Thread: Sorry, Rangers

Or the Ranger forum. Those guys go in there everyday, happy as little clams. All knowing they aren't getting jack until after JTL and most likely nothing until 2005. Don't know how they do it.
I guess we find ways to have fun with what we have. Its kind of like buying a gift for your kid, and they play with the box it came in for hours....
Yeah, what we have is underpowered, uncreative, nerfed, and bugged.... but dammit, I still have fun.
Didn't want to bother taking up a whole new thread for this, and I think it may be fitting to put it here. Here is my take on things...
- You sign up to play SWG with the intent of becoming a Ranger.
- You log-in.
- Work your way slowly up Scout and a suitable combat profession to further enhance your abilities.
- You, over time, become a Novice Ranger. Bravo.
- As you progress, you begin to question the usefulness of your ranger skills. You push on however in the hopes that things get better as you go along. *Poor, sweetdeluded child.*
- You come close to Master Ranger and seriously come to doubt your choice in taking this profession, but you press on again, because you desire nothing else but to be the finest Ranger the galaxy has ever seen.
- You become a Master Ranger.
- A brief moment of celebration as you bask in the glory of becoming a Master Ranger.....
- ....then, the realization sets in. You.......are........obsolete. Your skills, while useful to some, are lacking in your mind due to the tremendous amount of skill points required to attain it.
- Now after a period of time, and due to your stubborn refusal to let go of something that is holding you back, you decide to drop Ranger. But before you do.....
Now here is where things skew into the wonderful world of make-believe.
- You are somehow able to gain the attention of a Dev and have a one on one chat with him about Ranger. Here is how I see that going.....
Ranger: Excuse me, but I have to ask you why it is that you have thoroughly ignored this potentially great profession, a profession which I myself joined this game for, in favor of a profession that has not existed nearly as long as all the others professions in game. (Authors note: I know that many people joined to be a Jedi. I, however, did not. I joined to be a Ranger. I know there are others like me.)
Dev: I'm sorry, but the Ranger profession is just not a priority right now. We understand that you all want some attention, but that is attention that we cannot afford to give you at this time. Why don't you try out some other professions in the meantime?
Ranger: Because I don't want to. I joined up to be a Ranger.
Dev: Hmmm. Interesting. Why don't you try out Bounty Hunter?
Ranger: (slightly amused) Because I don't want to beaBounty Hunter. I joined up to be a Ranger.
Dev: Ahh, I see. Well, why don't you spend some time on the Ranger forums and help them come up with a clear concise idea as to what the Ranger should be?
Ranger: (confused) They did that already. It's called the Outdoorsman Proposal. Ever heard of it?
Dev: Sounds familiar. Hey, why don't you work towards being a Jedi? That would be fun!
Ranger: (annoyed) Are you not listening to me? I said I JOINED UP TO BE A RANGER! All we are asking for is a little attention. Why can't you spread the wealth and instead of focusing on Jedi all the time, give a little bit to all the professions. A little bit goes a long ways ya kn---
Dev: OH! That reminds me, I have to get back to work on the new Jedi Revamp. Last one didn't go as planned. Gotta get those Jedi working.
Ranger: ........I give up.
Now, I am very well aware that Jedi sell boxes. And I also know that Ranger does not. It all comes down to the almighty dollar, and lets face it folks, Ranger does not rakeit in. I'm willing to bet that there are maybe 1000 hardcore Ranger enthusiasts on all the servers combined. At 15 dollars a pop, that's $15,000 a month from the Rangers. Now, last I checked they had nearly 300,000 registered players. That comes down to $4.5 million every month. If all the Rangers were to sign off and call it quits, do you really think that that paltry $15,000 a month will be that big a deal? They would make it up with all the masses of people that will now sign up to check out the new Jedi Revamp and the space expansion.
Ranger is just very low on the totem pole of things to focus on in this game. The message I feel has been passed down from the devs to the rangers is..."Play a different profession, because this one won't be seeing the light of day for quite some time." At least not in the way we all want. I'm not angry about it. It's economics. They want to make money and need to make money to keep the game up and running. I believe the Devs, for the most part, have the noblest of intentions. They want what is best for this game, because they have put a lot of their time and effort into it and it is their baby. We all take our shots at them from time to time. Call them a plethora of names and insult them for the choices they make. We laugh at them and their apparent inability to accomplish anything other than to piss off their playerbase. I think they do their best though. I really do. And I think that, in time, Ranger will get the attention it deserves. In time.
For now, don't be upset. If you don't hear something from the Devs themselves, take it with a grain of salt.Be patient and try to remain constructive. Most importantly, just have fun. Enjoy the game for what it can offer and don't hate it for what it does not. If you are unhappy with Ranger, then just drop it. No one judges you for dropping it. And if they do, shame on them. All those who became a part of this community and joined the game to be a Ranger, whether you hold that title or not, will always be a Ranger in my eyes.
Good Journeys all.

Here is a little story, that reminds me of the devs responses.
I went to the doctor to have my 5 year physical. The next day I go back to medical and have to talk to the doctor. Here is the conversation.
Doc: Petty Officer, have a seat. I need to talk to you about your diet. Though you are in great shape and pass your physical fitness test every year, I am concerned about you cholesterol. It's not high, but it is close.
Me: Well I am working on it, my wife is Thai and is cooking very healthy, but I have told her to watch the oil she uses, and some other things. As you can see I had a physical last year for Ordnance, and my level is getting lower.
Doctor: I see that, that's very good. Now understand that some Philipino food can be high in cholesterol.
Me: Yes, I know. But I don't like that food, and my wife is Thai.
Doctor: Just tell your wife to watch how she cooks Philipino food.
Me: My wife is Thai. That means from Thailand. Not the Philipines. She doesn't cook Philipino food, she cooks Thai food.
Doctor: Do you know that Philipino food can be cooked differantly, so as to lower the level?
Me: Do you know we live in Japan? And Korean food is horrible?
Doctor: What?
Me: My wife is from THAILAND, not the PHILIPINES, that's why she doesnt cook Philipino food. It is a whole different country.
Remind you of anything?

Oh brother, its another situation where we all have to hurry up and wait.
Maybe if the ranger comunitee did something to get noticed, lik go on strike. Let those docs go out and get there own herbivore meats. If it was wide spread enough it might put a big enough kink in the system to get us some attention.
Probably wouldnt happen but hey...
LOL well we have known for a long time that we were way down the list for some attention.
But that second part about needing to lay out what we want? Dum **edit** devs never bother looking at the best that ever came from ANY of the profession communities. Outdoorsman proposal. They said they want us to the masters of outdoors and creature hunters. So the community AS A WHOLE came up with the Outdoorsman proposal. I have yet to ever see anything so comprehensive and detailed from ANY other profession. And the devs have the nerve to say we need to tell them what we want/need. Asshats!!

and then part of me goes 'But, you're a Ranger, and that's not professional...' and the thought of spamming and crashing servers just makes me want to crawl under a rock and hide... (till the camo breaks)
and then I go read the Outdoorsman props again and start thinking about heading to Naboo.
