Imagine when a rich strike of asteroid resources spawns...the skies will be filled with mining ships. That will be a sight to see.

Squid, I dunno about you, but I plan on using a mining ship to make phenomenal amounts of credits. I don't NEED to build them to make money off them.

Space mining sounds really cool, but I'm afraid it will enable yet another form of griefing. Imagine, you take the time and trouble to fight off pirates, blast an asteroid, then blast the chunks into smaller pieces...then some ahole swoops in and tractors away all the ore.
Another aspect that bothers me is that there will be NPC vendors buying the space resources. I realize why they did it (to make space mining competitive with space looting), but it still represents a form of direct interference in the resource markets of the game. It creates a "floor" for space resource prices, rather than letting market conditions determine the value of resources. If an NPC will pay 25 cpu for a resource, sure as hell no one will sell it for less than that on the open market--whether the resource is worth it or not.
IMO, NPC resource vendorsaren't even necessary...players will dictate which space resources are in demand, and what they are willing to pay for them. Then other players can decide if the going rate is worth their time to mine it.
Overall though, I like the idea of space mining, and the new equipment and mining ship. I look forward to trying it.

So is that ship a quest reward or player-crafted?

"Interested space miners may be given the opportunity to "unofficially" get a hold on some second rate equipment to help out the CEC while they work through tough times."
It sounds as if the ship will be both a quest reward and craftable, but the quest reward will be "second rate equipment" and not as good as the crafted version. If that's the case, sounds like a fair deal to me.

It's a quest reward. I'll have to double check if it's a deed or a schematic.

Valid concern regarding resources, EdOWar. But think of real world economics - there are certain resources which have, at various points in time, had prices fixed in order to stabilize or encourage the production of those resources.
Also, even the NPC vendors will have fluctuating prices, so I don't think it's that much of an issue.

Maybe the overall effect on the economy will be minimal, but it's the precedent that bothers me. The player-based economy is one of the things that makes SWG unique...I'd hate to lose that.

Justlike cybernetic parts should have been crafted by DEs, the top mining ship should be crafted by shipwrights IMO. By all means give the player a freebee ship to start out with (a fresh noob with no cash needs that) , but the top tier should be made by a shipwright. By the Time they are a master pilot, they can afford to buy a ship, and most likely have bought quite a few others to get there.. At least make it a schematic reward. Its another in a string of disturbing trends of moving more content out of the player crafters hand and into NPCs. I hate to complain, its not my style, but these things irk me a little.
