Thread: Please support this idea for bringing back bio-farms which benefit Scouts/Rangers (link inside)

Nope, this would kill us economically.

You want what we get, you pay us. So freaking sorry more people can't harvest. As it is we are getting screwed without getting kissed, as most artisans pay us 1% of the final cost of an item. Tailors pay 3 cpu and turn out how many 5k shirts?

As it is now, between the shortage in hunters and the grinders, I am finally making money. You want to start a farm to compete....sorry bout that. Best hope those animals are pets, cuz if they are targets they are mine.

Trophies, phooey. All this is is an attempt to get cheap stuff that BEs need and don't/won't pay for. Theya re too frigging lazy to hunt for themselves, and won't pay us to do it.

Screw this idea and the Bio-engineered kaadu it rode in on.

"so much for being nice."

Well... This debate has certainly hit close to heart among the professional hunters in the community.

"Perhaps it could be something thatcan be added to the camping line where it is a farm structure?"

Even if the bio-farm is left specific to Rangers, the idea of turning the profession into a "farmer" profession tends to negative reaction to members in the community who enjoy hunting exclusively.

I recall the controversy when I tried to add the Harvester Trap proposal to one of the Top 5 reports. Eventually the item had to be dropped to get the report out.

It still exists in the SotP though.

Yes im sure but I dont see him coming in here guns flaming. we could at theveryleast respond to him the same way that he has in approaching us. Im not saying that this reflects the entire ranger group either, because there are posts on this which are constructive in that discussion and that is good because it reflects the objectivity and mentalityof the ranger community.

If you or any other ranger were to suggest something on the same level and mannerin the BE forum and the like was directed at you, i'd say the same thing to fellow bio engineers. why? because coming to a group of people with an openapproach does not deserve a slap in the face, period.

Sure i can understand that we dont want to be a farmer profession but sadly, arent we that already as player harvesters? we can put out all the conceptual emotive values of the class but bring it down to the bare bones and what are we reallyat the moment? Even if such an idea was implimented, wouldit reallyhinder those that prefer to hunt instead of compliment? it could always be worked out that the yield on a ranger harvester object/structure/trap is alot lower than going out to hunt and harvest on your own but what it could give us as rangers, is the ability to harvest a few things at once. we can hunt say pikets for their hide, trap or harvest avian meat in coronet concurrently. more harvest for us at the end of the day. Price of resources is already well explainedby you on that thread.

Dont get me wrong either when i mention what i think we are at the moment. I love the idea of beng a ranger and i long for the concept of the outdoorsman. i know its really about being patient. hopefully one day we will all realise the vision and enjoy its implimentation.

But personally, i do feel that the trap harvester orranger farm harvesterconcept is a good one and would make a good compliment to what we can already do, even in the event of the hopefully implimented outdoorsman vision.

I think most people in this thread offerred the same solution: Give Rangers the ablility to harvest more both in items simultaneously and in greater yield. I believe this would solve half the issue. The other half is getting the BE community to hire Rangers/scouts just like chefs, docs, combat medics, and armorsmiths do. I've only seen a couple BEs post on the Corbantis trade forum about getting meat and most are paying 2-3 cpu for grind quality meat so they can get through it quickly. That's not worth my time.

Maybe another option would be to allow BEs to harvest after they sample-kill an animal. I never understood why the animal was not able to be harvested after being pricked with a needle.

Don't worry, Rangers, I'm with you on the "this could ruin us" bit. I think instead we should focus in these issues:

  • Harvest Output. 20% bump is not going to fix this, more like 10 times increase.
  • Harvest all of the creature. This should have been done yesterday. I have not been trying not to push this because, like much of our stuff, we had a "once over" already and what remains takes significant mods to the code. There are other profs waiting for "love".
  • Exactly why are there so few of us? I don't mean the Holo-slaves, I mean the ones that stay. Masters. Perhaps a more indepth look at that should be done.

I couldn't agree more: from a Ranger perspective, creature farms are a bad idea. I'm sure the BE people want this a great deal considering creature food is the main limiting factor for their products. But this would create yet another feature which bypasses or reduces reasons for being a Ranger.

Code issues aside, it makes perfect sense for Rangers to be able to harvest *all* resources from a creature. That would definitely be a nice perk to separate Rangers from Scouts. And I've said this many times, Rangers should 1) be immune to the group harvest penalty and 2) have their harvest percentage boosted.

The only thing I do not agree with is the "get in line" attitude that pervades the Ranger forum. In my mind, we're here to promote our profession. And as I watch the publishes go by and see more and more bits and pieces overtake Ranger, I'm getting a little concerned about when exactly are we are going to stop the "we're not broken" and start on the "hey, we need some love too!" Let the developers make decisions on which profession gets priority on any given publish, that's not our job.

Interesting thinking, but I don't like the idea. I became/remain a scout/ranger mainly because I like hunting creatures and harvesting and selling their resources. If the profession became essentially farming, I would probably drop scout/ranger.

I frankly don't see where it's that hard for docs/BEs/armorsmiths to get the resources they need at reasonable prices. Hell, I give away more meat and hideto guild-matesthan I sell because I have millions of credits and don't really need more. They, in return, give me as much buffs, heals and armor as I need. If I ever ran low on cash, Icould make a bundle fast. The key to having a ready, cheap supply of resources is to make friends with rangers. Join a guild. Offer something useful in return. You'll be surprised how accomodating we rangers can be.

I think part of the problem up until now is that with the CH revamp, there isn't as much demand for pets as there used to be. BEs have lost a source of revenue and so they can't afford to spend as much on resources as, say, ASs. But with the new chef schematics and the ability to enhance food with BE attachments, there's a whole new market out there that will generate lots of credits.

Hey all,

Im a master ranger and I have just spent the past few days hunting Avian meat on Talus.. I sold a 10k stack for half a million credits , and yes it was a complete pain to harvest (i run on scylla btw).

The idea which you guys are talking about , the hravesting and farming of organic resources , is a very dangerous one. And seems to be one which could put me out of buisness, meaning I would instantly drop the Ranger profession and take up harvestind massive quantities of organics and inorganic materials, thus flooding the market with them and forcing the price down on the market.. The only thing which keeps me in money and fine armour/weapons is the fact that organics are hard to get and as most of you say master rangers/hunters are few..

I hold with the idea of giving master rangers (and only master rangers) the ability to hunt hide, meat and bone from a single creature should it drop all three, not just a selected single resource. This would give me something more to wow about with my professional masterythan "Oh yeah look, I can make a dath camo kit" It would clearly set aside a ranger from hutners and scouts and I dont think it would be wise to give this skill to anyone but a master ranger, as this could also poison the economy..

I also think that the scouts and hunters deserve something too so increasing the drop on animals when you gain more + to harvesting would be a nice bonus, and also offer an incentive for them to continue in that line eventually making master ranger perhaps someday or just taking ranger tracking to IV.

Here are some other things which would be nice.

- Ranger Spyglass = Or something like that , you get it, you buy/make/find one then stick it to your eye when you do area track and it will increase the range of the track.

- High Tech Field Base BF Heal = Nuff said , although I never really have had an entertainer in one of mine, but I don't think it works.

-Forage = The higher you go , the better stuff you forage (foods with temp buffs of course).. At the moment I can find the same things as a master ranger as I could as a novice scout.. and to be honest it doesn't seem to succeed any more now than it did before. All I have noticed is that it says "Items discarded , inventory full" or whatever alot more often making me think I shouldnt bother (which i generally dont). Also something to allow me to cook up some kind of broth with all my foraged goodies which gives me a bit of a better buff than the individual goods I pick up.

- Metal Detector = Heheheh, i just had a thought , how about a metal detector for rangers or some scouting lvl, once you get the skill you can detect then forage at a precise spot for something like a locked container or combat knife.. Anything metal. Stupid idea but could be fun if done right. I think forage is a weak skill at best as you know. I would love to spend a few hours with a few cans hunting around with a metal detector , but then again I have too much time on my hands and love this game too much.

- Conseal / ( Lure ? )= This works, and thats about it. Currently I have no reason to use camo kits.. No-one I know wants to buy camo kits. People really never even ask about them unless I accidentally drop one in a trade window. How about changing this a little ? I have a cunning plan, instead of hiding you from creatures. . . Why not let the ranger wayfaring tree unlock your camo kits, and also (or instead of)a 'lure kit' which would allow you to attract certain creatures when applied ... Kind of like rubbing your self in honey and standing in a field- things are gonna come sniffing , apply them then depending on the planet and creature resources used they will spawn different creatures more frequently in your area while the 'lure' is in effect as those creatures naturally prey on the creatures you made the lure from ??

- Rescue = It sucks, but I really dont think anything can be done with this skill anyway. To me its useless.

- Tracking = One more thing which would be quite funky I think is for the ranger to have the ability to area track every creature around.. When I say this I know I don't cause confusion .... how can I put my hand to my head and see nothing in 500m , then walk 30m and have something appear at 128m... Thats a fast little critter !.. Spawns etc, whatever it should be fixed so rangers can see what is really out there and not just what everyone else has walked past and activated.

Maybe not new ideas , Maybe you didn't want to know , But the lure one is my idea =) And i think it makes sense.

- MY VOTE - That only hunters should be able to hunt... If people who arent hunters could hunt, why should I be a hunter ? What incentive do I even have to be a master ranger if not to make more money out of the goods I have chosen to harvest since I started the game.. If it ends up BE's can harvest resources from creatures in the wild without any harvest skill, or farm animals and harvest from them.. The ranger profession WILL lose AT LEAST one master ranger (me) because I will just become a farmer and sit here in work writing posts on the forums in the safe knowledge that when Ireturn home I will havea nice 100k stack of organics at my disposal.

The idea has merit and an alternate means for Rangers to make cash if they are so inclined. I can accept the idea as long as it is a Ranger only Farm. The CH taming twist definitely has merit as well. It would be beneficial for both and at the same time allow for faster harvests of things like Avian meats. Just like Camo kits, it would be a Rangers perogative to utilize the thing which doesnt mean that Rangers actually become farmers.......it just means it gives us other avenues and opportunities.

What was stated earlier about the "I'm not broke attitude" has merit as well. It is quite the common attitude of late and I hope we dont cut our own throats by bumping ourselves to the bottom of the list. Its my opinion, which is like an arse....everyone has one

Picasso the answer is simple.

You said it - Go harvest yourself. Of course your scout level harvesting sucks, and you have to travel to find good stuff, and by your signature you have combat skills to actually kill things, but hey - if you "can't afford" to pay a fair price for the resources I have to risk my azz for - there is your solution. Oh, and it takes time, lots of time, so you can forget watching your factories chug out profit, as you will actually be freaking working.

The farm is nothing more than a way to allow BEs cheap resources. It's total BS, as the people who actively gather resources will be hosed by your ability to sell at low prices.

And a profit of 240k on a run of items where you do basically nothing but plug the stuff into a machine - good money for no risk. Heck yeah that is gouging.I am happy I can sell my organics for what it costs me in travel and stims some days. Quit whining, you are making 1.2 million per factory run. Glad to know that, my prices just went up, see if that 240k profit doesn't shrink some. Your profit margin is like 20%, not a bad hours work.

I don't wear mod'd clothes, too freaking expensive. I don't have a BE pet, again, out of my price range. So what can you do for me - nothing.

Go harvest yourself. See how much work it is, finding the animals on Dathomir and Endor. Hope you have a nice time, don't get eaten.

Ok here is the my view on this part, I don't flame and whoever flamed you doesnt speak for all rangers. Secondly I have sold resources from10 to 50cpu (5cpu for grind) depending on the resource.. And I DON'T charge 50cpu , I let people pay me 50cpu , and there is a BIG difference. If I sit in coronet and shout"selling 20k Ario lethery hide pre-shift -PST with offers" and I got two responses , one saying 5cpu and one saying 50cpu its pretty obvious which one I am going to take. Plus you shouldnt generalise that you can gather 20k of resource in one day, because in some cases you can't its just not possible! Take hunting Avian meat on Talus, if I didn't get up from my chair and played for 24 hours solid I might be able to harvest a 20k stack of avian....Do you then think I would charge 10cpu for it ? 200,000c for 24 hours solid gameplay..Thats actually worse than your profit margin before the discount , which then would increase x3 when i sold it to you!

currently broad pectrum nutrients are what most of us are making and on my server these sell for 30k per crate of 25 ,40 crates per run ,each run requires 20k meat and 60k of flora so for one run my cost are 600k for meat and 360k for flora =960k at 30k per crate x 40 crate= 1.2 mill so my profit for all that is 240k am i a gouger am i ripping people off thats the lowest profit margin i think in the game on any proffesion honestly its not worth it considering i takes a factory 2 days to make the dam things .when i posted on the ranger forum i was looking to establish a long term contract ie a ranger buddy i offerd to pay fair prices as well as all the be perks i could instead i was insulted /

Ok, as for this , fair point .. I wouldnt do a run of goods which sold for 1.2 million but I only made 240k profit. But in the same respect , as you want us to lower our costs, thus you increase your profit margin. This isn't exactly an Issue and both parties may be able to come to a resonable agreement, but where does one persons need to increase profit begin to seriously impact on another persons profit margin ? And at the end of the day , you aren't going to pass that saving on to your clients are you , its going to go into your pocket... So a guilt trip doesn't really work in this case. If you said lower your organics by 25% and I will reduce the cost of my goods by 10% , then maybe that would hold some water...

to be honest be's dont need you we can harvest our own stuff it will just take a day or so for me to harv that much meat

And rangers dont need you ! I sell my organics to Docs and Armoursmiths, they pay a hell of alot better than BE's and making a comment like that while you are saying you still want to develop a relationship with a ranger or group of hunters.. Wont help you that much. And 20k of meat as I said before, could take you more than 'just a day or so' depending on what and where you are hunting.. You can't generalise unless you know the industry 20k of dath carnivore does not compare to 20k of talus avian, the avian would be easier for you to collect as you probably wont get torn a new a-hole but instead of a 200u drop on a lair yielding perhaps a total of 10 creatures X 10 lairs = 20k stack you get a 7-20u drop per kill and the spawns arent frequent enough to stay in one area, also there are no avian missions to my knowledge... And THAT is why the prices vary so much.. And I am talking about OQ/PE/F in the high 900's im not talking 800- or grind here..

but ill make an extra 600k but i would rather help the game economics by contracting out my post is still up and some arse named volcom or whatever is still bumping it with insults . and even after all this i still want to hire a ranger just not that one .as far as the farms go i dont think its a good idea as much as id love to have all the meat id hate to c a class get screwed like that i think if they tripled youre harvest rate and gave you guys somyhing to intice new masters everyone would be happy .

If you were on Scylla I would have offered you a deal , but you aint so I cant (or i dont think you are?). Like i said I don't flame so don't get angry if anything I said offends (it shouldnt). Economics probably vary server to server to the concept of a "Fair price" may vary, but trust me when I say I went ranger so I could harvest more organics and provide the good stuff at a good price... BE/A/D/M/CM alike , if you want it , and I can hunt it ... Then tell me a price. If its reasonable then I will take it, and i think every other ranger would too, but time is money as we all know and my time is not worth below 10cpu and I have never sold for more than 50cpu..

PS: If any master rangers , rangers or scouts on scylla want to go hunting send me a tell/mail or post here so I know. I'm looking for some hunt buddies who will stay hunt buddies myself.
