Thread: State of the Profession (Nov 3)
"I love atleast seeing SOMETHING now & again "
I agree... At least one change per Publish for each profession, regardless of the current focus would indeed be beneficial for morale. ![]()
"But don't we have enuff of em allready?"
What? You can never have enough camps. ![]()
"since this type of service is meant to be a Faction Purk"
Really? I had not heard anything along these lines...
- Anyways... Who says it can't be a Faction Perk for Overt Rangers?

Whoa, NRaaS though my idea was cool! /bow

While I'm posting, a big thanks to Thunderheart for at least showing the Devs notice us ![]()
"I am a little confused on the 2 of the 3 models for Rangers."
I knew the overview would stir up some debate. ![]()
But here is a type of breakdown of how I see the various groups, obviously they are not mutually exclusive.
Aragorn Ranger / At one with Nature:
- Understands Creature behavior intimately, and can predict their next move.
- Can live off the land with ease, able to use what theforest provides for healing and enhancements
- Exists as a ghost in the wilderness with minimal interference and ultimate concealment
- They aid their groups with theexperience of concealment and damage prevention, and herbal remedies
Park Ranger / Wilderness Enforcer:
- Keeper of the peace between the Sentients and Creatures.
- Being tasked with the protection of the wilderness from marauders and civilization, they understand howto avoid damage and inflict it when necessary
- Good knowledge of creature habits and locations of habitats, providing knowledge of useful herbs
- They aid their groups with their knowledge of the wilderness environment
Military Ranger / Survivalist:
- Ultimate Survivalist and Combat Specialist.
- Primary concern is using the terrain and knowledge of the land to gain advantage over his opponents
- Their only concern with the creatures is how best to kill them and make use of the resources they provide for the Ranger's benefit
- They aid their groups with added combat experience and superior knowledge of killing
----
These are hard and fast categories that I envisioned while writing up the overview...
- Just like the Bartle groups, everyone has a bit of each in their play style.

However they should match up with how many of you might describe this profession.
- If you have comments or additions... I am all ears.

"Request for bigger campfire in the higher level ranger camps. The current one is apparently not impressive enough. "
LOL. Campfire envy? You know, they tell me size doesn't matter ![]()

I would 1st like to say that I love atleast seeing SOMETHING now & again on our profession even if its negative this way I know its beeing atleast looked at.
That being said, I only have one real discrepancy on that entire list.
Request for an Evac Camp
- The camp would deploy with a shuttle service that could transport people back to a city port
- It would not be necessary to have people able to go to the camp, though that would a welcome addition if possible
Isn't this a faction thing (to be/possability)?
Now, Mind You I am a ranger (4,4,3,1/3) and I love the big tents, But don't we have enuff of em allready?
And doesn't this just waste time that could be used on other problems especially since this type of service is meant to be a Faction Purk!?!?
The deal is peeps tend to kill each other for the "Clone Ride" which seems real silly. A Ranger should really have this ability, why should it be limited to a faction "perk"? I see it for later perhaps, but the need IS real.
"Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this the beauty of SWG?"
You are completely correct. ![]()
However almost nothing in the Ranger skill set actually effects how well you fight (expect that nebulous Creature-to-Hit
)...
- Many Rangers would enjoy at least some additional combat advantage towards creatures, to augment their combat profession.
The traps are useful only up to a point...
- Perhaps once we receive more of them, this feeling might be sated, but I doubt it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this the beauty of SWG?
To me:
* The the "Aragorn Ranger" would be a Master Ranger
* The "Wilderness Enforcer" might be a 4-4-4-0 Ranger, 4-0-0-0 Rifleman, 0-0-0-4 Artisan
*The "Military Ranger" would be perhaps a 4-2-4-0 Ranger, 2-2-0-0 Commando (Yes, it can be done.)
Anyways, my point is that by mixing and matching your professions you can make any type of character you want. They're your skill points, use them.
I agree. However BH is really enhanced with Pistoleer. Carbine as well, but not to a great degree. Where is the comperable "nice fit" for Rifleman? Not really one available. To my mind, there should bemore match ups that like the BH/Pistol or you have to go into nerfing those templates, I REALLY HATE nerfing.
Now, in reality the "Aragorn" ranger is the military ranger, but the weapons are different (which makes thetactics different). It's just a mideavil version. The rangers were tasked withprotecting Rivindale and the lands west, like The Shire when Sauron's spirit was found in Merkwood. They were solders of the Norththat learned the wild, trained by Lord Elron's elves and the wood elves.
It shouldn't be limited to Musicians and Dancers. "Master Entertainer" is far more difficult and costly to reach than either Novice Musician or Novice Dancer, and should be included in a campsite BF healing ability. They also get the cool mandoviol's (guitar-type stringed instrument). Hehe... my alt is a Master Entertainer / Trained Musician.
Lazarus Long, Master Ranger, Antarian Rangers - Intrepid
"Now, in reality the "Aragorn" ranger is the military ranger"
You are completely correct of course.
In actuality, because of the way the game is set up, all Ranger types require some form of combat training.
- It is just how we wish to augment those abilities that change our perception of the profession.

Nrass
In your further description of the three models I see reference to hunting only in the Military model.
I think there are a great many Rangers who do envision us as Big Game Hunters yet this is only reflected in passing in the Military Model.
Am I in the minority in thinking that the Ranger is a Big Game Hunter? If so I be quite and stop harping on it.
If not I think the hunter aspect needs a great deal more fleshing out in your model descriptions.
Why do I think this way?
1. One of our titles is Hunt Master.
2. One is Trap Master, another form of hunting.
3. Harvesting is a big aspect of our skills. How do you get to Harvest? Well by Hunting and Killing Creatures.
4. Tracking, we can track creatures (not just creatures). Where does tracking creatures lead to. Well killing them and harvesting them.
5. We get bonuses to "Hit" creatures.
When I looked at the skill tree just when the game was released, that is what I saw. A Big Game Hunter.
So am I wrong?
So what is a Ranger? A Big Game Hunter, A Military Ranger, A Park Ranger, An Aragorn Ranger? Which is it.
To me looking at the skill trees, I see a Big Game Hunter, Outdoorsman who can live off the land and an Explorer of the wild.
I don't see a Park Ranger or Military US ARMY Ranger and Aragorn Ranger is a little confusing and don't think its a good term to use.
Some came into this class thinking as I do. Some came into this class thinking Park Ranger. Some came into this class thinking Antaran Ranger from Star Wars lore. Some came into this class thinking US Aramy type Ranger.
We cannot be all things.
All classes have have their problems, some more serious than others.
BUT I know Rangers are the only ones suffering from this HUGE IDENTITY crisis !
We need to be more than glorified Scouts and we need to have our problems fixed but ABOVE ALL ELSE we need the Dev's to tell us what their vision of Rangers are and where are are going.
We cannot keep on without knowing. Why?
The fixes we need and enhancements we ask for are all colored by our view of the class. So we end up splintered and asking for different things that mostly do not fit in with each groups ideas of the class.
So I firmly believe that the Dev's telling us what their concept of the class is, in much greater detail than they have so far, is our highest priority.
They owe it to us to lay to rest this identity crisis. Not everyone will be pleased with the answer but at least we will know what we are supposed to be.
Telling us will not require any coding, will not require any balancing and will not require any play testing.
So we need to all come together and despite our different views, strongly cry out for an answer.
Nrass, and I compliment you on a good job and ask you to make solving this identity crisis first. We can work on new camps and fixing traps better after we know the answer.
