Thread: What are you using/doing at close range?
I have the same frustration others have expressed about not being able to throw traps while running. my end build is master rifle master ranger, so I don't have the points for a melee profession as a backup. when I started I thought the spraystick and my traps would be good enough, but spraystick isn't that great, and you have to stop to throw traps, so yeah, I was wrong. I'm really hoping that as I advance I'll be able to keep them away all the time.
About traps, I have noticed that I can't *change* the direction or speed of my motion while I am winding up to throw a trap, but as long as I am moving while I enqueue them I will stay moving in the same direction.
I use the FPS key layout, and turn the mouse dead-zone down all the way. This way, the control is normally just like an FPS... WASD to move/strafe, and mouselook. Clicking the right mouse button takes away mouselook, and lets me move the cursor freely to select things in my quickbar. So, when I get into trouble, I set my look direction in a straight vector to the thing attacking me so that I can see what is going on, and right click to lock it there. Then, I hold "S" to run away. I can then click on the traps in my quickbar, and I will throw them at my target without having to stop, I just can't change direction while the throwing animation is going.
Hope this helps, I know that every second counts while attempting to perform the "tactical retreat" (a.k.a. fleeing like a cockroach from the light)...
I used to use a spraystick and warning shot occasionally, but figured it wasn't worth the skill points for me. The current method works just as well since I'm a CH witha graul mauler.
And the current method is... if a mob gets to melee range I unequip the rifle and run like mad into my graul yelling like a lunatic for him to attack it (and take aggro off).
I used to use a spraystick alot, but now that I'm almost a master I shoot the laser rifle at nearly 1 second anyway so the little speed boost from a spraystick isn't worth the damage tradeoff.

I hedged my bets so badly early in my career I levelled into Rifleman and Pistoleer at the same time. I'm currently 2032 Rifleman and 0020 Pistoleer. I only PvE atm, sowhen a mobcharges me I:
1) Switch to FWG5
2) Stand
3) Throw on 58% Chiton
4) Warning shot or spam Body Shot or Double-Tap as situation calls for
Depends how desperate I am for Rifle xp. Pistols, even at my level, can put down some decent mobs (specially if my rifle has already wounded them severely). But if I need rifle xpI'll go through the pain of running+warning shot to build some distance before switching back to rifles.
If I'm slow on the draw it doesn't take much to incap me, the Force forbid if my mind is already almost gone from overuse of rifle Specials...

what are u talking about
with pistol ur hitting health with rifle ur hitting mind
whats the point of picking off their health if you brought their mind down?
Run like hell. As long as your mobs dont have the Teleport ability. If they have the teleport ability ask them where they got it.

If it's almost dead from HS/MS you can use a random pool pistol attack to hit mind 1/3 of the time, or spam bodyshot if pet/group took out most of its health.
