Thanks for the clicky, but I have a Q. Not all of us Rangers are ranged. Could it be possible to have Melee Mods, as well, or is that asking for too much right now?

Not many special forces or spies that are Melee only. Can you see James Bond turning in his Walther for a set of brass knuckles? "Navy Seals" with Charlie Sheen and Michael Biehn would be a good example of the Special Forces type that might be closest to where we're going. And personally I rather enjoyed the idea of Rangers going Recon armor, because as a Carbineer it'd give more variety.

Well still, there are a lot of melee rangers still in existence and I doubt they want to drop their whole profession just to remain useful. There are spies with a knife, such as Sam Fisher, Leon (the Professional), Snake, etc. I think that if we're getting combat mods they should be somewhat overall, just to appease those among us. But if we must be Ranged-by-nature, I can see the majority winning out.

The good news is my RIS and padded armor will still work. And, like I said, the Battle is the most versatile armor out there, able to go from all around protection with primus to either specializing in energy or kinetic.

After further consideration, more playtesting and input from you guys it looks like it will actually be better tohave rangersuseBattle Armor with the revamp. In addition to that, we've been testing the Ranger out with general ranged / melee combat mods (Ranged Accuracy, Ranged Defense, Speed and Melee Defense) and it looks promising. We'll keep you posted.

and...now that I look again-- he just said they're TESTING this. That means it's already being worked on internally, and is truly in development, not just "in concept". Guys...we owe Helios and the dev team a lot of beverages.

This is horrible! I return to find my new title on the forum is "Jedi". What's up with that? If they wanted to confer that I'm rare and learned, they'd make my title RANGER. and then make it camo colored.

Funnily enough, was watching a Bond film last night and for the most part he either punched or karate chopped the bad guys, so that'd be stealth and using what was suitable for the environment I guess, and when he did use a weapon he was either supernaturally accurate or totally A-Team

Guns and stealth are mutually exclusive (silencers make more noise than a snapped neck or a slit throat). Besides, this game is all about choices, why start limiting them? If YOU want to be a Ranged Prof, go for it! If I want to smack people around, I should get that choice!

I think what I'm going to do now that I'll have more of a role in NPC and PvP stuff is get myself another suit of armor. Get a fully kinetic layered set of padded, green on white, and get a fully energy layered set of padded, white on green, with an composite helmet to match both. This is why I love battle-- versatility.

I was actually kinda looking forward to the Recon cert. Most all of my characters are Battle certed. I like to wear a different kind of armor per character, I'm running out of kinds unless I want to use padded (bleh).

I agree that too many professions have battle armor certs. Though I can see the problem of changing anything right now, thus it will probably remain that way forever. But Doctor, Combat Medic, Pikeman, Ranger, Creature Handler, Carbineer, Swordsman, and Fencer just seem like a lot. Only 3 professions have Recon certs, and only 3 professions have Assault certs. IMO, Doc and CM should be Recon (recon is the "light" armor, and if your mainly focused on healing light armor would allow you to better do that), and maybe Pikeman could have Assault since they are the "tanks". I just like variety *shrug*

I wish they would just rename the armors.

Energy resistant

Mixed

Kinetic resistant

People are getting hung up on the names, Recon, Battle, and Assault when only battle comes close to desrcibing the funtion of the armor.

To be fair to the devs, the current classifications were strapped on last minute. Orriginally, the plan was for weapons to have three "modes", and certain armor would protect better against certain modes. Recon was going to be good against one mode, okay against the second and poor against the third. , battle would be best against the normal mode, but okay against the others, assault would be the opposite of the recon. They were all going to be able to have the same energy/kinetic resists, as I remember.

It changed VERY quckily, and I think the titles just stuck because they had already started calling them that and then they just switched it to be kinetic and energy. Personally, as I've said elsewhere--

  • Assault armor should be the armor that is against laser bolts. One would assume that if you were assaulting a base, you'd bring armor to deflect the blasts of your enemies, who'd be using primarily energy-base weapons.

  • Battle armor should be the best against kinetic. Battle is more ceremonial armor, and used in close-quarters, it would seem. Thus, the high kinetic protection is what would be needed.

  • Recon armor should be the armor that is most adaptable. A Recon specialist needs to travel light and fast, and their skills require them to fight foes of all types. Thus, they should be equipped with the most adaptive armor around.

Then, we should've been given Recon certs. But as it stands the armor which best fits the ROLE of Recon armor (and thus, the armor we should be certed for) is battle armor.

An understandable thought process... BUT this is not a world soley based on western-european/american society...
You forget a very great and legendary form of spies/special force... the ninja.

Of course, I'm not saying Rangers should be viewed as ninja (Or only as ninja), but I think that the suggestion of embracing melee and ranged equally is a great one. It certainly opens the door to more possibilities and those possibilities are both sensible and intriguing, in my opinion.
