Thread: We need a hunting rifle unique to Rangers
It would be like giving Rifleman traps, and how would Rangers react to that?
And as many people have said, the Ranger is not a combat class.
We have a creature to-hit bonus. Taking two players, all things being equal except one is a Master Ranger, then there should be a significant difference in the Master Ranger's ability to hit a creature over the non-Master Ranger. Taking the same two players against NPCs, there should be no difference.
How is the performance of the creature to-hit bonus? Does it seem to be working?
I have never noticed the Creature To-Hit Bonus to do anything worthwhile.
I have had pretty much the same weapon skills since I started on the Ranger path and I've noticed no difference in how often I hit creatures vs humanoids.
Also with the +10 Melee and Ranged Defense Bonus at Master Ranger, I've never ever successfully +Dodged+ or +Counterattacked+ or performed any sort of evasion while using my rifle.
Making the Ranger a better hunter can be done within the Scout/Ranger skills. For instance:
Turn up the added accuracy/damage Scouts and Rangers do to creatures as a result of their hunting skills.
LetRanger'scrafta hunting blind camp that provides tremendous concealment advantages to a prone, stationary hunter.
And here's one that's more radical:
Give the Ranger a special move that acts like a more powerful warning shot on creatures only - but maybe without using a weapon - maybe it does no damage but works better and more reliably at keeping creatures at bay. Rangers know what scares creatures, after all. A ranger who can imitate the calls of larger creatures may be able to scare things away. Or maybe Rangers know where to shoot a creature to make it really feel pain. This kind of skill would make Rangers the kings of keeping creatures out of tooth-and-claw range.
"Or maybe Rangers know where to shoot a creature to make it really feel pain."
- This one has been suggested as a Critical Hit form of attack based onthe Creature-to-Hit factor, and is listed in the State of the Porfession list available via my signature. ![]()

Heheh, mesa no think so.
Hehe. This is one of those quotes taken from Holo. He stated that no players should be able to "solo" a red star con. Even with pets. He did state this a while ago and I'm unsure if he has changed his position. I think his intention was to balance the game to make it so that solo players (with pets) could not kill red cons. At all.
That would kind of suck because there are a LOT of creatures that are red for me even on the starting planets. Bull tontos are red cons but I can take them out because they don't group and I've got an equally large sized-tank holding him back and doing damage to him. So, although I feel Holo's statement is wrong, it was something that he did make implying that they were working to balance the game out so his statement would be true.
Keep in mind, the color-coded "con" system is a relative system. So, we shouldn't technically be saying "Rangers should be able to solo red cons". What we should be saying is:
"Some things should con Yellow to Rangers that normall con Red to others."
And they should con Yellow to Rangers because the Ranger has a chance of soloing the creature that other players don't.
Wording it this way satisfies everyone, including Holo and his "no soloing red cons" quote.
Of course, there should always be a few things in the game that con red even to Rangers.
Ranger: "Hmm. Krayt Dragon. I'll need to round up a group of marksmen to help me out on this one. Or maybe just another Ranger."
I would much rather see a dart gun that shoots scout and ranger traps...the effect would be to increase the success rate of traps, and to give weaponsmiths something else to craft, thus stimulating the economy. Turning us into a combat profession is not a good idea, for reasons posted above.
Jamga Gibbrad
Master Ranger
Novice Pistoleer
Novice Medic
This is an interesting concept.
I find that in a small group, with a good Ranger who is on top of providing the proper info to a well equipped group makes all the difference.
All those pluses to creature knowledge helps us kill stuff that normal people cannot kill. We call out resists and specials, and good smart players know how to counter.
As a solo effort, I have trouble since they adjusted suppression fire. As much as I hate to say it, once my Grand Wrix grows I should be able to do much more, but I won't really be solo.
I don't think it would be so bad for Rangers to have a special weapon, but it would have to satisfy all of the weapon type professions. I am a Pistoleer, but a special Ranger pistol just doesn't seem to sound right. A Rifle makes tons more sense. ![]()

- Neither does a Ranger Vibro Knuckler. ![]()

How about instead of a hunting rifle, we get a bow? We could craft our own arrows and maybe even merge our traps with our quivers of arrows. Both would have to be equiped and we would have to switch between hunting arrows and traped arrows. The bows could do something like 200-300 damage with around a 6 speed, but do double or triple damage to creatures (to avoid that whole PvP issue). Also, since it is not a Pistol, Carbine or Rifle, the only to-hit bonus we would get would be the creature to-hit. The specials with the bow would just be the ability to use our traps with them.
That sounds like a great idea. I love the immersiveness an idea like that presents. Plenty of potential issues with the crafting of the arrows and the bows. How can a Ranger experiment a Bow up to snuff on creatures that have high resists, or Light to Medium Armor..
Either way, I love that idea.
