Thread: Rifleman Review (compared to snipers)
Silvo
My suggestions about range, are about bringingbalance & providing a more definative role to the proffesion, whether you call it rifleman or soldier (though I'd have thought pistoleers, commandos, swordsman etccould all be soldiers, so I am not sure what distinction you are trying to make). It is simply an added bonus that it bring a more realistic tone to the occupation. Changing the title of the proffesion would do nothing to fix it, though calling it cannon fodder may lower people expectations.![]()

Riflemen DO have something they're the best at. It's just not what a lot of people on this forum seems to be expecting.
Oh and the real life refrences have absolutely no place in a discussion about a game. Real life doesnt care about balance, the goal is to kill someone before they kill you there is no rules, not the same in a game.

i guess if your taking about a street fight or a drug deal gone bad ...yes it kill or be killed
but if your taking WAR sorry to tell you bud but there is "balance" its called geneva convention why dont you go and read up on it
its quite lenghtly and it will tell you all about the "balance" and "rules" of real life war
i made a post awhile back about the 2.5 damage on a rifleman ...comparing it to real life and i got the same response seems like the only person he agrees with is himself on posts and everyone elses ideas are lame or wrong
i served in the Army for 2 years , hunted most of my life , and collected alot of guns during this time ) ive shot rifles from a .22 to a barret .50 and alot of calibers in between
i know one thing for **edit** sure ...if i am laying in a prone , supported position and i am 60m from my STATIONARY target .....i am NOT going to miss
the only way im going to miss is if a tree falls on me or someone kicks the barrel as i go to shoot..idont know what they did but this accuacy has to be fixed there is no way a elite rifleman or sniper is going to miss multipule times in a row at a target..or they should be fierd
i almost cried when i went prone and poped 2 shots off at a thug with my T21 and missed 3 of em aggro'ed me and i died in about 3 seconds form the lovely 2.5 damage i took...and this "missing" happens alot
now to balance this ..a rilfeman should not miss a stationary target at ideal range ..it just shoulnt happen ..we are supposed to be elite rifleman .."snipers"for god sakes but while"we"are moving i dont think we should hit jack..( try sprintin down your backyard with a bolt action rifle and hit a target hard huh? heh) and now that BH's and commandos have the capibility to "one shot one kill".....why not make sniper shot ..a true sniper shot ..."one shot one kill" on a timer like knockdown or something...
any ideas? its 6 am im falling asleep cant think of anything more to add yet )
Great great great points fellas. Been waiting for posts of this quality for a while and apreciate it.
I totally agree with all points but the one about range. I feel riflemen should have an extended range over all other classes.
To be honest i would be happy if the profession name was changed to Sniper and re-organised/structured it into something that represents this title. Im a master rifleman and only show my Sniper title as i feel it best describes my aproach to combat. I want to stalk my prey be it man or creature. I dont think rifleman was anything what i expected. I mean the rifles arnt even rifles (reagarding the range and damage) and i dont feel like a sniper when in combat, i just feel like a fighter with a slow bulky gun.
I wish so hard we are going to get a serious shake up in this profession and make it much more unique (in terms of no longer being i gun and run class, more of a stalk and assinate class). Understand that i am usually an FPS adict and what ever game i play who suports sniper roles, i will take it hands down over all other professions. I was hoping at least SWG would suport this role in a more involving way. This is a role-playing game but you cant role-play something that doesnt feel like you expect it to. How can you pretend to be a sharpshooter when infact you have limited sniping/sharpshooting abilities and the class is infact more like gunners that use slow guns. a shame
The ideas you have put forward are great and your review is greatly justified.
I just hope someone higher up has the chance to read it and consider what a niche profession this could indeed be.
Again thanks for the port

I would like to see a rifle or technique that lands massive damage with proportionally massive time and HAM penalties to make me feel more like a sniper. An attack could be one that can only occur once, to initiate the battle, from a takecover position (Like surprise shot, though i only used it once and never again). It would also be nice to have another high level attack that doesn't only do Area Effect but that's probably asking for too much.
Extending the range is certainly no hot fix as you point out Cepha & I certainly prefer to seebroken stuff mended first. However I would like to see it in the longer term plan for the development of the proffessions. I think the idea of extending the range of Immobileturrets in line with any rifleman change would be a good one. It mightmake it much more difficult for an individual commando to get close to, but would force the use of a more tactical approach, which is no bad thing. It would be similar to thethe problem that pistoleers will have when closing downrifleman. Individually a problem, in a group, rifleman returns to his favoured incapped position.
The beasties detectionsrange I think would cause them more of a problem. Has anyone noticed if BAF Mobs are able to bring freinds that are further than 64m away from you?
And yes, we don't -really- know what the Devs expect riflemen to be. Maybe they thought we should be uber snipers. Maybe not. We don't know. All we do know are what specials and benefits we get from mastering the tree. And as things are now, we get a really, really powerful AE move at master rifleman. Really powerful as in, no one else in the game can match it. With regards to 'sniperish' things, we're no better than any other marksman. This leads me, at least, to believe that the real role the riflemen are supposed to play is AE support, at least at the end game. Perhaps the Devs simply screwed up (quite possible, I'm sure we'd all agree) but not being able to read minds or look into the future, I'll stick to making decisions with the available information.
Again, maybe we should be snipers. But we're not. The fact we're not snipers as implemented doesn't mean we're gimped, either, as we do have a unique and very viable role in game.
great posts guys, its refreshing to see mature argumnents. as for the bit about range, I personally think an extension of range to maybe 150m would solve several problems. first off, ONLY rifles would have good accuracy at this range, pistols would peak around 80 and carbines maybe around 110. This would also solve the "stalking and stealth" problem, making it so that you could effectively shoot from outside the radar's range. However, this would pose a huge disadvantage to melee classes, so my only idea about helping them would be to double their ranged defenses and increasing theirspeed. this would not only make them able to catch up to running pistoleers, but make them able to hold their own in these longer range fights.
I personally like the idea of the one shot kill - we should have a special abiliy high up in the tree that allows us to take out 1 target (used in pvp mainly)but it has a shocking cost to our ham rendering it useless against a group and make it a hard decision to use it in a battle as it takes the u out of the right almost as badly as the guy who u used it on. If rifleman is to become a sniper class then it would lose the area effect skills i doubt u can argue for both ways. The melee modifier is an attempt to balance an advantage at long range so the idea is not bad i just think there would be less complaint if the balanace was better ie we get a better bonus at long range
Just a quick comment about the real life balancing arguement i think its fair enough to take INSPIRATION from real life but it doesnt have to be hindered or tied to real life physics models etc. and in war there is no play balancing just ask any of those who wont be coming back, those who died fighting a larger force andthe staggering figures of dead who never saw an artillery round coming. I read nowhere in the geneva connvention that says it has to be a fair fight. Sorry got a bit off the topicthere so lets stick to the rifleman profession in swg by all means taking ideas from the real life to enhance it
I didn't read the whole thread.
But realistically if anything we should get a melee BONUS.
Think about this. If someone comes at you with a sword, which would you rather have to block it with, a rifle or a pistol?
I know which I'D rather have. The one with the long metal barrel.
