I'm still a n00b at this space stuff but why isnt anyone talking about reverse engineered components? I thought I had read that reverse engineering looted components could make them better, is that correct? If so, are shipwrights doing this and reselling these? Is it profitable? I am just surprised to read so little about it other than the posts discussing RE'ing components to get firespray fragments. So, whats the deal with this aspect of shipwrighting?

I've come up with some pretty good parts at level three, especially when you find a piece with super low mass, and then some other crappy stats.
[[That is a Reserved Name]] Whats the word on naming?
I can't seem to come up with any name the system finds acceptible. Is there a way to know which 'brand name' the RE'd part is going to carry?
I'd like to be able to distinguish reverse engineered parts in my inventory, and eventually my vendor, without having to examine them all.
The only rename I've seen stick, was named *Mark*. Another SW had resold them on the bazaar, as their mark level.

I'm pretty new to SW so havent done a lot of RE'ing but if i try to RE 1 lvl1 component i get an error message saying incorrect amount of items (or words to that effect). Is it not possible to use just 1 item (as long as its lvl1)? I'm sure ive done it before. Any ideas?

Make sure the RE level is 1 and not the equipment level. I have RE'd level 7 equipment that is Level 1 reverse engineering level.

Are you sure that's not the bug that truncates a component's name when it comes out of a Chassis?

There was some change in how it was done from how first started but in general the RE will increase the average of all parts combined by a % usualy higher when you are doing higher level stuff. The level 1 and 2 stuff is so common and not going to get too many super results when you Re. Myself I tend to drop the low level RE items on vendors to help out the fledgling pilots who want and need parts since many SW dont keep huge stocks of the cert level 1-4 parts. The higher stuff thoght look at a bit close and adjust. Also as for naming I tend to keep the same name just for flavor since the rename is so flakey but you can tell if someting has been RE'ed by fact that has no RE level on it once you do it.

The few components I've RE'd so far I've used a simple naming convention. Just "RE Engine Lvl I." Seems to me looking at the RE level in the stats window is something most people will miss so I want them the know right off the bat this is an RE'd component..

I find the RE market to be very good I sell them for just under what I make parts of the same level for and as there is no real cost to me for the components themselves it is mosly just profit for me. I sell out of just about everything I put on the vendor right now.
I do agree that there is an art to Reverse engineering for the best results not just combining random parts.

Sorry for the newb question, but do you really have to find 10 of the esxact same thing to RE??
Depends on the lvl
You need 3 parts with a reverse engineering lvl of 3
You need4 parts with a reverse engineering lvl of 4
And so on
They must also all be the same type, like all reactors or all engines.
More specifically, they all need to be the same reverse engineering level.

So... I'm noob shipwright-1000, OMG I can use the same component of that level of engineering, (lets say 3) but they dont have to be identical compnents?? So, I can combine say surosub, mandor, and krut, all RE level 3 engines, and they will RE???
So, I dont need 3 identical loots with the same name, just the same component and RE level correct?? Damn I noob.
Correct

I have found that it won't accept numbers like 1, 2, 6 etc.
I have been nameing my re'd parts as PMTRE Engine Mark I. My normal parts are named PMT Engine Mark I. The RE lets me know it is re'd.
As far as being useful, I have been buying loot parts (even lvl 1) reing them and loading them on my vendor. This way I have a good assortment of low level components without having to use up quality resources.

Wrong. I have been doing Reverse Engineering all weekend. You need the exact same name or the tool won't accept it.
DOH!! I was just getting all revved up and ready to RE things. Needing the exact same name makes no sense to me. Doggone it SOE, we are Engineers. We CAN make the circular thingy from Crapstar Inc. fit into the smaller hexagonal opening of the CompaqStar 47 Demodulator! That is what we do!
