Thread: The end of all things......

I remember reading about a guy who spent a year living off of money earned from selling items from an MMORPG.

I don't like the idea of this sanctioned sale of in game items.

Before SWG I played MtGO, where you buy and sell boosters, decks, and even cards. The whole mentality was ... I won't trade I will only sell.

Certain items in this kind of Cash for bytes artifical economy will simply not be available to players interested in the RPG aspect of the game.

This move is the ultimate dumbing down of MMORGPs. There's no more immersion on servers like this. Instead, we are talking purely about "modding" your in game character not building it or enjoying it.

While I agree, the items bought and sold in game should belong to players, I don't think its fare to the game to dumb it down in this fashion.

And the more I think about, the more it disgusts me. I gave them a pretty candid piece of mind on the feedback thread. The only thing that shows there is still some hope is that they haven't actually done it yet.

Fair enough. It will bother you in the long run though, when the economy turns upside down because people that can afford to buy all the things us "normal" players will try to earn. The trade forums are already ridiculous. Make no mistake, the player driven economy is one of the best things SWG has going for it (certainly not the CU but I digress) even though the economy is somewhat lol inflated.

I just cannot see a good end to this gang.

I had already posted my comments there before reading this thread - I think it is a terrible idea if they are opening up the sale of items for real life cash.

but it is also inevitable - SOE and LucasArts will not let anyone else make money out of this game, and there is no real way of stopping the ebay sales (and other sites) so they have to legitimise it.

Unfortunately by opening this up to the masses, it will cheapen the game, mean every POI is camped night and day and generally ruin the game for everyone else.

I had ordered a 3rd account, but as it was delayed and I got the offer of a refund, I took the refund.

I may decide to drop down to a single account soon and just log on to do shipwright stuff for my guild .... if there's anyone left in it ....
What with the fundamental CU changes and now this, I might have to retire Tony after mastering Ranger and hiking round Kashyyyk untill I've seen all the sights.

I thinkit just shows that they are trying it on EQ2 first. If the system works, they will use it for their other games aswell. Not that I like that, but like it was said before, SOE want's a piece of the profit.

I like the fact that ifI decide to quit playing a game thatI can sell out.

I remember Ultima Online, great game in its time. I never paid for anything but the account subscription but whenI quitI just sold my name and pasword for $1175. Pretty sweet deal if you ask me. It doesnt ruin a game at all. People were freewheeling in UO but you didn't need to use RL cash to get the uber items/rares. Hard work in-game pays off too.

Anyone who opposes it is an idealist not a realist. It was in UO and every game that was a sucesss therafter. A healthy Ebay market is a sign of a healthy game nuff said.

Before you get to upset with this, look closely at what it says. They will make special servers for this and only those who wish this kind of possibility, and play solely on these servers, will have to honestly deal with this.

So on our normal servers (and so far they are only talking about EQ2) they will still have the same standing policy. So if you and I don't want this on our servers (at least no more than is already going on illegally) then we will play on "clean" servers. You would have to chose this option and you will have to play on those specific servers. So unless they changed it to allow it on any and all servers this is really not a problem for you and I. So don't get to upset about it at this time.

Ok good to see many of us on the same page with this. Calc' and Agon's responses were particularly well written. Keep posting your thoughts on this folks. Even if they do think it will be limited to a certain server, I hate this idea and want it to go away badly. WildBil's comments about the game being dumbed down as a result were spot on.

You know, crafters like Weaponsmiths and Armorsmiths and Shipwrights have said that their profession is gradually becoming more like a second job.

Now, it really can be a second job.

Currently SOE sees some revenue go to Ebay, that could be going to them. So what makes anyone think, that anything we can say will change anything? I think this feature will be coming to SWG in one form or other.
My personal concern is that far more people will start selling in game items for real-life money. And as such more people will be compelled to achieve in game property by any means necessary.
