Thread: Tuesday Tip

I'm a bit skeptical about the gameplay in that one. It doesn't look like a first person shooter, which is ok, BUT It looks more like an Age of Empires™ type of gameplay, which can get boring.
I'm gonna stop posting about it after this (and I only post it because of overexcitement about the game lol), but yeah it is an RTS, or real time strategy, type game. And the guys at Petroglyph acknowledged some of the flaws of the RTS genre, and have taken strides to improve it in Empire at War. For example, they're sure that smart gamers will figure out what the 'alpha unit' of each side is and then win games easily, but there will be certain strategic disadvantages of doing so. Other factions that exist in star wars (bothan spynet being primeexample because of developer mention, but it won't surprise me if more are put in) will also be in the gameand serve a purpose in the Galactic Civil War, although you won't be able to play them.
Anyway, to validate this post and line of thought, I'm gonna step back to SWG for a moment -it's my real (and only) hope that SWG catches up to Empire at War in terms of how Star Warsy the game feels. I could very easily see some of the Empire footage and mentally picture SWG toons in their place, duking it out in an actual war effort. I guess we'll see if the next expansion does just that, but overall I am not overly optimistic. Again, we'll see.
Bottom line, SWG should be a MMOG version of Empire at War, not Star Wars in an EverQuest 2 or World of Warcraft setting.
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagree

LA is as responsible, if not more responsible, than SOE. They own the license. They approve all ideas. They allow or restrict everything that goes on in this game. If they wanted better, they could have better.
Even Lucas is guilty in this one (I know blasphemy) be it through indifference or ignorance.
That's all probably true, but it ignores one important fact:
Lucas Arts doesn't write the code. EVERY bug, EVERY feature that breaks old features, EVERY failed hotfix is solely and entirely the fault of SOE. LucasArts simply neglects the game, but SOE is the negligent party in the end.
I'm not saying that SOE hasn't done some pretty crappy programming, I'm saying to you think about this:1. Who insisted that the game be pushed out of beta before it was ready because of an advertised date?2. Who insisted that the CU be pushed out before they wanted to because of the ROTW/Ep3 tie in?3. Who approves a schedule, and once that schedule is set, damn the torpedoes, something's going to be put out?4. Who approves how, when, and what content is released to the game?Every publish is approved. Once it's approved, it's hard to change it. From a QA standpoint, that's all on SOE. From the others, I put that all on LA.There's a reason there haven't been too many big content upgrades like the warren, corvette, and DWB for awhile. These guys are gonna milk whatever they can out of this game now by only releasing new content (other than very short quests) through expansions. Who's decision do you think that is? I say it's the publisher. They're both guilty as hell, and dumb as hell since they still haven't learned. Thething about it all is that I want people to remember that LA's hands are just as dirty in all of this. So keep that in mind next time LA is putting out a new title. I for one am done with both of those companies once I'm done with this game.(edited to add some more thoughts)Message Edited by SmugglinZane on 08-11-2005 12:54 PM
dont forget who is forcing them to make jedi easier and easier to obtain so they can sell more new copies of SWG. LA has a one trick pony - jedi. Some of their games arent even jedi games and STILL they have to throw the jedi word around like piloting a JEDI starfighter ( a flight sim game is a flight sim game, just because that ship is issued to a jedi doesnt make it any different really than any other pilot flying it, afterall I am not a real jedi and how I handle a joystick is the way a non-jedi handles the joystick, there is no super-dodging AI to make up for my lack of jedi-ness). Sure SOE is leaving bugs in the game but only because ALL CODE has to get LA approval. EQ2 bugs get fixed very fast.
Actually Gypsia I'm referring to something a dev said as recent as FanFest. We were supposed to be even more finished than CH, and yet their system went in and ours didn't. I'm not hating on the CH changes or the CHs, I'm just saying that we went from being almost finished except for some dialogue to postponed again.
If you'll not the post I made in response to Tiggs, I pointed out that just because she didn't say it or didn't do it, doesn't mean it's not happening.

just like the slicing minigame that in a nutshel describes the EQ2 crafting system? That too was almost done. How is picking a selection from a menu any kind of game at all? Even before 'Plan B' it was still just menu selection. Containers and terminals dont even have selections, once you say slice its over. Someone really think it took them months to do that???

yeah that Slicing mini-game that everyone kept saying was JUST like the EQ2 crafting system really sounded like fun!
it's too bad they didn't go with that.
i think many of the recently cancelled veteran Smugglers would not be cancelled if that went in, instead of "Plan B".
not that we wouldn't be pissed about still not being able to Smuggle, just that we'd actually have something fun to do.

We have many un-announced plans that one day soon will be public knowledge. Until we receive the go-ahead nothing will be said, sorry.
Not to be tooo cynical here but if your un-announced plans include another expansion pack for SOE to line its pockets while professions in this game, such as my Smuggler brethren here, still suffer with the same bugs and lack of content that has been promised again and again.
Of course Tiggs is in the line of fire. She is the director of community relations! Its her job to deal with us. Its shockingly funny when people thank her for responding, its her job!!!!

Dear Smugglers,
I just wanted to stop by and apologize to anyone who thought the Tuesday Tip was meant as an insult. I certainlydidn't want itto be taken that way.
I'm also sorry I couldn't offer this olive branch early, but I've been out ill for a couple of days.

J/K, TH. Did you actually read this whole thread? That would take a substantial part of your day right there. Regardless, it's nice to see you posting in here... it's a response to us and we appreciate that.
I've read most of it and I'll be finish it up throughout the day (as long threads go...)
