Thread: SWGRanger Poll: What is your Primary Weapon Choice?
The rest of the time:
Rifles (ALR or tusken) sliced for dam, pupped for AC.
Pistol (Lightweight FWG with movement/firing mods)
uhm... that's it.
Oh, and I don't use pets, I take groups out hunting instead... they're not so easy to train but soak up a dang sight more damage before dying

1) Pistols: Probably my own personal deal, but ever since I first saw Han Solo fire of his blaster, I kinda always associated that with Star Wars. Pistols always seemed to be much more flexible than rifles to me. Also, I can't deny the coolness factor of my DE-10 (which I named 'Winona')!
2) Pikes: My first mastered elite profession. Pikes just did it for me... I loved the area attacks, doing a sweep and seeing Stormies fall around me... heh, Stormtrooper blossoms. I always thought that Pike had the most graceful animations too. But that could just be me being biased.
3) Aeryn: She was my Pre-CU tanking RazorCat that had a poison special attack. She was my constant companion for a while. She was even red, instead of brown, which just made her cooler in my mind. Also, I swear that those pets had personalities. She was fierce, and with Ranger being "freed up" a bit, I may have to take up some CH again.

No offense Aragorn, but that's gotta be operator error. I have a pre-cu converted E11 Mark 2 as a carbineer and it's about 10 max damage away from being damage capped. The SAC isn't spectacular, but it get's me through, and I have +25 in carbine speed tapes that I've collected myself or from my guildmates over the last 2 years. I'm probably one of the top 5 logest term Carbineers on my server, and a new Rifleman in my guild in less than 2 months was beating my damage and consistantly drawing agro from the Jedi using his snipershot and advanced headshot. Before he took to rifles I was drawing agro all over the place when the CU was introduced. Rifles have fine damage output, they should never have had an area attack, that has always been Carbineers strongest benefit. Pre-CU I was taking out scanning crews solo by kiting and area firing them, where riflemen were supposed to be doing that with concealshot. Now I'm lucky if I can take out a group of level 60's with FullAutoArea and Suppression Fire.
Back on topic I've always been Carbineer. I tried rifles for a bit, and they were a little slow. I haven't tried it since the CU though, I'd probably like it more now.
1. Carbines
2. Rifles
3. lightsaber

No offense taken, and it's quite possible that they had speed tapes, buffs, food, spices, etc that pumped them up. I generally don't buff, don't have any CA's for speed or anything like that, rarely use more than the odd Brandy or Blob Candy and maybe some Crispic. Don't use "uber" rifles, I like my LD-1 for the RP value and looks as much as anything - I get by fine, tho I know I could find a better gun if I cared about slightly higher DPS, etc. Oh, and on snipershot - that's still only good for 1 shot only, unless your opponent is too stupid to close to within 20m of you. The time it takes for windup and cooldown pretty much guarantee that you're getting 1 snipershot off, and unless they don't close to range for some bizarre reason, you best get yourself up off the ground and use some other attacks.

Not in balance how, out of curiosity? If you mean that they're supposed to be nukers yet aren't very good in that role, you're entirely correct.
Ah yea... Let me answer this with the simple and obvious.
BH Riflemen
CH Rifleman
SL Rifleman
CM Riflemen
Riflemen Riflemen
Everyone is a rifleman if they are ranged.. how is that ballanced? Lets see one of those stratic (sp) surveys that shows what is the most popular profession... I bet credits riflemen will be in the top 5 because of the unballance.
Why do I say its unballanced? Cause I have played rifleman pre and post CU.
Now I know most people love rifleman. I don't blame them. Stick to what works, yea I get that. However if everything was truely ballanced... that poll would not have turned out that way... it would have been even accross the board.
Having a strong preference for a profession for one of several reaons (range of the weapon, high damage possible with an ALR without needing to Master, etc) doesn't mean a profession is unbalanced. There are more jedi and BH than anything else, does that make them unbalanced? (Well, with jedi, probably so... ). Profession popularity doesn't necessarily equate to whether they are "balanced" in terms of game mechanics. Riflemen are supposed to be nukers. However, the best shot they have is useless for anything other than an opening shot, several of rifleman's best abilities are VERY restrictive in terms of how and when they can be used (proximity to things, posture, etc), little to know abiltiy to apply states, worse snare I've seen in the game, loss of all AoE ability with the CU, a master weapon that's actually worse than the CL54 non-master weapon (this might apply to multiple professions tho), and in many cases NOT the best class for laying on lots of damage quickly - I've been outdamaged by carbines and pistolsand melee classes previously. I'd respectuflly disagree that riflemen are too powerful or unbalanced - in fact, I'd love personally to see more damage, slower shots, and less restrictions on some of the moves. That's just my opinion tho, and I don't necessarily thing that riflemen are completely unbalanced for either good or bad, I just think that we don't necessarily fulfill the role of "nuker" as well as we could or should. And I've also played on pre and post CU, largely for the fact that to me, a big game hunter (Ranger) would use a rifle.
Simply because a lot of people pick a profession (or a line from a profession) doesn't mean that the line or the profession are unbalanced. Lots of folks take Exploration IV to get the TN benefits - does that mean Scout is unbalanced? Lots of people take medic skills or CM skills for healing - does that mean medic is unbalanced? I'd personally say no, those are choices to dabble and take skills that make you better at one aspect of the game.
Now how can you be having trouble taking out CL60 NPCs witha carbine.
I am going to use the Avatar platform as an example thats were I did my testing with Rifles and carbines.
As a Master Ranger\Master Carbine or Rifles my healingconsisted ofRuby Bleilm, Stim-Ds, Vercupti, and Pixie.
Like Dekion stated you get off one Snipershot and they are on you. I would then kite using headshot, Startleshot, legshot. I always lost to the Avatar platfrom Guardsand Captains when I tested solo all over CL80. Yes in firefights I outdamged Jedi and Tanks and had to be cvareful to avoid drawing aggro in battle, especially in a confined area.
Now last night I was curious so back to the Avatar platform. I mastered carbines Saturday night and had not done anything yet to test. So I go back to the Avatar platfrom and start testing pulling single targets guards or captains. As long as I kept them off me and out of melee range I was good to go.
As a carbineer I have a snare and knockdown I can use to maintain distance. I still had to rely on my standard mode of healing listed above. But the ability to knockdown and snare coupled with specials that hit hard without the windup that Snipershot has made killing the Avatar platfrom NPCs easier. As a riflemen once you are kiting you are no longer using SniperShot so out the window goes your most powerful attack.
