Thread: What are you using/doing at close range?

Heh -go berserk, hotkey a full suit of composite, whip out a sword, whack em and /stim B till they drop or i get mind incapped.

Neither subtle nor elegant, but pretty effective so far. I only rarely PvP though (don't trust my skills yet - 2122 rifle, so...), so I've no idea how badly I'll get wasted when I try this against a player!

I am not a rifleman, but weaponsmith. What weapon do you use at close range? Do you use Spraystick, Pistol or run like h*ll :-)?

I am interested to hear your opinion about spraystick. Do you think they are worth using (as a backup weapon)? Or do you use something else instead (either pistol or melee; but pistol seems to waste less SP). You would be hit with the harsh rifle point blank penality if you are using a spraystick.

If you are using pistols, have you taken some extra skill in pistols (like Pistols II to get Scout blaster). Which pistols are you using?

I have and use a spraystick actually, but I use it mostly on very low level creatures/thugs to sort of kill them while running past them anyway. In real fights spraysticks have the strong disadvantage of giving things 2.5x damage multiplier when they hit you, which isn't nice at all. In real fights I switch to my heavy axe/hammer when things get up close

Depends what I'm fighting, against anunarmoured player I use a DLT20a, against a pet I use pistol + warning shot.

Before I got master marksman I used an uncerted, speed sliced scout + warning shot, the damage doesn't matter since it's only used for warning shot.

I use a spraystick with a "scattering muzzle" to give me an extra bonus at PB range.

Well, that and a full set of composite armor... really takes the sting outta that 2.5 melee penalty.

"So and so punches you for 250pts.

Your composite breastplate blocks 180pts of that."

I gotta feeling I'm gonna go through a LOT of armor tho'...

If I get into close range, I do the following:

1. Unequip rifle.
2. If I am fighting creatures, enqueue a phecnacine dart and adhesive mesh trap. Repeat if prudent.
3. Run like a scared little girl, either away from the mob or towards the nearest group member that isn't holding a rifle.

I used to have some pistol skill, as you mentioned, but I have no points for that anymore. I don't miss it much now that I am a master rifleman. However, one thing to keep in mind is that many of our strengths are best utilized with group cover. It certainly isn't impossible to solo, but I think that finding a good group of friends with varied talents can be very beneficial, and very enjoyable.

Good luck, and happy hunting!

I wrote "rifle point blank penalty" but I really mean the 2.5 X melee damage modifier. This favor for example using a pistol

But Point blank is pretty bad for most rifles as well :-)

I have felt that from the begginning that if I was going to be a rifleman that some pistol skills are absolutely neccessary. I am grinding my way towards master rifleman but I am also a novice pistoleer for those close encounters. I love my FWG and DX2....u never know when a mob is going to warp right on top of you. And if ur stuck with a rifle in hand taking melee damage at 2.5x ur done reeeeaaal quick. Being novice pistoleer allows me to retreat while firing and inflicting damage until I can reach rifle range again.

Since the new change where most animals are social now I worked my way up the pistals tree to pistols 4 and use a FWG.

Hiya Guys,

I use a krayt enhanced and sliced D18 pistol to spam warning shot. Yes I know you are all going /BOGGLE at me but hear me out. I got three of them special order made up for me by Kam. They only require novice marksman to cert so the damage they do is NOT irrelevant, though certainly secondary to fire rate and low ham usage. My krayt tissue enhanced and sliced D18's are better than some of the best scout blasters I have seen and I find myself occasionally outdamaging group members with pistol skills that put my meager novice marksman pistol skill to shame. I use a macro same as the previous poster (In fact I got the idea from one of his posts ) to equip pistol, stand, peace to clear combat cue, and then I spam warning shot.
