If I get into close range, I do the following:

1. Unequip rifle.
2. If I am fighting creatures, enqueue a phecnacine dart and adhesive mesh trap. Repeat if prudent.
3. Run like a scared little girl, either away from the mob or towards the nearest group member that isn't holding a rifle.

I used to have some pistol skill, as you mentioned, but I have no points for that anymore. I don't miss it much now that I am a master rifleman. However, one thing to keep in mind is that many of our strengths are best utilized with group cover. It certainly isn't impossible to solo, but I think that finding a good group of friends with varied talents can be very beneficial, and very enjoyable.

Good luck, and happy hunting!

LoL I do the exact same thing , my good olde d-18 pistol, If i'm really going down fast I equip my 49% kinetic Chitin

But word to the wise Never group with Novice Commandos On Piket Missions with no medics Lol and no pets

Its a good idea to have a melee profession. Most riflemen learn2h swords or tka.

I hedged my bets so badly early in my career I levelled into Rifleman and Pistoleer at the same time. I'm currently 2032 Rifleman and 0020 Pistoleer. I only PvE atm, sowhen a mobcharges me I:

1) Switch to FWG5
2) Stand
3) Throw on 58% Chiton
4) Warning shot or spam Body Shot or Double-Tap as situation calls for

Depends how desperate I am for Rifle xp. Pistols, even at my level, can put down some decent mobs (specially if my rifle has already wounded them severely). But if I need rifle xpI'll go through the pain of running+warning shot to build some distance before switching back to rifles.

If I'm slow on the draw it doesn't take much to incap me, the Force forbid if my mind is already almost gone from overuse of rifle Specials...

I use both Spraystick and pistols.I have Pistol IV so that I can use up to an FWG5. What I do depends no the situation.

If the target is not melee or if I can kite safely enough ahead of a melee attacker, I will switch to spraystick. I will also switch to spraystick even if he gets within melee range at times if I feel he has enough HAM damage that I can finish him before he gets in more than a couple of good shots on me. Not only does staying with spraystick allow me to continue to accumulate Rifle XP, but if I have been hitting the target with headshots, I can continue to target that pool with the spraystick. But that is only helpful if I can survive because he is already damaged to near death anyway or I can keep just out of his range.

If he does, however, get close enough to me and I do not feel I can take him with spraystick before he takes me out, I will switch to my FWG5. I also have a Scout Blaster and SR Combat on the toolbar to handle different situations, but the FGW5 is what I switch to by default. If they are really up in my face, I like to use the SR Combat because it has the best pointblank modifiers besides having light AP.

I have a great Macro.

Right now I'm strictly PvE so I am usually prone firing at MOBs when they charge. I fire of one or two Warning shots just as they start to charge, but if it looks like neither one will stick, I hit the macro which does the following:

-- switch to pistol (I have a very nice FWG5)
-- stand up
-- clear combat queue
-- fire warning shot

This is all almost instantaneous and keeps me from taking almost any x2.5 melee damage.
I have a complimentary macro that switches back to rifle (but does not go prone).

I either switch to my FWG5 and use warning shot or other attacks if it's something I can kill with the pistol, or of it's a creature or NPC I'm hunting with my rifle (since my pistol skills don't compare), I Feign Death, let them walk away, heal some, get back up and attack them in a way that seems fitting for the situation.

And then you need to deal with the socials...

Set pet on guard.
Get bleed on critter #1.
Critter #2 and #3 Attack, Pet reacts to #2
Headshot on #3 or option to Warning Shot
If #3 closes, Sword hits it with 2-handed head hit, hope for quick kill
Critter #1 by this time has bleed and has targeted me
If 3 is dead or scared off, HS on #1, if not start the spin move on #3 and hit #3 and#1 with melee AoE
Assist pet when cleared of #1 and #3

If they are close.

1. My pet is dead

2. They ignored my pet, or pet ignored command (I hate that)

3. I never saw it coming.

Either way, I normally change to my spraystick and spam point blank for weaker or hurt creatures or spam warning shot as I run screaming like a school girl. Though when in a group more often then not I take it like a man, err wookie. One that knows he's taking adirt nap soon but I take it either way. Hopefully they and their pets take it down first. Running in that case only messes all your shots up, a warning shot is the only way to go and hope they don't turn around and that suppression shot (or trap) sticks.

Throwing traps is not an option as they make you stop when you throw them, total BS.

When I'm feeling a bit crazy being surrounced by say Nunas. I hit area point blank till my finger gets tired, I'm low but alive.

Not to anyone's surprise I end up in a dirt napabout half the time. I try and avoid the three listed above.

Yes, still here, least physically.

Me I took up the swordman tree to agment my rifleman skills since they both get moves to hit the mind pools. So i use a 2 handed sword for when things get too close.
