Thread: Another Master Ranger packs it in.

I've had similar thoughts for a while as well but am definitely going to check out the new patch today. Odds are I won't keep Master anyway, but I've thought a lot about dropping the entire tree and most scout skills as well (though not before I make many crates of camo kits).

I've always enjoyed playing rangers and one reason I am playing one in SWG is the ability to move quickly. Of course that eneded for me mostly in the scout tree. The fact that the devs have yet to respond to our concerns that mounts will make this skill obsolete made me realize that the whole profession, for me, is expendable.

I really was never intent to play resource gatherer, though ironically it is the one thing Rangers do well and what I spend most of my time doing. Hunting and tracking really go hand and hand - the fact that it's in the same tree is quite handy since none of the other trees are very useful. As a TK myself,my entire job at a Krayt hunt is ": points 236m NW" "/pause 600" and then "/harvest meat;"

Anyway, good luck with marksman. I won't use a gun except to knock on lairs, but I do intend to get some armor. Some day.

The problem is that I was having plenty of fun, and almost none of it was coming out the ranger trees.

Then why can't you just say you gave ranger a shot and once you got to the top realized it wasn't for you? Why must it be that the profession is broken because you didn't enjoy it as much as you thought you would? I'm not passing judgment on you for leaving because ranger isn't for everyone any more than creature handler or droid engineer or TKA is for everyone. You made a choice to improve your gaming experience, and I applaud you for that.

Do a lot of crawling, do ya? How many times a night do you use Rescue? 25? People just begging you for camo kits?

Actually, I use crawl a whole lot because I'm a rifleman. And I do use rescue to sacrifice myself for the team if a key member is going down. I don't use it often, but a skill doesn't have to be put to use everyday to be helpful (I'm glad the Air Force trained me in how to get out of a sinking airplane, even though that never happened). And no, camo kits haven't been all that great but perhaps today's patch makes them more viable. And you forgot to mention the defensive mods, the harvesting mod, the trapping mod, as well as the camo mod you get with master ranger which makes me as Bothan darn near invisible to most critters.

These are all useful skills in my character's line of work ... harvesting resources for sale. But they are all means to an end for me, and that end is engaging in some challenging gameplay with people I enjoy. I don't get that from any skill box.

Sorry to see you go bro. I've been tempted to change my skill layout sometimes as well and I can truly sympathize with you since we share the same skills even beyond Ranger. But I do have to say its a matter of personal taste and playstyle, as you say, you mileage may vary.I'm stilll having tons of fun, I'm getting rich quick on the meat market and I still get a warm feeling inside when strangers (8 out of 10 are pistolleers with pets) come up to me in the wilderness and marvel at how I can track down my prey, pull it with a trap, slice, dice and tankwith my sword (no pets), harvest almost 100 meat resources and then stroll off through the middle of an agro camp.

In a world of Pistols and Pets, it's nice to be different.

Actually, it's my pursuit of Swordsman that eventually led me away from Ranger. It was my intention from the start to be a Ranger / Rifleman. Then I realized that I'd want a complementary melee skill for when the mobs got in tight, so I started up Swordsman and enjoyed it immensely.

But on my way up Ranger, I ran out of skillpoints. Figuring that 2-Handed was all I needed, I dumped my Rifleman and achieved Master Ranger. Then, after awhile, I joined a PA that I was hunting with quite a bit only to learn that melee skills don't work very well in PvP.

So I had to take a hard look at the benefits of Ranger that I actually use day-in day-out and weigh them against the usefulness of a ranged skill for both PvE and PvP. Ranged skills won.

That was my thinking from the start, I wasn't gonna do what everyone else was doing. While I still can't bear the thought of having pets do the fighting for me (where's the skill in that?), now that I've decided to pick up a ranged skill, I'd be silly not to pursue the one that is the most effective, Pistols.

But yeah, I do feel like I'm copping out by choosing Pistol, just a bit.

Wow, that's exactly how I started as well. I thought Swordsman would augment my rifle ability but it actually was a more fun profession for me so I gave up Novice Rifleman and all my Marksman skills (not all at once, just as I needed Swordsman points).

And perhaps that's where our widely differing satisfaction levels may be rooted. I don't PvP nor do I have any interest in it, therefore if Rangers are weak in PvPI couldn't care less as far as it concerned my own character (I would care for those Rangers who did want to PvP).I don't see my points spentin rarely usedRanger skills as wasted because while I don't use them a whole lot, I do use them occasionally and I don't have a pressing need to use them in areas that would strengthen me in PvP.

You answered your own question. I shouldn't have to be a rifleman (or whatever) to find a use for my ranger skills.

You are supposed to get faster crawling speed with rifles on the rifleman concealment skill tree.

I am also extremely close to dropping my Ranger skills. I am (4 4 4 0) andI could have easily been a Master Ranger in no time if i wanted it, but Ranger traps are worthless. The camps are crap, camo kits are crap, and tracking is only useful on spawn points for things such as Krayts. This is a profession only for those who like being able to do nothing useful. I know many are sticking it out like me praying for somethin good to happen, as in the blinds or lures, but I am sick and tired of bein useless. I guess I have made my decision... I'm dropping Ranger. Also advice to those picking up Pistoleer, the only usefull skill is fanshot, and everythin else sux. Fanshot is even random HAM dmg, making it even worse. You are better off takin up a melee profession if you want to do dmg or PvP, as pistoleer doesn't win in PvP or PvE without using other skill trees (CH, Ranged Support).

if Rangers are weak in PvP...

Rangers are non-existent in PvP. And Melee Rangers, like us, are like anti-matter, we're less than nothing.

I've kept my tracking skills, I'm going to try to put them to use locating the opposing leaders in PvP combat. We'll see.

"sigh" I'm REALLY thinking about losing Master Ranger, and dropping a bunch of the Ranger skills. I don't think I can be patient for very much longer, i'ts just getting too frustrating. Same with CH, only CH is actually getting WORSE, at least with Ranger they are just being slow about bringing in improvments.

But I'm not willing to bet three more months on it.

I made that statement 10/07. Two months have passed and Ranger hasn't improved an iota. I'm glad I had the sense to bail when I did. You guys deserve medals for your legendary patience.

I'm guessing it will be February before you have something meaningful (balanced, debugged and working) to talk about, let alone cheer.

"Nice to hear from you again Jmatt."

Aye... A lot of old names coming out of the woodwork.
