There are certain pieces of comp and other armor that do not need to be worn during PvE because creature simply never hit there. Does anyone know what these "not necessary" armor pieces are for PvE?
All creatures (and NPCs) hit all areas. There are only 4 areas - Head, Body, Arm, Leg.
You can be equally protected by a full suit of composite as you can with composite helmet, chest, gloves (covers Arm hit), and boots (covers Leg hit). The difference is how fast your armor wears down.
Since damage (and condition reduction) is distributed among the pieces of armor you have on that body part, your armor will wear out faster with the 4 piece suit. So those other pieces aren't exactly "unecessary" since they're protecting you longer before needing repair.
As for the original question, it's not so much about rangers and armor as it is about your combat profession and armor. I'm a master rifleman, so unless I'm PvPing, I don't bother with any armor at all since it just reduces my HAM - especially mind. Usually, nothing gets within melee damage range.
For swords or melee professions, composite or Ubese with high kinetic resists works best for PvE. Ubese offers high kinetic resist @ usually less HAM than composite.

I agree with Kimi here. When wook armor first came out I was sooooo excited. Then I realized it just made me drink my mind faster as a Master Rifleman so I dont wear it. However, on TC where I am still leveling rifleman - and therefore still getting noticed and chased down - I keep my armor in my hotkeys to throw on while I am running and throwing adhesive meshes and healing like mad.

i've actually got a set of 80% kinetic green padded that i wear and i love it (i traded it for a stack of wooly a while back). not only is it not what everyone else and their brother and sister and mother and father are wearing, but i don't think it looks too bad either.

I've never really looked into the stats on padded so I didn't know you could get resists that high on it. I definitely know that I like the look of it though.

Right now I'm working on a killer pair of bone armor (yeah, you read that right, BONE armor). If everything goes according to plan, I should be able to secure the pants, helm, boots, chest, and leggings with a HAM cost of around 10 or less (once again, you read that right).
It is designed to have a high energy resistance and to have maybe 4% or so to kinetic. That way if the animal has AP0 (as most do), they will get the negative damage modifier.

Wow! /boggle How does the encumberance compare to Composite on that? Yikes!

it's comparable....i've got a 183/95/54 encumbrance on mine. however, it's also 60% base (except 28% to blast), so it's not a bad alternative.

I looked into this a little bit last week on the armorsmith forum.....
Two suggestions were:
1)Night sister shard mabari - made by a good 12 pointer.....this is apparently nearly weightless!
(seriously)
2)If u can find someone who can make (good) Tantel i believe it can reach 40%(?more) kinetic with
NO vulnerabiltes. Its again super-light (and under-rated) but only covers Head,Chest &Feet.
Both the above give light armor protection with some resists and are VERY-LOW HAM. Obviously aimed
at unbuffed/food buffed fighters with some brains and tactics though
P.S. The no armor approach saves u the difficulty in finding/commissioning the above - which in the
comp/ubese world may be tricky......

I saw the words Ranger and Armour in the same post title, and couldnt help but jump in and gush about how wonderfull my custom made Master Ranger Armour is. Its green and brown Padded Armour, I specifically didnt want composite as thats a bit passé. Its got 80% kenetic resistant, which is plenty for Creature combat, with 50% Energy, Electricity and a number of other nice things. Light enough to wear unbuffed, and I look damn fine strutting through Coronet like I own the place. Only downside is the cruddy looking helmet, and I have that macroed so I can take it off quickly if I see someone.

80% kinetic and light enough to wear unbuffed huh?
*wipes drool of monitor*
So um, any special secrets to making this armor? Exactly what required resource stats are we talking about?

Good Wooly, Scaley and Lokian Leather hide... Plus good Yavin wooly hide for the segments. There hasn't been a good Yavin Wooly hide spawn on our server since mid summer.

How good is good though? Do OQ and SR need to be in the 900s or close to the 1000 mark for it to be worth it if you are trying to hit 80%?
