Thread: The Camp Question...
I'd like to think of this proposal as a brainstorming session. We should at least let the devs be aware of the threads for this. After all they will have to program it and we might not get but a 10th of all the ideas in there.
I'm not sure what "camp"
I am in, but I would like to see repairs minimally, and hope for big things. I will be happy with the repel aggro and semi-permanancy at least and hope for the modular. I don't know if they will give full attention to the latter if we just say "please fix these three things". But if they are swamped with the brainstorming session, we might not see a single change for 6 months, perhaps not even till the SE.
Maybe what we should do is phrase it in such a way all gets in yet the simple bit goes first as a prequil.
Since the Devs will likely debate the proposal internally, then change it around a bit, and finally ask the community for comments (that is if they decide our proposal has merit in the first place), I would at this point send the proposal to the Scout and SL corrispondents, see what they think. Once the correspondents have bought in, they can propose it to their forum users. At the same time as they are asking their forum users for input, we propose it to the Dev's. In the proposal say that the SL and Scout community have been asked for comment but have not yet responded.
That way we get the proposal infront of the Devs on time &the SL and Scout communities have been given a heads up (so they don't feelblindsided when the Devs post their camp proposal in 2 months and ask for comment).
"the SL and Scout communities have been given a heads up"
Good call. I posted a thread in each of those forums last night for just that purpose. ![]()
I'll send a heads up direct to the DeltaXi65 and Thulium and explain our intentions.

Nice. How have the members of those communities responded so far? Maybe you could provide links to those threads (in case they haven't been stickied and have fallen off the map already? I haven't checked on those forums yet to see if your thread is still visible).
"How have the members of those communities responded so far?"
A few nibbles on the SL forum, none on the Scout forum (though I suspect most of posters that care read this forum already).
The posts simply point back to the main Modular Camp V4 thread in this forum. That way all the comments are centralized. ![]()
Should we flip a coin?
Is that constructive or what!! You're all welcome ![]()
How bout this... send a dev a glimpse of this new camp system and have them tell us wether it's doable or if he thinks we're nuts. Can we do that? .. Some very short and decisive feedback from Thunderheart, or whoever would really help us make our decision.. natuarly.
It's so risky to send in such a complex yet great design and have it shot down and also have us miss our long awaited fix.
"How bout this... send a dev a glimpse of this new camp system and have them tell us wether it's doable or if he thinks we're nuts. Can we do that?"
Essentially that is what the entire Outdoorsman document is about. We describe what we want, and they tell us if it is feasible or completely out to lunch.
We might as well send the entire proposal for emphasis, rather than sending it piecemeal.
I say don't ask for the modular camp idea right now. The camps are not a huge part of our profession, especially once you've reached camping 4. If they could just fix the problems with the current camps, mainly the repel not working, and add in the feature of stay up during combat, it would do for now.
The repel is a bug and should take proiority over additions. If they make the ranger camps, or even just the field bases, able to stay up when entering combat it would be a great improvment. Additionally maybe with the HTFB we are able to leave it un attended for any length of time, or a long timer if needed. Of course if you wish to drop another one, it will destroy the first one. So you only have one up at a time.
So in summery:
1) fix the repel so it works, and well.
2) add the feature for us to enter combat and the camp wont disband. possibly only for the Field Bases.
3) add the feature for the HTFB that it can stay up for a long time if not indeffenately, until either we setup another camp, or disband it. Obviously if we log it will disband as well, but that's already in the game.
"The camps are not a huge part of our profession, especially once you've reached camping 4."
That's an interesting way of looking at it.
I think most posters are putting so much effort into the system because it is not a huge part of the profession...And it should be (it is a full 1/4 of our skill set).
"The repel is a bug and should take proiority over additions."
The bugs are another problem entirely... They can be fixed in the interim, while others work on new designs for the systems.
The developers have the Top 5 bug list, and right at the top of that is the Camp Repelproblem.
Remember, we are trying to convince the designers... The programmers are the ones that fix the bugs (though sometimes they are one in the same).
"what was their reaction?"
Their forum is even slower than ours. Almost as slow as the Scout forum.
I do know irott and Gondo posted in the Modular Camp V4 thread... You can read their comments in there.
PanzerGR and ob194 posted on the Modular Camp Proposal in the SL forum... You can read their comments in there.
So far, about the same mix as with our forum. Some yea, some nay.
I would give it until Monday before we can get a trueimpression of the reaction. ![]()
