Thread: New Ranger skill.../Calm

Have to agree with Squill. I like the idea, but wouldn't this be more of a Creature Handler skill?
I, too, like this idea but I think that would also be more of a CH skill.
Instead, why not extend the effectiveness of 'Conceal' so that when applied to oneself or otherswhile underattack, will in essence cause the Enemy to lose sight of it's prey and break off attack?
I guess that is what 'Rescue' is for, but rather than diverting the Aggro onto you, Conceal should give Rangers the ability to Lose oneself, as well as others, in a heated conflict.

Well, yeha...If you carefully read all my thoughts on this, I directly compare it to /taming...
But Doesnt CM compare to doctor?
Isnt SL's group terrain neg, similar to scout/ranger?
Master Artisans make weapon powerups, not weaponsmiths!?
Be's supply people with pets, similar to Ch's.
Marksmen use pistols, rifles and carbines, similar to carbineers, riflemen and pistoleers.
BH's have a pistol line like smugglers and pistoleers...
Im not looking to shoot a nest and put an animal in my datapad for a pet...
I'm just looking for a crowd controll mehod. Like real life. A horse trainer can calm down a spooked horse...same thing.
The game's not perfect, as it stands now, you could be flamethrowing a non-social attacker and his bud just stands there?
I understand your point of "shooting the lair and expecting to calm the beast!?"
Its all play mechanics, and it wouldnt always succeed.
I suggest re reading my idea and the follow up posts.

/sigh We have a humanoid tracking line people! ![]()
Dont you think that should be in the BH tree?
YES! It's a Ch Like skill, but you only are "confusing" the creature for like 5 seconds then the game determines if the creature continues to attack you or not... you are by no means "handling" or "taming" the creature.
If I was in a bar fight and it was mayhem, I was beating on everyone, then someone tapped me on the shoulder, then I turned around and stared UP at him and saw the size of his neck and arms, I would stand there, confused, and make my decision to walk away, or punch the dude in the face. Seeing the size of this guy, I may choose NOT to fight him....regardless of other things going on. ![]()

If they would ever implement the lure idea they talked about a long time agao, you wouldn't have to worry about getting multiple aggros since you would be able to pull creatures out singly.
Lure is an old and awesome idea. But a diferent skill alll in itself...
Lure is BEFORE the attack, BEFORE social creatures realize they are under attack...
Lure would be to pull a social non-aggro so far away from the nest that when you DO attack it...the rest of the social pack assistors DO NOT jump in and help.
/calm is for when a buddy is getting jumped, needs a /rescue, but you don't feel like fighting the creature that you have just rescued your friend from...
actually, after a successful /calm, and the creature "peaces out" and "turns yellow" again, then you could /lure it even farther away from your buddy who is trying to kill creatures one at a time...
These suggestions are based on my belief that we are Master Creature KILLERS (not handlers) and we should be able to manipulate creatures in many different ways to help facilitate their dooms and subsequent harvestings.
Rangers Kill Creatures.
Creature Handlers Kill, WITH Creatures....big difference.
FLASH!
Maybe you get /Lure at Hunting IV (Scout skill and CH prerequisite) This way Ch's AND Rangers AND Scouts can /lure, but Rangers and Ch's get better at it with creature knowledge, scouts stop at Hunting IV, and would have high failure rates)

Ok let's recap since I obviously didn't read the post well enough or what followed:
A horse trainer can calm down a spooked horse...same thing.
Horse = Creature , Horse Trainer = Creature Handler. I'm sorry what did I miss there.............
I understand your point of "shooting the lair and expecting to calm the beast!?"
So to further this point:
You shoot big ugly creature. B.U.C. and his friends all attack your friend. You use /rescue and say "Hey come eat me you big ugly creature! Over here! Get me!! Bahhhhhh!!" B.U.C. charges you for waiving the red flag in front of him, then you tuck it away and use /calm "Oh wait.....peace B.U.C....be calm...listen to Yani....let me stroke your bristley hide....."
I just have a small issue with that scenario.
Did I read it well enough that time?

OK so one bad analogy discredits my entire proposal? Sorry I dont think so. What I was trying to say was that certain professions have a relationship with animals.
With your logic you cant have 2 professions have similar skills, sorry Combat Medics...bye bye, we dont need you because Doctors can also heal.

Well that seems to be YOUR ISSUE then right? But you would have ZERO issues with that scenereo if a creature handler were doing it?
Did I read it well enough that time?
NO, frankly, you didn't.

Look Flynn all I'm saying is that just because certain professions have similarities doesn't mean we should get skills that really belong to another profession.
/calm or whatever similar type of skill this would be in dealing with creatures should go to a creature handler. Thats all.

I myself dont care for this idea.....not for the CH implication, but for the fact that if a CH fails to tame a creature he has a % chance of aggro...once it is aggro he cant try and tame it again!!
The two must parrallel.
He can--he just needs something like warningshot to get it to stop fighting.

Quoting myself for those who seem to miss things...
"It would also leave you vulnerable during the calming period, kind of like when a CH is taming a baby...
