I don't have much of a problem with a half-solution here.
If it happens that C never comes around, I wll be happier with A than I ever would with B as a Smuggler.
Yet again I'll stress it is always easier to argue for convenience rather than restrictions. The opportunity to do so *rarely* happens and just as rarely will that player base accept it.

I undertand that this is a Smuggler forum and not a Merchant one, and that asking for convenience is easier ... and yes as a smuggler if nothing else were going to be an option I'd prefer A over B ... but that doesnt mean it's a great solution...it just means that it is ONE PROFESSIONS's lesser of two evils.
What I do not understand is the reluctance to say "As step one in a larger solution..." as a preamble to this evaluation to the DEVs. If "What [we] answer may very well affect what smuggling is in the future as to what the status quo on illegal items will be." ... don't we want to make our answer the most correct and word it very carefully?
Yes, as a smuggler, A is better than B. Does that make it better for the overall game? Maybe, maybe not. What a smuggler (no matter how loved) is willing to live with is not necisarily healthy for all professions involved.
Anyway, if we're asking for A we should at least be able to say "As a first step in a larger solution" otherwise we're in danger of mis-representing the REAL DESIRE -- which is a workable long term solution that wont have 80% of the playerbase screaming about it 4 months later.
Hmm you're making it sound like merchants only deal in sliced goods. Even if that were the case, isn't this a problem? Seriously, this stuff is supposed to be illegal now. In reality the impact of this change would be very minimal to all other professions compared to ours'. A very small portion of a merchant's income is due to selling sliced goods.
Lets take another look at this though. Say we go with B. We will likely never really have the opportunity to change it again. If we go with A and its a pain in the arse, it'd be fairly simple to undo. There really is no down side to A at all.

Hmm you're making it sound like merchants only deal in sliced goods. No, I'm just saying they will hate it if A is the end-all-be-all solution we propose ... and they will ... and eventually so will we because, truely, it's not a complete answer. Even if that were the case, isn't this a problem? Seriously, this stuff is supposed to be illegal now. In reality the impact of this change would be very minimal to all other professions compared to ours'. Actually its a massive freaking change to the Merchant profession. A very small portion of a merchant's income is due to selling sliced goods. You are apparently talking to chefs and Doctors. Talk to a weaponsmith or an armorsmith. 90-98% of the weaponsmiths vendor sales are likely sliced (have a master weaponsmith alt I have well over a years worth of sales data in a spreadsheet somewhere to confirm this if I must.)
Lets take another look at this though. Say we go with B. We will likely never really have the opportunity to change it again. Again... WHO IS TELLING YOU THIS!? If this is the case then THAT is what we need to be worried about...we have a revamp that is supposed to be coming up. Why are we getting the message "we have one chance to pick one of 2 extremes and we need to pretend that we may never get another update" ... is our revamp not happening now? If we go with A and its a pain in the arse, it'd be fairly simple to undo. There really is no down side to A at all. Maybe not for you but there are downsides to other professions and that is ASKING for a change that will not be a viable long term solution. The one thing that there is clearly no down side at all to doing is qualifying this option A with the words "As step one in a larger solution..."
