Just a basic thought of the sort of post to make:

Dear [insert profession name here]:

The current availability of organic resources is very limited. This has led to crafters needing to offer insane amounts of money for resources they need to produce the best goods. As it stands now, a combat oriented character with Novice Scout is able to harvest more than a Master Ranger. This isbecause they can kill creatures much faster and the harvesting bonus gained at Master Ranger only allows a player to harvest about twice as much as a Novice Scout [ed note: This really needs to be tested better before we send something like this out. Is there anyone who can easily test this? I've been having a lot of trouble getting together with a Novice Scout on my server]. This means that the person who would like to sell you resources on a more regular basis (and is therefore likely to have invested more skill points into a Scout related profession) is unable to provide you with the resources you need.

The Ranger [and Scout--let us know if the scouts want to join us on this, Delta] [community /communities][is / are] asking for your help. We realize that developer time is extremely limited and are therefore only asking for minor changes at the present time. To this end, we would like to know if your community is willing to support us in a push to increase the effectiveness of the harvesting [and trapping] skill mod[s] to help us supply you with the resources you need. This is not a solution to the problem but it should help until a proper pass of the Ranger and Scout professions can be performed. [Name] will attempt to follow this thread and answer any questions you might have. Please support us in this push.

Sincerely,

The [Scout and] Ranger Correspondent[s]

The post above is just a suggestion. Please make suggestions and alterations to improve it. I just threw it up as a starting point. As for actually posting the message, I would feel best if the Ranger and Scout (if Delta is willing) correspondents could make the actual posts. And ask the correspondents of the respective forums to sticky it. The additional Rangers (and potentially Scouts) would be there to monitor the thread and help answer any questions the posters might have. Also, can anyone add bullets to that message (in honor of NRaas)? It almost would feel wrong without them.

the letter looks good enough maybe if we put specific data on the diff amoutns that we harvest would be better and also mention that the number of scouts went down cause of the last publish ??

and k for the posting ill keep a good eye on the one of my server though

We don't need to say anything about price fixing. Most of the high cpu offers are given by the crafters anyway. What we are asking for is a way to increase supply. By increasing supply, the crafters won't need to offer so much anymore (as there will be enough to go around anyway). The main problem right now is that organic resources are hard to come by. The people who might normally be interested in getting them (some Rangers and Scouts) can't keep up with the demand. Crafters are offering lots of money to try and pull people away from doing other things (like running BH missions or camping spawns in caves) and getting them to hunt down the resources. If the harvesting rate is increased, there will be less need to offer high prices to get the resources. While Rangers and Scouts could still sell at high prices, the crafters could just go to someone a little more reasonable. And the people still wanting 200cpu won't be able to sell the stuff at that price (making them lower their price if they want any money at all).

Maybe pricefixing isn't the right word to use, but aren't we talking about the same issue, just from different sides of the transaction. The end result being ceasation of inflation across all servers. One side being rangers/scouts lowering there prices they ask for there resources and crafters offer to pay less to obtain resources. This would have the dual effect of stoping inflation and garnering support for the Ranger cause. Maybe on the ranger side adopting a standard pricing agreement, or call it a union agreement with the crafters.

Such a promise can't be kept. There is no way for us to make a promise for anyone in game. There are plenty of people out there that would never know that the promise existed, much less follow it. What this change does is it removes the need for a crafter to offer insane prices to get any resources. If someone goes up to a crafter after this patch and asks them for 200 cpu then the crafter can laugh in their face. Right now, crafters have to put up with this because they need the resources. If we double the resource flow then there is much less of a bottleneck. It still won't be easy to get everything they need but at least we'll have a chance. Even now there are people who don't charge insane prices. I give most of my stuff away to my friends. But I can't even supply them with the resources they need, much less so for a server full of crafters. The simple fact of the matter is that more resources can only help the situation. And most crafters should realize that. Especially when the crafters are the ones putting out the contracts at 200 cpu to begin with. They do it because they won't get the resources they want unless they pay that or they pick up scout and harvest it themselves. This should let them get the resources they want much more easily and cheaply. But we can't and shouldn't speak for all the people who have any amount of Scout in the game.

Nemo,

As currently you're the only person to have noticed this MR = 2x NS harvesting, and have been unable to further research it, I think we should stick to the relatively solid ~30% increase from MS to MR.

Also, further emphasis, and perhaps a little detail, on how price inflation works. Many, many crafters are of the impression that the majority of Rangers are demanding the high prices, rather than the price being dictated by the buyer. Likewise, further explanation on how the buyer can help bring prices down by refusing, when the supply begins to better meet the demand, to pay those higher prices would be useful. Doing this in such a way that it doesn't seem like we're laying the blame will be tricky, but will be invaluable in establishing a causal link between more resources harvested and lowering prices. Done well, it should be very effective in garnering support.

Also, though I see, from your earlier comment, where increased trap accuracy (for lack of a better term) would be beneficial to the crafters, it's not obvious. Most people who've dabbled in scout, or mastered it purely to go BH, have no idea of the usefulness of traps. Further explanation on how the ability to use our traps more reliably, esp. on larger creatures, will increase our ability to harvest will help sway them.

Basically you've got a great core to the write-up there. We just need a bit more detail, and a stronger spin toward our target audience.

My problem is I was trying to keep it short and to the point. It might be worth breaking it into 2 seperate parts, then. Underneath the main post, we add some bullets. These bullets go into more detail on the specific points. I'll try and come up with a few ideas for that. As for the MR = 2x NS, I tested it reasonably thoroughly on low level mobs (the highest was a giant carrion spat at CL 19, many lower mobs were tried as well). I just can't get any numbers on high level mobs on my own and I haven't been able to get together with another Novice Scout recently. I would try on another server but I wouldn't be able to kill the high level creatures anyway. If I (or someone else) can't get more data on this before we get a correspondent, I am willing to change it to the increase over Master Scout. But the argument is not quite as effective then (it points more directly at the BHs and we don't want to drag them into a flame war).

The following points are addedin anattempt to better explain the situation

  • Crafters need high quality resources to continue their businesses. Because of a lack of resources, crafters are forced to pay enormous amounts of money for these resources.

  • The lack of resources is largely due to the professional harvesters (mainly high level scouts and rangers) getting very little benefit from their skills.

  • Currently, a Master Ranger gets about twice the resources of a Novice Scout (with a 125 skill point cost difference).

  • Currently, a Master Ranger gets about 30% more resources than a Master Scout (with a 63 skill point cost difference).

  • Spending skill points in Scout and Ranger means that the Scout or Ranger can not spend those points on combat skills.

  • Someone that spends most of their skill points on combat skills and relatively few on a Scouting related profession can harvest much more than a dedicated Scout or Ranger because they can kill larger creatures much more easily.

  • Trapping skills are designed to assist the Ranger or Scout in killing their prey. Some of the traps do provide useful effects but they hit very rarely on any target for which most Scouts or Rangers would need them for.

  • If the effectiveness of the Trapping and Creature Harvesting skill mods was increased then Scouts and Rangers would be better able to supply crafters with the resources they need.

  • Given the extra supply provided by such an increase, it is likely that crafters would no longer need to offer such high bounties on organic resources in order to get what they want.

  • Such a solution is only a partial fix. Scouts and Rangers will still have many problems but these changes should help increase the general supply of resources and help to mitigate the inflation present in most servers' economies.

My primary account is a Master Armorsmith/DE/Artisan and at one time I wrote a post concerning what Armorsmiths were looking for as far as resource stats were concerned. My secondary account is rapidly approaching Master Rifleman/Ranger, and so I can see this issue from both sides.

I think a better idea would be to have the Ranger correspondant PM the crafter correspondants with this issue, and have the correspondants bring the idea up to thier constituancy.....

In this way the crafting communities might be more open to Ranger being fixed instead of saying "us first"...

With the proposal as it currently is written, I don't see many crafters giving the fix us first response (as we are no longer even trying to ask for any big changes, only that the devs up the effectiveness of our mods which should only be a very small change). Given that, I would feel better having the Ranger or Scout correspondent responsible for making the post as it gives us some level of control over it. If it is sent to the profession correspondent, the post would probably be changed a bit. This could lead to a slightly different post than what we were looking for and possibly give the wrong impression of our profession. It also causes a need for more work for the correspondents and would almost certainly add a delay to this being posted. Looking at the proposed information to be posted, do you really think crafters would start a big argument? And, if so, do you think having it posted by their correspondent would really change that view? I really don't know (as this is the only forum I regularly visit) but I find it hard to believe that people would have a lot of complaints on this. It doesn't step on anyone's toes, it tries to help all the people who whould be reading it (the only people who wouldn't like it are those who really want to sell resources at 200 cpu or more), and it shouldn't take very long to change. Please give us some insight into this. It really would be useful to know a bit more about the other forums before deciding on the best course of action. I just thought the proposed plan would be quick, straightforward, and maturely handled. If it would really help our cause to delay the posting a bit and let the crafters control it, then we should look into it.
