Thread: New Ranger skill.../Calm

OK, this is basically a way to fix rescue...

This only applies to calming Non-aggresive social attackers, I'll use Lokian Gurks as an example...

Your group opens up on a Gurk, all the gurk buddies jump in... your buddy has 3 gurks on him.

You use rescue to bring one gurk off him and towards you.

Heres where you can decide to fight the gurk or /calm him down...

If /calm is successful the gurk "peaces" out of the big scuffle, until he is attacked again or the timer wears off.

I would suggest a /calming timer of 30 seconds or so before the newly "calmed" gurk decides to jump back in and help his gurk bretheren...

It would also leave you vulnerable during the calming period, kind of like when a CH is taming a baby...

They could use similar scripting...

"Whoa boy!! Take it easy!"

"I'm not gonna hurt you." (liar)

"Calm down, It'll be Ok..."

You have successfully calmed the gurk. or...

calming has failed and the gurk rips your head off (gets a bonus to hit or something)

Now, if the calm timer wears down, and the newly calmed gurk doesnt detect you attacking his family, he stays permanently calm. (reset basically)

This would give rangers a reason to use rescue.

I like it! Would it work on multiple creatures?

I would have to say no.

Only because I'm selling it as very similar to Ch's taming animations, and scripting.

But I think it would need to occur faster that a tame session.

The creature would (upon approaching you) not attck you.

He would be pulled by the rescue and basically "come over and see what you wanted"

He would basically be sizing you up as you are attempting to /calm him (Not attacking you)

So basically you are guaranteeing the creature is at least "temporarily calm" until the /calm session has ended, then the decision is made by the creature to "be calm" or attack you...(with a bonus to hit you for your failed attempt)

So, /rescue would be adjusted to pull the creature (as it is now) BUT the creature WILL NOT ATTACK upon approaching you, you then have like 5 seconds of him being "curious" (kinda like threaten shot or warning temporarily confuses the creatures, but instead of running in circles, they would run to you and stand in front of you "sizing you up") THEN after that 5 second /rescue pull/distration period, you decide to fight or initiate /calm. (or if you dont attack or initiate /calm after that 5 seconds, the creature obviously continues to attack you)

So, I would say no to multiple creatures BUT, you could sell me on multiple creatures at MASTER!

I guess if you time /rescue properly and pull 3 gurks to you and catch them all in their 5 second "confusion/sizing you up" you could initiate a group /calming session. "Ok, everyone listen up, it's time to chill out!"

You would get calming bonuses up the rescue tree for each level until master that would directly relate to the creature CL

Cool - the group calm was what I was imagining. It would be hard to calm one I think if the two others were busy chewing on me.

Well, about being attacked by more than one at a time, that's the breaks.

If you are soloing it probably wouldn't be a great tool to rely on, until the proposed master level.

Because solo, you would be the only one aggroing the social pack, so, /calming ONE wouldn't cut it.

But it's a skill like a riflrmans /cover that couldn't always be effective if you are discovered or in this case outnumbered.

I think if proper and timely use were implemented it would be an awesome creature control device.

BTW, does rescue have an animation associated with it? ( I could be dreaming but I thought it was the /hail animation, if not it should be)

Basically, I'd like to /rescue be usefull in combat. Ideas that have given me hope is damage taken to a creature during the calm, or the creature becoming confused and delaying it's next attack round by 10 seconds (maybe stepping on some toes, but the difference here is that no matter how far away you are, the creature will attack you, as opposed to traditional combat which forces the creature into attacking the closest enemy).

But yes, this idea works too...although I DO like a group calm idea...of course THAT would be a Master Ranger ability. An entire group /calmed...just in case a lair spawns in front of you unexpectedly...I can't even begin to tell you how many times I've been incapped/db'd 'cause of something like that.

So yeah. Cool idea. Keep 'em coming.

That was my thought exactly.

Why would anyone CHOOSE to be attacked? Especially since rangers are not a combat class!

So we need something to do AFTER we /rescue the person...which is to /calm the creature...

I think all the programming is already there.

I support this for sure. Nice little additive to make that whole rescue command somewhat worthy.

as an avid supporter of /rescue changes... and someone who once said "ooh, /animalcalm... i have got to get me some of that!"... i don't suppose i really have much to add/say here...

oh, but i did save a jedi's life with /rescue just the other day (i then proceeded to use my burstrun and terrain negotiation to outrun theenraged bull,4 mutants, and 2 regular rancors - while he ran the other direction)... so it does have some use, even if it will get you killed if you don't use your other skills to high-tail it...

I like the idea, a lot. I would also like to see this work in reverse, target an NPC or Creature and /agro and this would help put other NPC's and Creatures in the area into batle with what you have targeted.....

Its not practical a Ranger has knowledge of a creature but you shouldn't be able to calm a creature down while your shooting his lair or other groups if it is a sociable creature. Just like taming doesn't work when a creature has been aggroed and aggrivated. Rescue IMO just shouldn't be in the Ranger tree. Granted we have burst run but if you take a solo out ranger as you only profession you have no fighting skills what so ever to trying and tanking a creature. Also IMO a ranger shouldn't be out there in armor anyway (like a crafter with armor on whats the point). I know you all will say well you got 250 skill points but Devs and players can't look at it that way if there is to truely be a rebalance. If anything Trapping is the Key to all your problems with rescue. Need A ranger trap that when you use /rescue and the creature comes to you you can net or cage him or something that put a delay of least 30 seconds or more on him depending on the level of the creature and what the quality of the trap was. Thats just a suggestion I'm sure it could be tweaked out and made better if there was more input for many people, but /Calm in my opinion just doesn't seem to fit the skill of a ranger (maybe somethingthey can add to creature handler though).

Just My 2 cents:
