Thread: Depending On Smugglers
Gabe, an honest question.
Are you so dense that you cannot actually see the argument? Or are you just so stubborn that only your way is the correct way?
If you honestly believe your argument then come up with an actually thought out post that has logical reasoning, and you just might stand a chance. Until then, stay the hell out of our forum.

This doesn't answer my concern at all. And there are other more constructive ways to implement contraband, I suggest pushing for them.
StGabe.
Part of the problem here is that other professions have taken our content for granted. Everyone expects their weapons to have 33% slicing improvements, and limiting that threatens their basic balance. It's an original design mistake that has no easy solution. The maglock thing was pure lunacy, and I don't presume to understand the insanity behind it. I don't think that 'smuggler-kits' are the answer, though. Unless of course you are willing to provide 'swordsman-kits' that we can use when stuck in melee!
A large part of what Gabe is saying (if I read it correctly) is that any game system that severely curtails general gameplay unless you have the right person with you is un-fun, and I agree. If I can't find a dancer to heal my BF, it doesn't prevent me from doing anything. This is a good system. If I can't go from Endor to Naboo without a smuggler, this is a bad system.
The trick with a contraband system is making it workable. If spice or sliced items become too costly to use/transport, it's not going to increase the utility of smugglers, it's going to reduce the demand for these items, as they just won't be worth the hassle.
Lastly, to StGabe, I don't agree with everything you've written, but that's the point of discourse, isn't it? You deserve major props for addressing the replies you've gotten, espcially the knuckleheads who have nothing more cogent to say than "get the hell out of my forum". A disgrace to the civilized rogue they are, and scarce worth the time it takes to mention them.
Except that NO ONE's said that you should always have a smuggler with you. We don't want that either, Bhodi. I don't wanna follow Gabe around any more than he wants me to follow him. HOWEVER I don't see why this means that he should be able to slice mag-sealed containers without me. I slice locked containers. Novices ONLY can advance by slicing locked containers. Why should he get to slice them?
I don't understand why slicing and spices can't be illegal. They can be illegal and he can still not need me to follow him around to use them. He can roll his dice and take his chances with getting caught...or he can NOT USE THEM. All WE want is for the penalties to matter, and for players to WANT us to smuggle goods for them. I don't have to follow them around and hold their hand every starport, nor do they get to smuggle illegal goods. This is a very simple logical chain...
IF smuggling is going to mean anything THEN things have to be illegal AND people have to want to avoid the penalites. IF. THEN. AND. It's that simple. And NO spice and slice doesn't get a pass on that because he likes to use them. You do not have to use spice and slices. You DO NOT HAVE TO. Hell I"m a smuggler and I rarely use them. I have a sliced gun. That's it. That's all the contraband on my person for personal use. I get along just fine.
This thread is a great example of why I envy those who are not correspondents.
I'm going to just...sit over here in this corner. Counting to ten...thousand. Hopefully it will be enough.

I agree 100%. I disturbs me intensely that "contraband" is freely posted on the bazaar, and that illegal modifcations are performed in front of the galaxy's busiest starports in plain site. A smuggler should be a conduit to contraband, the acquisition of which is either impossible or of prohibitive cost to the non-smuggler. Contraband is not "needed", it is desired because it adds a benefit, and the benefit should come with a cost.
I do agree with StGabe, however, that the addition of smuggler content which causes a general inconvenience to the non-smuggler is not only not fun for the non-smuggler, but also not likely to be implemented by the devs. His initial post seemed to be a reasonable suggestion that we (smugglers) focus on ideas for content that allow us to provide benefits to players, rather than focus on us helping them avoid penalties. This is a subtle distinction that has profound effects in-game.

Paying for things they have access to and I do not, trading them things that I earn as a swordsman, wanting them in a group as a bonus and as a useful member in and of themselves and not as a workaround to something that is fundamentally unfun, etc.
StGabe.
Herein lies the problem--Smugglers are nothing more than a support class to St. Gabe (and other combatants), at least judging by the tone and content of his posts. We exist to improve his gameplay, but not necessarily have any of our own. Now, if we happen to enjoy some things in the game while with him (or the other combatants), then that's fine, but otherwise we need to go play our Smuggler mini-game and leave the general population alone.
That's unacceptable to me, as it is every one that has heard the call of the underworld.
And Bohdi, while I initially respected Gabe's attempts at broaching a pertinent and touchy subject, his inability to even acknowledge our profession as a necessary and worthwhile contributor to the world of SWG as well as his pejorative responses to every poster have taken that respect from him.
