Neither do I. The game mechanics make a sniper role not practical. Best we can try for is Infantry in my opinion. Which was one of the main reasons for the original post.

Woah....

Flashback...
You sound -exactly- like the chief petty officer in bootcamp...

Guy had a stack of books with titles such as "The Grassy Knoll, how to make the perfect Ghillie Suit", "Feet, Meters, Miles and Kilometers: Do you trust your crosshairs?", "Unseen Death, the Sniper in history", etc...
(Titles made up but close to the real ones)
But he was good...
Very good...

Frighteningly...

Sotaudi,

Exactly right. I responded in another thread how making Riflemen like snipers would require them to actually be much stronger than they are now. The Sniper is the single most cost effective killer on the battlefield.

In Vietnam the kill rate to ordinance was measured in the tens of tons (if I remember correctly). While the Sniper was at 1.5 bullets per confirmed.

The only thing I would disagree in what you said is with Riflemen being the highest raw damage. Personally I think that title should belong to the heavy weapons of the Commandos.

But everything else you said was spot on.

Now we have to convince the Devs of this before they take our mostly working profession and try to change it into something that isn't possible.

very nice post waste. I agree that we will never ever ever ever ever (i think that just about emphasises my point) a real 'sniper' role in SWG. The game engine and combat rules just cant cope with the changes required.

wont stop me RP'ing one though...

Amazing post waste, you realy know your sniping history.

As far as swg is concerned the rifleman is more like a heavy infantry . I would love to see the combat revamp change the riflemen so that we are more like snipers. since we are getting a large speed decrease i think we should get range modifiers to extend our range out past 64m so that we realy could act as snipers on the battle fields and hopefuly our damage modifiers will go way up.

Another thing i would like to see implement is something similar to the ghillie suit you mentioned. Proffesional snipers that know how to use their ghillie suits are nearly impossible to find once hidden (some are so good that you could step on them before you would see them). <--- talking about RL not swg here.

It would be interesting to have a mission implemented for a sniper to take that has them go around gathering the specific resourses for their suit so they could make it. the suit could be then be configured for each planet upon arrival or could have camo options on it radial menu like desert, forest, grassland, swamp etc. and would have ashort delayas the suit is prepared for that enviornment. This camo suit would give the sniper a stealth bonus while laying prone that would make it harder for creatures/npc's/players to locate them. but...

I doubt this could be implemented due to the fact that rangers already have a Camo kit...

Great post.

My first profession in SWG was a hunter/sniper. I was a master rifleman with the ranger hunting and camo lines.

I hunted large game using maskscent camo and conceal shots for large game or headshots for smaller game. This was lots of fun, but not the most efficient way to hunt. I was amazed to find out the melee professions were a better hunting method.

I really dont see riflemen ever being snipers. They are just chatacters who use rifles at close range.

Waste,

Awsome post man. Enjoyed it alot. Here is my 2 cents on how to make us snipers (though everyone would scream nerf and disagree as always lol). First increase our range slightly to like 70-90m or so. Next leave or speed mods the same so our autofire at close distances is still effective and we can pve effectivly but increase the time delays on several specials (but not all). Next make a succsessful /takecover remove us from radar but make it a timed effect like tka powerboost ( say 60sec or so, long enough for 2 or 3 shots) this would allow you to have to shoot and relocate(like a real sniper)once the timer was up or u stand up.Thentheycan target you, now combine HS3 and MS2 into one special with a really long delay that adds a bleed DOT and slightly more damage (since mind will be healable in the CB) and add a suppression special to rifle tree that does little to no damage but forces ur opponent prone ( again with a sightlylongdelay). Now here is my scenario for this and how it would work:

Your group is posted 90m away from a base ready to attack, you are about 30m behind them in prone. A CM comes running out to do a hit and run from 70m away when out of nowhere he is forced to prone and then as he gets up he is hit in his mind pool and bleeding before he can get into range forcing him to retreat and try again, If he makes the mistake of coming out unbuffed and unprepared you do enough damage to incap him. You now become visible to your oppenents due to timer running out so you must get up and move to a new location forcing you to be strategic in your position to be in rangeof opponents but out of range of turrets and they must be strategic in eliminating a sniper.

Thats just my idea of how we could be more sniper-like but be effective in our role during pvp. And as far as people complaining about us being able to solo krayts and the like, thats an easy fix. Dont nerf us, fix the creature. I dont know too many ppl if any who can solo a super battle droid at the DWB, so why is that droid harder to kill than a Krayt dragon, just a thought. Anyways, lots of good posts on this thread keep'em coming.

How about giving riflemen a cloaking ability, making them invisible to enemies at long distance. Of course there must be something who can discover them, and riflemen should be forced to be in a prone position to turn cloaking on.

Extend range for riflemen in prone position to 100m.
