Thread: I got robbed by a smuggler
Sluggy,
I wouldn't agree with being able to slice in the trade window. Then the tables are turned on us, a dishonest person can put their weapon in the trade window, have us slice it, then cancel out the trade without paying. When we have their guns, at least we have some collateral that guarantees us they will pay.

That's why we need to be able to slice in the trade window.
As Zzor said. Doing this allows us, the Smugglers, to get ripped off. We hold their weapon, we have a deposit that we'll be paid. No payment, no gun returned.
The honest ones of us far outweigh the thieves who are just scamming people. I've only heard of one or two scammers out of a good few hundred Smugglers.

If you click "ok" and they remove the credits, your "ok" box is unchecked. The slice will take effect after the trade is complete. If the trade does not go through after you've sliced, you've lost the upgrade kit, but still earned the experience, and the weapon has been unchanged (or even better - slice failed).
The above is not the way things are currently, just an illustration as to what could happen with a bit of programming.

The other thing with this kind of setup though is it promotes mistrust.
One thing that's always been an issue in MMOG's is Trust. Do you trust that player with your item? etc.
SW:G seems to be overcoming this and allowing us to be less cautious and less wary of letting others handle our goods.
One prime example of this is Slicing. We are being Trusted with their items.
Another is an interaction with my weapon supplier. She trusted me on my first order. I explained i had no credits on me, and would she accept a tip from the bank or would she prefer i ran to the bank to get them for her first to use in the trade window.
She said a tip was fine. Even handed me the weapons first. Then i tipped her. I should've done it the other way around, but either way, the trust was there. This is something I personally have really noticed in this game. Trust is a good thing. Let's encourage it and promote it, not ruin it by allowing slicing to be done in trade windows, etc.
SOE could borrow something from Mythic for this to make it more secure. You put the item on the ground and since it is yours only can pick it up, but the smuggler can click on it and have the option to slice it. Another option would be to make items available for slicing from the trade window. Just put it up for trade with the smuggler, the smuggler clicks on it and the radial menu shows the option to slice. Could even include a confirmation in the trade that you agree to have your item sliced.
The idea is to improve the acceptance of having items sliced so that smugglers have a greater chance to use this skill. Added benefit would be fewer cases of this happening and fewer CSR troubles.
Well, I think then the best way to make this work is using the trade window as follows:
You slice
He pays
Both press OK
If both do not, slice is canceled with the whole trade. This is sorta what worked in DAoC for item enchantment and it turned out nicely.
If the trade window can't be modified that heavily, then a new window involving repairs/slicing should be implemented. Clicking on a crafter/smuggler should show "ask for repairs" option, for exemple.
I just wanted to say I'm glad that this thread got attention my thread on Starsider about this got buried because ever othr post on Starsider is someone complaining about the server being down.
Also I do not hate the smuggler profession I think it is a cool profession but because of this experience I will only use the smugglers in my PA and the one I first started using early on because I'm afraid "paranoid" that this will happen again. I
Also I posted this here because now with the player representatives asking for suggestions I think that a new way to slcie weapons could be a suggestion to the devs.
Thanks again for all your positive feedback.
Keep it the way it is... /report anyone who griefs. They are in violation.
It sucks to get screwed over... but sometimes you have to just risk it.
Now, I'm a girl- in the game and in real life, and I'm going smuggler. If that person has caused me to lose business before I can even start- she better watch out! Han Solo is my ideal- the sexiest, most macho, most charming, crafty and quick guy in the univers- and he has INTEGRITY! He did not cheat you- he was cheating the system. And woo-hoo for that! A smuggler is first a business man (or in my case a woman), and honesty in business is extremely important.
Please dont judge all smuggles by this one individual, and dont judge all female players buy that either. I am just as honest and hardworking as any guy going for smuggler!
Next, I think they should put slice on the radial menu, like so: the person with the weapons has it equipped, the smuggler uses radial menu, selecting slice. A drop down list of container or weapon would be necessary. I think something along those lines wold be helpful. I am naturally suspicious of others, and I dont like to hand over my goods to people I don't know.
Good Luck Everyone!

Pardon me for playing devil's advocate, but...they're smugglers. Smugglers are supposed to be disreputable people. They're reputation isn't supposed to be "fair and honest." I mean, it's not like smuggling's a legitamate business. Yeah, what that person did was wrong, but...what do you expect from a drug dealer?

Smugglers are supposed to smuggle not steal from other player characters. At least thats how I feel about it.
I feel for you but please dont judge all smugglers bad or the class as bad becuaseof one bad egg. I really dont think there is going to be a major change in the way slicing occurs at least as far as how the weapons are transferedSo I would make friends with a reputable smuggler if I were you.

and exactly what are we supposed to smuggle? drugs? they're not banned from cities or from having them.
so far, the point of a smuggler is to slice weapons and armor.
