Thread: Ranger correspondent feedback
Nice PvE changes, but we'd like the Ranger class to also serve a purpose in PvP. With the possible exception of Tracking, the other changes outlined don't address PvP. A couple of suggestions:
1. Conceal: Please modify it so thatthere is a second form of it granted atWayfaring 3 or 4. Call it Stealth or Camoflague or Hide. Doesn't really matter what you call it,but make it the PvP version ofConceal.Allow it to take a Ranger off radar indefinitely until he attacks from it. Once he attacks, apply a reuse timer of something like 10 minutes.
2.AdvancedTraps:These should work on players. I can't recall whether you designed them to work on NPC's, but, obviously, I would support that as well if that's not part of your current design. You may also need to build resists into the game to counter these traps - snare/root resists of some kind for instance.
Please revamp the Ranger class so that is brings something to the tablebeyond hunting mobs out in the wild. Thanks.

Holy heck, congratulations Rangers! Now I wish I didn't drop Wayfaring IV and Bioscience IV... although this is a blessing, it is also a curse, expect more players to become dabblers or even Master Rangers because of your new kickass role and abilities.
Yes I definately think more players will be attracted to Ranger after these changes are implemented ![]()
I'm really pleased by almost everything I seein the correspondant feedback, really good to see that some of the great posts on this board and submitted by our correspondant haven't gone unheeded.
ReeveConnor: It does in a couple of ways address PvP actually.
Tripwire affects both NPCs and Critters so the potential is there for it being used against faction pets(although that might not happen) but at the very least it will work well against non-player controller faction enemies like Storm Troopers garrisoned throughout cities.
/Conceal will allow Rangers to conceal themselves or a whole group, which while not directly affect PvP, gives the player and his pals the advantage of being able to approach from directions unexpected due to natural spawns and reach destinations safely.
The scanning track ability will be of great use in tracking down opponents...at high levels it will be able to be used to located the directions of all players as well as NPCs and critters within a certain range. This will allow a Ranger to help monitor the area and be able to help coordinate attacks by pointing out where enemies are emplaced or approaching from.
And, of course, we don't know what other sorts of special camps they have in mind for Rangers yet either...just the hunting blind one...for all we know one or two of the new ones could be of incredible use in PvP play.
Admitedly, the Ranger in SWG seems definately designed to serve more of a PvE roll than a PvP roll, but some of the new abilities, and potentially future camps, can certainly be useful in a PvP roll...I think tracking will likely be the most useful of them overall...especially in Battlefields and when defending/attack a player placed faction base or town.
WOOT!!! WOOT!!! WOOT!!!
This is sooooooo wonderful!!! I can't believe that we got basically EVERYTHING we asked for! This is exactly the kinda' love we rangers need. Holo, thanks for the post. And to the dev, YOU DA MAN!!!
A great day in rangerdom. I knew it was worth the patience.

Let's get things straight. /track will be for creatures only. So, stop saying that the track command will be used in PvP when it's really the /scanarea command that allows tracking of players. Honestly don't know why I'd even want this unless I'm trying to find opposing faction members, but why the heck would a ranger be able to differentiate rebel from imperial footprints of vice versa? That makes me laugh. Please...no. Track an AT-ST maybe, but not a player. Perhaps....no, I don't see it at all, no. Both of these skills should be used to locate AI only, not player characters.

Wow! =O Everything we wantedand more. Congrats guys you have shown what this system can do. Now we understand why the ranger took soooo long. You managed to include everything!
Adding /conceal back in and making it a part of a new crafting system is perfect! Curious as to how this will effect PvP, willmy squad and I appear on another enemy playersradar? If so this truly adds to the Rangers PvP skills as was needed; if not the justcamo and the hunting blinds on adventure planets makes me pant in anticipation.
On to the Blinds, it was a perfect addition, in many of my posts I stated how the ranger would be the Master Hunter of the Star Wars world; one who would take large groups of people to an exotic planet for a little hunting, The blinds fit in perfectly with that concept, any hunting guide would set up a blind as well as a base camp to allow people to rest up or join the fun. As a Master Ranger one could have a Field Base and a Hunting Blind set up at the same time and they would stay up until the ranger deploys them or he leaves the planet.
Tracking was along shot as far as I was concerned. I loved the idea don't get me wrong, I just figured it was such a large addition to the game, it would not be announced. How happy am I this adds to the master hunter that I know the ranger to be. I cant wait to lead CH merchants to all the popular pets of the week
.
Lures and traps oh my! Its perfect. Talk about crowd control. You know I was wondering If I was going to go Master and skip the trap line so I could get more Pistoleer boxes, but Inow knowits master all the way!
Now, I ask if you've readthrough thispost and want to know why I think they did a perfect job and gave us everything we wanted please readtwo post I made over the last three weeks. In these post Iist what I thought the SWG Ranger should be and what it would take to improve the profession. My second post statedwhat I though was in dev for the ranger and I was dead on!.

Well Im a satisfied ranger who now has to go look at his template all over again do to these amazing changes. The ideas I get reading through Holo's post are great. I'm glad I had faith that the ranger would be what I wanted it to be and it is. MasterRanger is gonna mean something now!I can't wait to start using my new skills when theystart showing up. Thanks for listening!
Well let me say a couple of things, I didn't recall the exact name of the command, which is why I said the scanning track ability up above, sorry if I wasn't clear. As for its use in PvP, I was just suggesting possible implementations for it, I personally don't play PvP andreally have no interest in being involved in it.I picked Ranger as one of my primary professions for the PvE advantages. So I don't claim to be an extreme expert in the area. I'm just pulling my potential uses from posts, stories, and experiences I've heard from other players from both beta and live about large and small scale confrontations.
Does that still make a ranger useful in PvP direct combat? No, unless traps are made to work on CH pets and faction NPCs in the case of the trip wire and/or camps are added that can be used in PvP. And I do understand why you'd like Ranger to have some viable PvP use.
But I also counter with the following: Rangers have from the get go been obviously designed to be more of a PvE profession...with these new updates they are basically making the ranger what the description said all along, a master of the environment and of tracking. Rangers will now have tremendous advantages in PvE, and is it so wrong for us mostly PvEers to have a profession almost entirely geared towards us when just about every other combatinvolving profession is either geared towards PvP these days or at least takes it into account?
Now don't misread me here, I am most definintely not anti-PvP. I think it has its place, and if Rangers get some adjustments that can be used directly in PvP, then more power to you. But I am angered slightly by *some* people demanding that PvP abilities be added into Ranger whose arguements seem to be based on either:
A) Their desire to be good at all types of fighting since, seeing Ranger's potential in PvE, they'd like to be able to kick butt and take names in both PvP and PvE by having tons of PvP use in Ranger as well.
or
B) Saying that Rangers have always useful in player combat in every other game. Which I find incredibly ironic when so many people keep asking for SWG to make itself different from other MMORPGs yet they are asking for more of the same out of the profession they play.
Any other reasoning behind adding PvP to ranger I can fully understand and I understand those desires. Like players who have friends who are or personally want to take part in factional combat, and they'd like to be able to add some value to the fight. Or players who really are mostly PvE players, but would like to be able to, on rare occasions, carry their skills over to PvP in some way since they are already pretty filled up skill point wise.
I guess my whole point here is sure, add some "direct" PvP usability to Ranger if you can get it, just don't try and make the whole class into yet another dual purpose PvE, PvP role by making over most of the skills to be used in both fashions of combat. I'm seeing the PvE's slowly getting pushed out more and more just like in every other MMORPG every day as more and more changes in the other professions are revolving purely around PvP use....I don't want to seethe Ranger go that route too....I like to see the Ranger as the last bastion of freedom left for us pure PvE players.
It's so obvious that elite professions never got the time they needed to be tested in the beta.
To those of you who still enjoy paying for this beta, good luck, I hope you at least have fun during that time.
Thank you devs, Holo, and especially Mineras --- I don't care if this takes two years to implement (Holo - don't get any ideas, I'm far more patient than other players :smileytongue![]()
Just a thought though --- we wanted our profession to be unique --- too bad, this rocks so much I already hear the sound of skill points being surrendered to become a ranger - LOL
Truly Impressed

I can't believe it !
I am the happiest man on earth right at this moment ... I'm still crying for joy ...
Good work, hope this will go through sooner than ever ... but remember to keep an eye over bugs ![]()
