this is an old argument, but every once in awhile you have to drag out the common sense example for the folks who still don't want to choose their slice:
let's see, we're technically skilled enough to modify an advanced piece of equipment like a firearm, yet we have no idea what it is we're modifying? yeah that makes complete sense...i guess the local auto mechanic is good enough to change the oil in your car, but when he starts working, there's a 50/50 shot he's going to change your oil or rotate your tires.../rolleyes...

While the argument makes some sense..the local machanic isn't exactly "improving" on the design of you car rather than performing regular matiinence. Slices are however improving on a design that is supposed to be " regulated" by imperial law. Hence the illegal part of slicing. Reading the slicing screen when it comes up gives me the impression that you bypass certain sercuity measures that regulate the weapon. So while the smuggler may have a specific effect in mind, it wouldn't always (or ever in some cases lol) come out how the smuggler wants it. Besides..some of these legendary loot drops+ chosen slice = crazy

that's true, my mechanic example wasn't a great one...however, if 'slicing' as it is defined in swg, is meant to be a potluck roll that you have no control over, why not let everyone have the skill?...surely your average marksman has enough knowledge of his weapon to jury-rig it for more damage...a slicer is basically like a hacker, at least in the star wars EU...slicers sliced data terminals, news nets, etc, not weapons and armor...yet another example of the good folks designing this game not having any clue about the universe they were attempting to portray...my problem, and yes i know i'm in the minority, is that i want smuggling, slicing, and everything else in the game to conform to roleplay standards, and star wars roleplay standards while we're at it...not being able to pick your slice is purely a function of game-balance, and is very clumsy, both in terms of that balance (an uber looted weapon can still get a 34% damage slice, thus unbalancing things for everyone that doesn't have it), and in terms of being faithful to established star wars lore...

most of my slices are speed anywhere from 25 to 35 rare to go higher as for damage lol average is at 15 percent evey 20 slices armor i get low 25 to 35 for increase in base eff and 15 to 25 for reduction of incumberances and again rarely anything above 35

Well, I would say it is in the hands of the smugglers. If not select the attribute, then a higher set range, say 20 to 50 would be appropriate IMHO.

Aww I got a 1 star on my earlier post.
Anyways, the original poster should know having a weaponsmith and a smuggler that there are always risks and it is sad that weaponsmiths work hard to get some thing a couple of points higher stat wise just to have a smuggler come and hope on a random act to finish it off.
Maybe they should just get rid of slicing alltogether except for master smugglers only. Either that or make an interface like there is for image designers.

Aww, poor Gren..
Didn't you know I'm the only smuggler on Gorath that can get those awsome 35% damage slices?
I think the devs punish those people who have a WS and a smuggler
But I know what you mean.. I have sliced someone elses Krayted flamethrower for 35% damage before... but most of my own stuff gets crap sliced
Although, I've been lucky on my hot ticket items.. 27% damage on my DE.... 29% damage on my EE3 for my MBH... well, it took 3 of them to get that nice damage slice.. but I got it... want to buy it?

Had a Krayt T21 made a few weeks ago with the best tissues I've gotten in an 11 set (73, -.711) - 15% speed slice.
I have a rifle with lower ham, more damage and just a little slower that's better then this, just a wasted rifle now.

If they got rid of speed capping, it wouldn't be such a problem because you would always be doing good for the player. Its the formula for calculating speed is ridiculous anyways.

Seems bad luck in slices seems to come in runs for me - good luck also.
Guy brings me 5 Helmets, 75 Electricity, 40% Stun, 65% Base - pleading for at least 1 35% eff slice so he can anti decay it. 5 enc slices on the trot - he spenta mil on those helmets. I felt bad and only charged him 10k for all 5 slices.
Another guys brings me 4 rifles - all krayt Enhanced, 31% Damage, 30% Damage, 25% Damage and 28%Damage - needless to say he tipped me
