I use a dunelizard with 2 crafted mining lasers and a large hold. I'm only a pilot lvl 3323 as I write this, but I have found certain asteroids in the tougher systems that don't have all the enemies flying around you all the time. The 2lasershave a max damage of 950, which are more than enough to take out up to lvl 4 craft.A good fast engine and booster alsohelp to get away if not I wasn't aware of the mining quests so just bought the lasers and hold and got on with mining.

Another trick I use which maybe helpful,is to "land" on the asteroid and create a waypoint, that way I can find it quickly after chasing all the little rocks around the sky. As the asteroid re=spawns in the same spot, its there for the next time I return. I know where the "safer" rocks are to mine.

The dunelizard with a large "hold" can store 1550 units btw. This maybe of some use to you I hope

Asteroids are listed on the POI tab of your datapad, you can activate them when you enter the system (as of my last check they don't show in Kessel, but everywhere else does)

Any starfighter (POB/Y-8 get bigger holds, but still aren't great for mining)with the current bugged crafting a large hold caps at 1550, we are waiting on a fix to make bigger holds.

Im haviong a terrible time. I tried installing a Lvl III mining laser on my Nova Courier, put a 3500 un9t Cargo hold on it and attempted to mine from the bottom turret on a Methane Asteroid, (all of them infcat. I also tried to mine the acidics too. Now this same Laser works fine from mt Firespray (998(max) cargo hold) but it wont work from the turret of my Nova. Is there any reason why this would be happening? Is it limited to only smaller craft. If so, that really messsed up. I can only hold 998 in my Firespray cargo hold and that makes for way too many trips. Any help?

Great guide.

I use the following bindings:

Fire mining laser weapon group - to JOYB3

Toggle Tractor Beam - to JOYB4

FollowAsteroid Macro - to JOYB2

The follow asteroid macro is simple and works well:

/target asteroid

/follow

What this means is, I break up the medium asteroid with the mining laser, then toggle the tractor beam on, and engage the follow macro. When the asteroid is brought in, the autopilot disengages, so I know to hit the Follow Macro button again to acquire a new asteroid target and bring it in. Much, much faster than manual targeting and tractoring. For best results, be very close to the medium asteroid when it blows, and use a ship with fast YPR turn rates.

Don't know where you want this info Red butI have figured out a system for mining with a 2+ weapon ship, Break off one chunk with a mining laser (easiest with a mk3) and activate tractor beam, target the chunk and hit follow. when your ship has dropped speed and is following the rock start blasting, you can pick up most or even all of the smaller chunks instantly, If you kill the throttle when it explodes, you can easily pivot to grab the 1-2 you missed, On carbonaceous(sp) I get 100-150 units for each Chunkand usually am less than 600m from the big asteroid. Also if you auto pilot to smalll asteroid chunks with the tractor they fly past much less frequently. Using these methods I can fill a med cargo hold (1000 units) in 10 min. using a mk3 laser, a tractor beam and a regular blaster for bandits on my Kimo.

You are most likely encountering one of the two problems already discussed in this thread.

1)The asteroid has already spawned all the chunks it's going to spawn. Target the asteroid and do a /examine. If its current condition is about 1/3rd or less of its maximum condition, it's probably not going to spawn any more medium chunks. Your options are to either sit there and grind the thing down to 0 condition, which will destroy it and force it to respawn, or to go to another asteroid. (Note: If you're using the "free" mining laser Thom Steele gave you, grinding it down to 0 condition will take a very long time. A crafted Class 3 mining laser with Quick Shot upgrade can blast that thing into bits very quickly.)

2)The asteroid has crept too close to the edge of space. (One of its coordinates is 8000 or -8000.) In this case no amount of blasting will do anything. The asteroid typically respawns at its proper place after a while, but if you're impatient, you're probably better off jumping over to another asteroid.

I find myself using all 3 slots on my x-wing to use mining lasers. If asteroid bandits spawn, i am able to fend them off simply with my mining lasers

The second weapon slot (the gunner's) on a Y-wing can hold a tractor beam that the pilot controls, which allows efficient 1-person mining for new alliance pilots.

Since pub 21 a day ago, the readout on my cargo hold (when i shoot a chunk and add material to my cargo hold) only shows the top half of the number. No matter what I move around, I still can't see all the numbers. Is anyone else having this problem?
