It was never a product. We had an icon called "conceal" that had a little man with some foliage around him, and I think I saw some binoculars in there.

You had to click this icon, or type the command it represented, in order to apply a camo kit to yourself. You can only apply a camo kit to yourself if you are on that planet and if you have that kit in your top level inventory.

How long, exactly, have you been a Ranger? I take it, since you don't want to "hold someone's hand," that you are not very social, and would much rather be in a rpg than a multi-man online role playing game. You have to interact with people in a mmo, but not an rpg, and since you don't want to interact with people it would seem to me that you do not get anything we have been trying to tell you, or you just don't care, which are textbook traits of an anti-social state of mind. It is someone who does not want company, and does not care how cruel they are to others.

No. You never had to "click this icon" because there was never any reason to use it. The only reason to ever use conceal, always start with - "This one time, me and my friend were role-playing..."

No kidding it was never a product. Now it is. Therefore, this is an improvement. Try to actually read what I'm saying. We actually have something we can use, rather than just a neat looking icon to stick in our toolbar.

You really like the idea of having the role of a Ranger to be following artisans around to their harvesters? Or sitting in a starport begging people to let us help them? I'm very social in the game. I never hunt solo, always in groups. I would just rather spend my time playing the game. I'm sure artisans would rather spend their time playing the game as well. We don't need a "buddy system" to keep people camouflaged. Just sell them the kits, and move on.

I really don't know how you figure I'm the one that doesn't want to interact with other people, when it's you people that are throwing a littlefit and refusing to offer these services to other people. I've been running around harvesting creatures, crafting kits and distributing them to people in the game. You sit here and b!tch about how much this sucks that we now have to share with others. Yeah, I'm the anti-social one here. Keep telling yourself that, while you're sitting in a camp by yourself refusing to let anybody else use your camo.

Oh, yeah, you definitely became a Ranger for the role-playing value, with that kind of comparison.

Riiiiiight. Because yelling "Camo buffs 15k! Form line in front of me. 75k for line cut" has much, much more role-playing possibilities than selling your supplies to other people.

Eavik..
It's obvious you disagree with many (I didn't say all, or even the majority)..

You should really tone down the sarcasm though. It's extremely thick.

No one's going to change your opinion, and others aren't going to change theirs. Overall, this thread has degenerated into bickering, rather than meaningful discussion.

One fact that can't be argued -- Camo was a ranger "ability", and something that was given to us as stated by Holocron and the Dev team for the purpose of making us unique in '03.

That ability has now been given to everyone. This is why many are upset.

You're just fanning the flames now, accusing others of whining.

But we ARE still unique when it comes to camouflage. That's the point.

People still can't go around and conceal themselves without the help of a Ranger. Camouflage doesn't grow in trees, it comes from us. We just trade or sell it now instead of apply it.

I'm still waiting for somebody to explain to me WHY it's better to apply the camo ourselves rather than letting the end user apply the product. Because this whole "uniqueness" thing just isn't doing it. The only thing application gives us is what I described above - following people around as they run menial errands, or spamming in starports...or just hoarding the kits to ourselves and never using them - like we had before.

The idea being argued is that we wanted to remain unique through our skills, and being able to provide a benefit to a group. In the same way that doctors are needed in a group because of their roles as healers, rangers want to be masters of the wilderness and concealment... to be hunting guides, and help camo their party members.

With this change, you don't even need to know a ranger.. You just need to find some kits on the bazaar.

QFE.. was expecting that soon.

It's not going to develop into anything constructive at this point...

Hmmm... I seem to be one of the few still able to enjoy the game and profession, yet somehow I'm the troll. Whatever floats your boat - that doesn't really concern me.

What does concern me is when I see people running and yelling at the devs to have them remove something from the game that I happen to like. It's happened far too often to my Smuggler character with all the BH/Jedi whining. I'll be damned if I'm going to let that start happening to my Ranger character as well, without stepping up to speak my mind.

And, without a hint of irony, it also stands for Quick Fix Engineering.

Where I used to work that went something like this...

"Hey, Ken, we've got a water ingress situation on the upper section of the pedestrian input output interface due to a critical failure of the thermally modified silica translucent screening. How best whould we remedy the situation?"

"Well, if you ask me, I'd go for a QFE. Take a Universal Adjuster, some Fixers and a sheet of, oooh, 12mil ply. That should do it..."

"So, ken, what you're saying is???"

"Go get a bit of wood, some nails and a hammer and stick it over the broken window in the door".

Ok...
here is how i see it.
if you look at the game at a whole, this is actually a good thing.
1: Rangers get another means of income
2: The artisans/ crafters/ entertainers can finally go into the wilds a little happier because of the rangers.
However, if you look at it from a ranger's perspective, its not a great thing.
1: something that was exclusively ours (never mind how mediocre it was to begin with, and before this, we complained that it was not good enough) has been essentially been changed so that every one can use it.
2: this has the unfortunate effect that with a ranger revamp so far ahead in the future, that we wonder when will it be our time...
Let me make this very clear.
This is not about camo!!!!
This is about the Ranger community's fear that we will be rendered essentially useless in what we want to do the most. HUNT.
This is about us clinging tightly to what was ours... and it is about our fear that other skills that are exclusively Ranger skills being given to others.
I remember a few months ago when our fearless correspondant asked "who still uses camo?"
less than 10% of us actually used camo on a regular basis because it was not worth the resource investment.
Yet now when the entire community gets to use it.. we flip the frell out!
Honestly....
how many of you used camo on a regular basis before this announcement came out?
Lastly: I am not for this change. I also feel that it diminishes us.
for frell's sake...

Oh I love a quick frell in the morning....

Actually--I take it back.

The real problem is that we're really getting down to our last straws.

At the start, Rangers and Scoutswere unique. Boulder-sized uniqueness, just like all the other classes. But over time, with the nerfing-by-attrition of camps, the increasingly broken traps, the harvesting changes, the broken harvest droids, our almost-total exclusion from the CU, the fact that the CU means other classes can do what we were intended to only better than we ever have... That boulder has been worn down and chipped at until it's hardly more than a small rock.

And yet they still keep chiselling off parts to give to other classes.

We still stand alone--we still stand. We're proud of that.

But SOE seems to not realize that every time they "expand" on us by making it easier to emulate our skills--especially our Elite ones--they're risking shattering the profession into pebbles. That is why we're mad.

It's not that we're mad because we have this "new opportunity." We're mad because it's time we got mad and said, "Enough."

I may have said this in another thread, or maybe this one.. not sure.

I WILL NOT be selling or giving away camo kits to anyone with exception
to known fellow Rangers on occasion. Never in bulk form to anyone that
can turn around and sell them. SOE has taken from us, and they will get
nothin from me. Especially not sacrificing another Ranger skill for
their SCREWUP in the CU.
