I went for 4 hours the other day for a change of pace and made 200k creds.. not great for a Master Ranger admittedly.. but as a noob with a 1000 cred fishing pole and free foraged bait, 50k an hour is a Hutt's ransom my friend!
And I found it a nice change of pace. Pretty Naboo scenery, nothing trying to eat me or shoot me!

I can only agree with you to the extent that very few people will fish on a very regular basis... but even if some do, good for them; I'll bet they enjoy it. There is something to be said for throwing on a pair of shorts, kicking of my boots and wadding through the shallows with my fishing pole in hand, no armor, no buffs and an empty pack on my back.
And as for the "nerdy" element... I would have to say that anyone who is on these boards and playing this game saying that is a bit like the pot calling the kettle black. I mean, let's be serious. It's an online game. It's Star Wars. And we're all so hooked that we spend our time not only reading, but posting on these boards. My partner says this game make me a big fat nerd. She's right. So?
Eventually (and hopefully sooner rather than later), you will get the "CAUGHT SOMETHING?!" message. . .If you get the "CAUGHT SOMETHING?!" message, just wait a few seconds and you will get a message saying "You start to reel in your catch." A few seconds after that will be the first "reel-in event" where the fish will either get closer to you, farther away from you, or will take your bait. . . .
Once you get the first "reel-in event" (for example "Your catch charges your location!" or "Your catch takes a bit more slack from your line"), RUN to where the bobber is.
Don't worry, I think that way too. Except without the end ifs, I skip those
Great guide btw. I'm working on ranger at the moment and hope to live off the land quite alot, I'm sure this guide will help me get to grips with something I'm sure I will spend many many hours doing.

OTHER IMPORTANT NOTE: Be careful when you try to move while fishing. I've gotten stuck in run mode while trying to use the cursor keys to back up while fishing, and the only way to clear it was to log out. There are few things that will focus your attention quite like running backwards through a bunch of Rancors and not being able to stop. Don't use the cursor keys to move while you're in fish mode.
I've run into this quite often, also. But I have found if you manage to "stop fishing" and then rapidly press up and down on the cursor keys a few times, the random running motion will stop and you can go back to what you were doing, without needing to log out. This bug also takes effect while crafting, reading e-mail, etc., any function where the game focus leaves the character screen and goes to a pop-up.
Thanks for the tip about facing along the shoreline! I just started a scout a couple of days ago and started fishing for a little survival xp, I'll have to try that!

As soon as you see the "You start to reel in your catch" message you can rush to the bobber location. Sometimes you'll catch the fish without receiving a reel-in event if you're quick enough.
I found that to be true also.
Based on rarity, I manage to sell them on my vendor for 1k - 1.5k each.
These fishies make a nice change of pace from feeding my factory 2,763,452 Structure Modules to build Wall Sections...
