Thread: Reverse engineered components

I'm still a n00b at this space stuff but why isnt anyone talking about reverse engineered components? I thought I had read that reverse engineering looted components could make them better, is that correct? If so, are shipwrights doing this and reselling these? Is it profitable? I am just surprised to read so little about it other than the posts discussing RE'ing components to get firespray fragments. So, whats the deal with this aspect of shipwrighting?
Just my opinion here and your mileage may vary... ![]()
Reverse engineering will be a great thing for guilds and roleplay groups etc. If your buddies are all pilots and happy to drop you off all the lot parts they get from space, quite a bit of fun can be had by being the 'engineer' for your team.
Currently, however, most (many? Some?) of us are playing as shipwrights. We're working towards mastery or profit and I think that RE offers very little return on investment right now. There are so many parts and so many varieties and players are keeping many of their loots for friends or selling them for stupid prices - so to actually go around and find 5 Bullcrappy Industries Inverted Fartometers is just a pain in the butt when you can whip out a TIE bomber and make 500k etc.
So time will come when folks take this part of the game up as a niche market - but I suspect that it was added and designed to make interplay between small gaming groups of pilots with their engineer more engaging than it was added and designed as a mechanism towards providing an ongoing market comodity.
But I'm sure someone will passionately disagree, flame me and explain why I should not be allowed to have an account ![]()

Consider yourself flamed and shuned for posting... ![]()
Actually, I have tried to make a point of doing some reverse engineering now that I hit master SW, I have had some very very good resluts.
Here is the trick, for example lvl 2 capacitor.
I had one looted capacitor with very high energy storage but not very good regen rate and pretty high mass.
I had another capacitor with a good regen and super low mass.
Reverse Engineer and I have a capacitor with super low mass, good regen and super high energy storage.
Here is what I want to know, how many farads is a capacitor with an energo storage of 1000 ![]()
I think reverse engineering is going to be a very usefull thing to do and even more so on high end parts.
But do you think these will really take off as a market item? I guess I just see this as more of a group of guys in a guild and their SW sort of thing than I do "BillyBob's Reversed Engineer Doohads" in the short term - I'm sure we will see some of that in the longer term though.
Wouldnt such an item be worth a lot of money?

Sorry for the newb question, but do you really have to find 10 of the esxact same thing to RE??

Isnt there the possibility of reverse engineering a component and coming up with something truly spectacular?

Yes, look at my example, I think we will see some VERY VERY nice parts. Think with 9 lvl 9 engines, each one has super high stats in one area. Combine them, you get one part with super high stats in all areas.
I have made RE parts that can not come anywere near crafting. But I think there will be a good balance between the two.
The poor imperials are going to need RE parts in a bad way to outfit those tiny Tie ships.
So, I dont need 3 identical loots with the same name, just the same component and RE level correct?? Damn I noob.

So... I'm noob shipwright-1000, OMG I can use the same component of that level of engineering, (lets say 3) but they dont have to be identical compnents?? So, I can combine say surosub, mandor, and krut, all RE level 3 engines, and they will RE???

Exactly correct. If you don't rename the final item ( after REing, it'll pick one of the names and use that in the final name.

5 stars for you. I was looking to the answer to that exact question myself.
[[That is a Reserved Name]] Whats the word on naming?
I can't seem to come up with any name the system finds acceptible. Is there a way to know which 'brand name' the RE'd part is going to carry?
I'd like to be able to distinguish reverse engineered parts in my inventory, and eventually my vendor, without having to examine them all.
