doobie in his basement? The cops aren't instantly notified that he's doing something illegal. If we are slicing out in the open, it makes sense. But if we're in a cantina or our house, we should be safe to a degree.

Ok first off, I understand there are a few out there what want to be smugglers and therefore criminals but not be subject to any kind of risk. I completely disagree with this. If you chose to be a smuggler to compliment your crafting template, or just to do slices, then you are in the wrong profession. Smugglers are criminals. It should be difficult! I strongly support the automatic TEF when you use your first knife. A tef that is seen by every law-enforcement npc and every player except the player you're slicing for. Although if you want to give him the tef too, that's up to you. A smuggler can always just hold his goods till the tef is gone if he thinks the guy is going to gank him,
The point is, there are ways around the tefs, but you may actually have to think about it. You might even have to feel a bit like a criminal when doing this work. And less like a slicing monkey. You would have to discuss a meeting place, maybe even in your own smuggling house, but come on care-bears! Use your noggin! Is it so bad that they actually stop pussyfooting around professions making them so vanilla? Can the devs not finally implement some real content that causes you to feel a little nervous when performing an illegal action? Unless you just refuse to put any brains into this game at all, you can easily think of ways to slice stuff in an "underground" setting.

Now, i'll step off my soapbox and throw out some other changes i'd like to see.

1. No merchant can sell sliced goods or spices on his vendor. All illegal product can only be "moved" or sold by the individual. (now you've implemented actual smuggling into the game with this one change)
2. For the SideKick Idea, how about its done like a marriage deal. Where you could choose one other player of any profession to be your "sidekick" and he/she gets certain smuggler "enhancements" whenever he/she is grouped with you. The ability to hide illegal items. Some combat enhancements even, but only when grouped with you. You could see the uses for this with idea # 1 in effect.
3. On the smuggler missions, make them hard for Master Smugglers. Very hard with a high pay-off. That's why people get into the life of crime, to get large amounts of money fast. In other words, 20k missions won't cut it. No Master will do any of these because it isn't worth their time. With JTL I'm thinking this is a good set-up: You talk to a "contact" npc hanging around Coronet who tells you he needs you to deliver these 10 experimental rifle barrels to Jabba along with some scopes. Only the scopes will be delivered to you at this WP. The WP is located in space in the Naboo system. There you get the scopes delivered to you from another ship, but also spawning are some pirates that you will have to fight your way out of, or escape. Or they take your scopes and your barrels. Jabba puts a price on your head, and all BH's are notified.

Don't just make the content for the novices as a way to get xp. Give the masters stuff too please. What'dyathink?

I do not think you will find one single smuggler who does not agree that changes are needed... nor that we would not live with NPC (and I say NPC ONLY) law enforcement to "see" us and take action. We should be hiding in the cantina's and around the corners but your lack of an intelligent tag "care-bears" has nothing to do with this discussion.

Let me assume you like your playstyle, by your post I am going to assume you like PvP or a mix of PvP and PvE and enjoy that playstyle quite a bit. Am I right? (Going to assume you said yes) Well I respect that, I will even help with intelligent and helpful discusions to improve your playstyle.... as long as it does not impede on my playstyle. Do you respect my playstyle? Do you respect the fact that I simply do not care for PvP? I do not want to be force into unconsentual PvP solely because of your lack of my playstyle and unwilingness to respect others in a MMORPG.

Untill you can show respect for your fellow players I doubt anyone is going to take you serious.....

Just because someone does not like PvP does not make them not a serious Smuggler. You are mixing up the difference between content and playstyel and there is a huge difference. I am all for content, bring it on.. the more the better. Make me fear slicing in the cities, make me want to hide in the dark corners... make it so I can not sell on vendors! But do not tread on my playstyle! And that is exactly what unconsentual PvP will do. And that is something the devs have said from before beta they would NEVER do.

Cept you still missing a very big point, the devs have said from before beta that unconsentual pvp would not be forced upon the players. And as only one dev has only "suggested" the "visibility" option and the track record has clearly shown that they have yet to put in any player bounties other then Jedi's I am not all that worried that this will get past the suits that actualy run the game.

Remember they are the ones that make the final decisions and they, so far have made it pretty clear that unconsentual pvp is banned in swg.

Let me say again, I am all for content. I am all for NPC Bounties, hell I am all for a squad of NPC Imps lead by a NPC BH... I am not afraid of dying, I am not afriad of combat.... I am not afraid of PvP, it is just not my playstyle and I also pay to play this game. I said it before and will say it again... you need to respect both sides if you are going to play a MMORPG.

The only way an "instant TEF" should be imposed is if you're stupid enough to slice in front of a Stormtrooper. There's no way that by simply cutting one wire you should be automatically flagged to every n00b with a blaster in a 300m radius.

In my personal opinion, if you get scanned for contraband, and you're on spice (up or down)you should get caught. If you're slicing a terminal or something and a Stormtrooper is within oh, say 40m radius and in line of sight (i.e. not through a wall) you should get caught. But not to any joe-shmoe in Coronet that wants to play cops and robbers while he's buffed up the wazoo, wearing 90% composite armor and carryinga Krayt-Jawa Ion Riflethat weall know is sliced.

I'm all for stiffer penelties, but this is overboard.

There is NO unconsentual PvP. It's not like you get caught once and the Bounty Hunters descend up on you. You have time to evaluate your level (through us) and not use contraband until the heat dies down, and if you want, REMOVE yourself from the Bounty Hunting terminals (through us). Two ways right there to NOT get into PvP and still use contraband.

As for smugglers? Don't skim the missions. Do them just like your told, and no PvP will come your way. It's that easy.

Or the easier way is too keep PvE and PvP seperate so both sides are respected equally... or you do not like to respect all playstyles?
